Mr. Jerry Lee Babb, age 84, of Hartwell, GA passed away Monday, January 14, 2019.
Jerry was born on June 16, 1934 to the late Lloyd and Nora Babb. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Faye Gooch Babb, brothers Charles Babb and David Babb, and sister Mary Warren. Jerry was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hartwell, GA. He loved going fishing and was a loving husband, father and “Grandpa”.
Survivors include his daughters and sons in law Candice and Thomas Atkinson, Royston; and Charis and Ronnie Ard, Royston; grandchildren Melinda Atkinson, Hannah Maddox (Robert), Kelsi Ard and Nicolas Ard (Kristi); great grandchildren Aria Maddox, Everly Maddox, Alex Ard and Nathaniel Ard; brother Robert Babb, Greensboro, NC.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Betty Jo (Bryant) Satterfield, age 79, of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019.She was of Seventh Day Adventist faith. Funeral service will be 2pm Sunday, January 6, 2019 in the Chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. Dr. Roger Mace and Rev. David Ryder officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Dahlonega. Mrs. Satterfield was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Mellie (Chastain) Bryant ; brothers Homer Bryant and Arthur Bryant. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Wendell Satterfield; children Melanie (George) Graves; Kay Farmer; Wendy (Tim) Smith; twin sister Billie Jean “Jackie” Gayken; grandchildren Grant (Riley) Graves; Brittany (Billy) Saunders; Trey Farmer; Caitlyn (Corey) Knight; Hunter Smith; and five great granddaughters. Mrs. Denise Renee Head, age 53, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
Renee was born in Hall County on July 26, 1965. She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Reid and Virginia Greenway and paternal grandparents Elmer and Lucy Head. Renee was a loving mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Nanny”. Renee loved to fish and sing. She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son Brandon Duff (Savanna Ballard), Villa Rica; daughter Whitney Duff (April), Dahlonega; grandchildren Aubrey Duff, Ansley Rogers, Sarah Duff, and Brooke Duff; mother and step-father Janice and Billy Williams, Dahlonega; father and step-mother Dude and Pat Head, Dahlonega; boyfriend and his son Waymon Earls and Blake Earls, Martin.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Kris Butler will officiate. Interment will follow in Jones Chapel-Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

Mary Willene Gipson: Obituary

When Mary Willene (Poss) Gipson recorded “After You”, she had no way of knowing that she would be the first to leave the loving union of marriage she shared with her husband of nearly 39 years. Their’s was truly a romance that lasted her lifetime. The song was recorded along with the single release “Plug My Heart Into the Jukebox” that climbed the Independent Charts to #1 and reached #4 on the Top 20 Independent Country Artist Radio Airplane Chart.
Mrs. Gipson, age 57, lost her battle with melanoma cancer on Wednesday, December 05, 2018 with her loving husband holding her hand and her family by her side.
She was born in Atlanta, GA on July 20, 1961 to the late James Poss and survived by her mother, Janice Farmer Poss Hulsey, who gave her great inspiration reminding her that she came from a long line of strong and courageous women. She is a member of Hope Road Church of God. She was a graduate of Lumpkin County High School Class of 1979. She attended Truett McConnell College, later transferring to North Georgia College. She completed two courses with the Children’s Institute of Children’s Literature, subsequently publishing her children’s book titled “The Tattered Feather”. Mrs. Gipson owned and operated Beacon Careers Limited for 20 years.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother Nathaniel Poss and sister Judy Poss.
She is survived by her loving husband Voughn Gipson of Dahlonega; sons Hasley Gipson of Dahlonega, and Master Sergeant Wesley (Kristen) Gipson of Ewa Beach, HI; her grandchildren Caroline and Mary Gipson of Dahlonega, and Parker Gipson of Ewa Beach, HI; her brothers Marcus Hulsey of Dahlonega, and Jim Poss of Cleveland, TN; sister Paula Modisette of Murrayville; sister-in-law Venita Thomas of Norcross; and very special friend Carol Housley of Dahlonega.
Mrs. Gipson’s life will be celebrated at 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. Mr. Bryan Shirley will officiate. Member of the Blue Mountain Chapter #333, OES will deliver final rites. Interment will follow in Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery with a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” performed on the bagpipe by Sam the Piper.

John Benjamin Abercrombie: Obituary

Mr. John Benjamin Abercrombie, age 88, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, November 19, 2018.
Mr. Abercrombie was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on July 12, 1930 to the late Charles G. and Florence Bragg Abercrombie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Martha Free Abercrombie; son Johnny Abercrombie; daughter Pamela Abercrombie; brothers Bill Abercrombie, Walter Abercrombie, C.G. Abercrombie, Jr., and Elmer Abercrombie; sisters Lou Nell McDonald, Gurlie Mae Paul, and Margaret Rogers; and son in law Anthony Waters. Mr. Abercrombie served his country honorably in the United States Army. He owned and operated Abercrombie Grocery Store and he drove a school bus for Lumpkin County schools for 14 years and 2 months. Mr. Abercrombie loved to fish and was affectionately called “Papa Ben” by his grandchildren. He was proud to have been the longest living member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church that spanned for more than 74 years.
Survivors include his daughters Reba Duff (Clayton), and Susie Waters (Daniel Thomas) both of Dahlonega; grandchildren Benji Smith, Kevin Waters, Colby Duff, Steven Duff, and Sam Duff; 16 great grandchildren including Harley Smith; four great great grandchildren; brothers Tommy Abercrombie (Darlene), Dahlonega, and Garry Abercrombie (Regina), Texas; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 21, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Les Fuller will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors.

Ms. Goldia Loretta Reece, age 86, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018.
Goldia was a native and life long resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on January 21, 1932 to the late Clarence Albert and Gertrude Essie Anderson Reece. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother in law J.T. Staton. Goldia retired from the Lumpkin County school system as a worker in the lunch room. She cared for each child she served and made sure they had plenty to eat. Although Goldia had no children, she loved her nephews and nieces as her own. She loved to spend time in the garden and grow food for her family and friends. Goldia was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sister Sylvia Staton, Dahlonega; nephews and nieces Randy and Nancy Staton, Murrayville; Trent and Marty Staton, Dahlonega; Keith and Tanya Staton, Orlando, FL; great nephew K.C. Staton and great niece Kate Staton.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The Rev. Les Fuller and the Rev. Stephen Gerrells will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church #2 Cemetery with the Rev. Franklin Grant officiating.

Jan Burt, age 58, of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018. Jan was a native of Dahlonega, member of Friendship Baptist Church, loved traveling, gardening, a devoted friend, great love and passion for directing the educational growth of new students at UNG. She was the Drill Sergeant, Navigator, and Boss of her sisters. Ms. Burt is preceded in death by her mother Lillie C. (Jarrard) Burt. Jan is survived by her father JB Burt, sisters Lynn (Larry) Armstrong; Brenda Knapp; Jeannine Burt; and aunt Virginia Jarrard. Nieces and nephews; Trent Armstrong, Troy Armstrong, Shelly Riddle, Stefanie Yoon, Sebastian Knapp, Jesse Rockmore, and Jordan Rockmore; numerous other relatives also. Also surviving are lifelong devoted friends Deb McLeod, Laura Allen, Dr. Carmen Mas and many other lifelong friends. Mr. Scotty Ray Miles, age 52, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, December 5, 2019.
Scotty was born in Hall County on August 28, 1967. He was preceded in death by his wife Vivian Miles, step-son James Murphy, and his father Stephen Miles, Sr. Scotty attended Lumpkin County High School and was of the Baptist faith. He worked at B and M Metals and had volunteered for many years as a firefighter for Lumpkin County, Station 2. Scotty lived a quiet and peaceful life.
Survivors include his mother Vergie Miles, Dahlonega; brothers and sisters-in-law Chad and Loretta Miles, Dahlonega, and Steve and Mandi Miles, North Carolina; step-son Jeffery Miles, California; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Memorial services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Ricky Stone and Mr. Joe Lanier will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to the hour of the service Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Larry James Robinson, age 65, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019.
Larry was born in White County on October 23, 1953 to the late J.C. and Zora Hester Robinson. He was retired after many years of dedicated service to Windstream. Larry enjoyed life to the fullest. He would often say “Find something you love to do and do it”. Larry was loving life and riding his motorcycle with his son, who is his best friend, on Sunday when the Lord called Larry home. He was enjoying retired life and all that comes with it from riding his motorcycle to fishing. Larry deeply adored and was greatly loved by his great-nephews and niece.
Survivors include his wife Jan Robinson, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law Josh and Ashley Robinson, Dahlonega; brother Bobby Robinson, Dahlonega; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jerry and Penny Lunsford, Dahlonega; father-in-law Waldo Lunsford, Dahlonega; nephews Robby Robinson (Christina), Cleveland, and Clint and Lyndsey Freeland, Dahlonega; niece Laura Lunsford, Dahlonega; special great-nephews Jack Freeland and Rhett Freeland; and special great-niece Evy Freeland.

Dusty Kaylor Popko, age 43 of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away peacefully Friday, August 16, 2019. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Harvest Baptist Church from 2 to 4PM with a service following at 4PM. Rev. Mark Biddy will officiate. Interment will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Dusty is survived by her husband Ben Popko; sons Logan Popko, Bricen Popko, Micah Popko, all of Dahlonega, Georgia; mother Kathy Burger Kaylor, of Blue Ridge, Georgia; father and his wife Rusty and Victoria Kaylor, of Dahlonega, Georgia; sister and brother-in-law Kimberley and John David Hyde, of Blue Ridge, Georgia: She is survived by Nieces who were like daughters Kelley Kaylor and Emily (Heath) Giddy, and Nephew Caleb Hyde. Dusty was known for her amazing love for God. She fought a long battle and praised God until her final breath. She brought laughter whenever she entered the room, and was known for her random singing, her amazing artistic abilities, and love of traveling. Dusty loved her family and had many friends. She loved spending time at Hobby Lobby exploring her next craft project. She, along with her friend Karen, loved face painting at local craft shows and festivals. A great passion of hers was her church family, mentoring the youth, and the performances of the annual Easter and Christmas Plays. Her family and her loved to prepare Gourmet Meals at Home. Award-winning pub gears up for annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser

Shenanigans Irish Pub, located right off the historic Dahlonega square, is getting ready for their annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser with some beneficial renovations.

The owner, Deb Rowe, told FYN that the most significant changes made to the pub were enclosing the patio, protecting their outside courtyard from water drainage from the street, and adding new ramps, making the entire patio and courtyard wheelchair accessible. Rowe explained how the community will benefit from the new improvements, “Now, everyone can get from the courtyard, to the deck and to the patio; the courtyard is all accessible.”

The renovations have taken place just weeks before their upcoming 11th annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser event, which Rowe started as a way to raise money for research on Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cystic Fibrosis. The weekend-long event includes a silent auction and fresh Florida oysters that are shucked on-site. Rowe revealed that this year they are extending the event space into their parking lot, giving them an additional 40×40 square feet of room.
Rowe also explained that during the first year of the fundraiser, they raised $6400, which has grown to $40,000 ten years later, “Originally, the first few years we were raising $6,000 to $8,000, and it was just for Muscular Dystrophy. Then my sister was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and even though Cystic Fibrosis is relatively rare, I know several people who have it.” In 2018, Shenanigans earned the Community Involvement Award from the Georgia chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for their contributions resulting from Shucking for Shamrocks.

The event will be from August 31 until September 2, and community members are encouraged to sign up to volunteer for the event, “Above and beyond making donations to the silent auction and spending money at the event, we have an inter-active volunteer sign-up link [on their Facebook page]. We really just need additional bodies to help.”

Lumpkin County Tax Commissioner, Rachel Pruitt, has announced that she will retire from her position as Tax Commissioner once the 2019 term has ended.
After working in the Tax Commissioner’s office for 30 years, and serving as the Lumpkin County Tax Commissioner since 2009, Pruitt told Fetch Your News that it was “time to turn the reins over;” she also expressed her gratitude towards Lumpkin County for electing her to serve as their tax commissioner for the past decade in an interview with FYN, ” I have really enjoyed serving Lumpkin County as their Tax Commissioner and I hope I have made them proud and are leaving them with a good legacy. Helping taxpayers with payment plans to pay their property taxes or helping them with their complex registrations issues makes me feel that I have served them well, with a true Servants Heart.”
Pruitt said her most important accomplishment since being elected tax commissioner was succeeding in increasing the tax collection rate up, “We succeeded and we have kept the yearly collection rate in all future years at a 99 % rate or better.”

He currently works in the tax commissioner’s office and he has Pruitt’s full support, ”I have been training him in all aspects of the office, and there is a lot to learn. He has my full support [running for tax commissioner] and I wish him well.”

Patricia Ann Cox: Obituary

Mrs. Patricia Ann Cox, age 87, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019.
Mrs. Cox was born in London, England on November 20, 1931 to the late Kenneth and Eileen Beatrice Bowles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son Jeffery W. Cox who passed away in 2010. Mrs. Cox loved living in Dahlonega, especially her home surrounded by all the beautiful trees. She moved to Canada because of the housing shortage in London after the blitz and lived there for six years until she moved to the United States in 1963. Mrs. Cox became a US citizen in 1973. She worked as a draft person in London and she was an accomplished artist and poet.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years Maurice W. Cox, Dahlonega and her three beloved dogs. Mrs. Cox was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
