UNG blanks Georgia Southwestern in Peach Belt Conference opener

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team defeated Georgia Southwestern 3-0 in the Nighthawk’s Peach Belt Conference opener.
Abbie Crane kicked off the scoring for UNG in the 18th minute with her team-leading third goal of the season. The first half stayed at 1-0 for most of the half despite the Nighthawks having multiple chances.
Late in the first half, Alex Clark found an opportunity from an assist by Katey Derkay and put the Nighthawks up by two goals just 30 seconds before the two sides head into halftime.
The final nail in the coffin came from Skylar Abbott, who put pressure on a Hurricane defense that had had to withstand a strong UNG attack for most of the match. Abbott used an assist by Katey Derkay, her second of the game, to put the game officially out of reach in the 88th minute.
UNG moves to 1-0 in PBC play this year and 3-1-1 overall after facing a tough non-conference schedule.

Nighthawks defeat Georgia College 1-0 in women’s soccer

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — After nearly 103 minutes, the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team stretched the winning streak to six with a 1-0 win over Georgia College Saturday evening.
North Georgia played most of the first half out of the Bobcat half but had nothing to show for it as all four shots taken by UNG failed to find the back of the net. Both teams had numerous opportunities in the second half but with no score after 90 minutes, the game went to extra time.
The Nighthawks continued to press forward in the final portion of the match as Cat Watry’s cross was blocked. Nikki Gomez took the ball and fired a shot that was saved, but Abbie Crane picked the rebound and put it home through contact to give UNG the win.
NOTES
– This was the 10th time a match between UNG and GC was decided by a single goal. North Georgia is 2-0-3 in games that have advanced into the second overtime period.
– Morgan Ramby finished the night with four saves.
– Prior to the game, Ramby, Jazmin Adlam, Taylor Malasek and Bailey Swindell were honored as part of Senior Day.

UNG defeats Young Harris, 1-0 in Women’s Soccer

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team took down Young Harris Saturday night, 1-0, earning the upper hand toward a Battle of Blood Mountain point for the Nighthawks.
It took just 81 seconds for North Georgia to find the only goal of the night as Taylor Malasek had her shot saved, but the rebound came back to Abbie Crane who put the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
From there, both defenses prevailed, allowing just four shots each on goal throughout the 90 minutes.
NOTES
– Morgan Ramby earned her second straight clean sheet, making four saves on the night.
– Dating back to last season, Crane has scored in four of her last six matches.

The Nighthawks will return home for a non-conference tilt against Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
Nighthawks women’s soccer team earns draw with Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team scored three straight goals in the first half and then held on to earn a 3-3 draw at Carson-Newman Thursday afternoon.
After an opening goal by the Eagles in the 11th minute, Abbie Crane answered with her first goal in the 23rd minute on a breakaway to knot the game up at 1-1. Seven minutes later, Taylor Malasek fired a rocket past the C-N keeper from 35 yards out to give UNG its first lead of the night. North Georgia extended the lead to 3-1 on Crane’s second goal in the 40th minute.
Carson-Newman responded in a big way in the second half, coming out and scoring just three minutes into the second half and again in the 65th minute to tie the match. From there, the Nighthawks saw the game out to finish with a draw.
NOTES
– Crane earned her second career brace. Her first two-goal outing came back in February against Francis Marion.
– Carson-Newman took 13 shots in the second half to UNG’s four. Both teams had seven shots on goal.
– The draw is the first in a season opener since 2009 when UNG tied Tampa, 2-2. It is also the first time in program history that UNG has scored three goals in a draw.
