Mr. J.W. “Cotton” Harkins, age 91, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2019.
Mr. Harkins was born in Suches, GA on August 6, 1927 to the late Ben and Alice Stover Harkins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Bertha Harkins, son Tony Harkins, and daughter Beverly Harkins. Mr. Harkins was a member of Harmony Church of God. He was retired from the University of North Georgia. Mr. Harkins loved to fish, garden, and coon hunt.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law Teresa and Roger Cantrell, and Gale and Larry Smith, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Cody and Aliciah Wymer, Brooke and Matthew Gillespie, James and Daina Askea, all of Dahlonega, Mark and Elisha Santiago, Arizona, Jennifer Hogan, Colorado Springs, CO, Melissa and Joey Evans, Gainesville, and Chastity Cantrell, Dahlonega; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Dalton Delozier and the Rev. Chad Stewart will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches, GA. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Janice Prater Foster, age 77, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, June 14, 2019.
Mrs. Foster was born in Hall County on December 29, 1941 to the late Lonnie and Beuny Whitmire Prater. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Melba Rea and brother Jerry Prater. Mrs. Foster was a member of Cavender Creek Baptist Church. She worked for many years at Butler’s Five and Dime Store. Mrs. Foster also worked at Torrington (KOYO) and then later she retired from Walmart. Her grandchildren called her “Nana”. Mrs. Foster loved to sing in her church choir and she was a member of “Cabin Fever”, a Bluegrass Band which she started.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Jimmy and Brenda Fortner, Dahlonega, and Johnny and Tammy Fortner, Cleveland; grandchildren Kelsey and Dan Davis, Kelly and T.J. Alexander, and Tyler Fortner; great-grandchildren Natalie Harris, Abigail Davis, and Ella Alexander; brothers and sisters-in-law Benny and Carol Prater, and Gary and Gloria Prater; brothers Danny Prater, and Stanley Prater; sister Doris Prater Busbee; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Monday, June 17, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Cavender Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Bonnell Abee Robinson, age 80, of Cleveland passed away Thursday, June 6, 2019.
Mrs. Robinson was born in Lumpkin County on May 15, 1939 to the late Fred Morris and Emma Barrett Abee. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ben Robinson, son Gary Cornwell, son-in-law Danny Ellis, siblings Roy Abee, Charles Abee, Iola Daniel, Dorris Abee, Morris Abee, Fred Abee, Jr., Christine White, Bobbie Miller, Christopher Abee, and George Abee.
Bonnell retired from NOK. She loved to garden, read, and watch television. Bonnell was a loving mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Nana”. Bonnell loved attending church at Chattahoochee Baptist Church where she was a member.
Survivors include her daughters Melinda Ellis, Cleveland, Susan Robinson Frazier, Buford, and Judy Robinson Guyette, Gainesville; daughter-in-law Sheila Cornwell; grandchildren Rosie and Chris Shelnut, Joseph Ellis and Melissa Williams, Shon and Caitlyn Cornwell, Jeremy and Wendy Frazier, Jennifer and Clint Webb and Jeff Frazier; twelve great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law Herbert and Sandra Abee, Dahlonega, and James and Rhonda Abee, Florida; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Friday, June 14, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Chris Anderson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.

UNG baseball players named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG baseball players, Chase Sudduth and Parker Morrison, were each selected for the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team.

Sudduth, a senior from Powder Springs, GA, his .379 on the year, with 17 doubles, two triples and eight homers with 40 RBI. He was also named to the All-Peach Belt Conference First Team and D2CCA All-Region Second Team earlier this month. Sudduth, at one point this season, had a 15 game hitting streak and ended the season on a 43 game reached base streak, both longest on the UNG team. He also had 23 multi-hit games, including the only five-hit game on the team this season.
Morrison, a redshirt sophomore from Cumming, GA, went 5-4 with nine saves in 2019, fanning 81 opposing batters while walking just 22. His ERA was a 3.52, third best on the team. He was also selected for Second Team All-Conference earlier this month.

Nighthawks women’s tennis team ends with loss against Lynn

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the No. 12 UNG women’s tennis team’s season comes to a close as the Nighthawks fell to No. 1 Lynn, 4-0, Thursday morning in the national quarterfinals. Lynn seeded third in the tournament and will advance to tomorrow’s semifinal round.
The Nighthawks fell in the doubles point but showed fight, falling at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, despite starting the match down 3-0. No. 2 doubles did not finish, but the match was 5-4 with Lynn serving when the point was clinched.
North Georgia continued to battle in singles play, but in the end, the nation’s top team was too much as the Knights took the final three points of the match at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 to continue on.
The Nighthawks finished the season at 22-6, marking the most wins in a single season in program history. UNG also made the national quarterfinals for the first time in program history this year as well, advancing a round further than last year’s trip to the final site.

Mrs. Anna Lou Truelove, age 83, of Clermont passed away Monday, May 13, 2019.
Mrs. Truelove was born in White County on September 19, 1935 to the late John William and Alice Eliza Crow Fortner. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son David Truelove, siblings Henley Fortner, Fannie Lance, Billy Fortner, Grover Fortner, Clyde Fortner, Claud Fortner, Raleigh Fortner, Ben Fortner, and Charlie Fortner. Mrs. Truelove was a member of Cavender Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband Jimmy Truelove, Clermont; daughter-in-law Joy Truelove, Archer, FL; grandchildren Crystal and Chris Jansen, Williston, FL, and Davina Truelove, Orlando, FL; brother and sister-in-law Jack and Joyce Fortner, Dahlonega; sister-in-law Joan Gilbert, Clermont;sister-in-law Liza Fortner; niece Lois Smith, Murrayville; great-grandchildren Colby Jansen and Colton Jansen.

CYNTHIA KAY (FERRIS) SCHUMANN, age 72, passed away peacefully at her home in Dahlonega, Georgia on the evening of Tuesday, May 7, 2019 with her husband Robert by her side.
Cindi was born in Hamilton, Ohio on May 4, 1947 to Kennith and Dorothy Ferris. She lived on their farm in Camden, Ohio for several years. She attended the local Camden Public School where most of her family had previously gone. Soon after starting school, her family decided to move to Miami, Florida.
Cindi grew up in the Miami Gardens area, north of Miami and went to the local public schools there. She graduated from Norland High School in 1965. She started her business life with Southern Bell in Miami. She held many positions, craft and management, throughout the company in south Florida. She transferred to Atlanta, Georgia in 1980. After working at several locations around Atlanta, she was promoted and sent to the company’s Atlanta headquarters where she was assigned to manage several projects. She married Robert Schumann on June 20, 1995. In 2002, after 35 years with the company, Cindi finally retired to the home that she and Robert built in the North Georgia Mountains.
Cindi was a proud, self-made, woman, but was diagnosed with breast cancer in October of 2014. She fought her cancer with everything she had. She knew from the beginning that it was going to be an uphill battle, but she never lost faith. She knew that she could defeat it in the end. She had a tremendous support team, with her husband and high school friends always there. She was so strong, even her doctors could not imagine the strength she had to defy this evil. Cindi had friends everywhere. She always made sure she shared her good fortune with her friends and the people she loved. She would send flowers to her friends just to make them happy. She would send popcorn treats to her dentist’s office or the veterinary clinic just to see them smile. Flowers, she loved to surprise her friends with a beautiful bunch of flowers, or even a plant. She also loved to receive flowers. When she went to chemotherapy, she would always make sure she brought enough “snacks” so that everyone there could have something to munch on. Everyone was her friend and she saw no evil in anyone.
She will be laid to rest in a columbarium next to her stepdaughter at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 12:00 PM.
Cindi is preceded in death by her father Kennith Ferris, her mother Dorothy Ferris, and her stepdaughter Kathleen V. Schumann. She is survived by her husband Robert; stepson Robert Mark Schumann; brother Fredric Ferris; sister-in-law Heather Ferris; cousins Marilyn and Jae Eson, and her many friends.

Virginia was born in Dahlonega on February 28, 1966 to the late Edwin and Theresa Cantrell Robertson. She was a member of The Fountain Church of God of Prophecy in Dahlonega.
Survivors include her husband of 15 years, Jeremy Seabolt, Dahlonega; daughter and son-in-law Tesha Robertson and Chris Lee, Dahlonega; grandchildren Lain Lee and Grayson Lee; sisters Michelle Cantrell, Dahlonega and Denise Robertson, Athens; sisters-in-law Misty Caldwell and Jordan Shoffeitt, Dahlonega.

UNG women’s tennis team defeats Queens in championship opening

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the No. 12 UNG women’s tennis team won three straight singles matches in straight sets over No. 49 Queens, 4-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tennis Championship. The win marks the first win at the national championship site in program history.
UNG started quickly in doubles, winning 6-1 at No. 2 and No. 3. The first win was earned by Emma Etelalahti and Cibeles Zuddy, followed by Adrienne Bofinger and Lexa Loden.
In singles, Bofinger earned the first point, winning in dominant fashion, 6-1, 6-1. Zuddy wasn’t far behind, winning at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2 before the singles matches were closer. Jorge went down a set early but fought back to force a third, while Claudelle Labonte Frey won her first set in a tiebreak. Bennett clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win just before Loden was able to finish her match.

LC BOE announces called meeting to allow public to express concerns

The Lumpkin County Board of Education announced a called meeting for Monday, March 25 at 6:30PM.
Lumpkin County School System announced on social media on Friday, March 22 that the purpose of the meeting is to allow Lumpkin residents to express their concerns regarding the recent resignation of Lumpkin County High School principal, Billy Kirk, “Individuals wishing to address the board can get a ‘Public Comment Sign-In’ form from the LCSS after 8AM on Monday, [March 25].” They further explain that “Completed forms should be given to the board secretary prior to the start of the meeting. Each speaker will be allotted three minutes.
When asked what made the LC BOE decide to hold a called meeting, LCSS Superintendent, Dr. Rob Brown, told FYN, “The board wants to give the community an opportunity to share their input on our current issues.”

Nancy Green, age 91, of Murrayville, Georgia, formerly of Lawrenceville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019. She was a Registered Surgical nurse and a business women. Nancy was an amazing women, wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished life with curiosity, determination, and joy. She raised us all to believe in ourselves, to live life to the fullest, to love, to treat others well, and to live a health driven lifestyle. Martha Sue (Sanford) Rider age 70 of Dahlonega passed away on February 17, 2019 following an extended illness. Mrs. Rider was a member of Philippi Baptist Church in Dahlonega.
Mrs. Rider is preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Imogene (Baker) Sanford.
Mrs. Rider is survived by her husband of 55 years Charles Rider, son Travis and Lane Rider of Dahlonega, siblings Pat and Clarence Grindle of Dahlonega, Elizabeth Hudson of Dahlonega, Mildred and Lyndal Caldwell of Dahlonega, Bea and Danny Phillips of Dahlonega, Tracy and Sherry Sanford of Dahlonega, grandchildren TJ Rider and Trevor Rider.
Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday February 20, 2019 at 2pm in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. Rev. Josh Chatham and Rev. Terry Head to officiate.

Mrs. Ann Martin, age 79, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019.
Mrs. Martin was born in Habersham County on June 14, 1939 to the late Claude and Olive Dyer Gragg. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Doyle Martin. Mrs. Martin was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Dawsonville. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who was affectionately called “Nana”. Mrs. Martin loved to garden and go “yard selling” with her sister and brother-in-law. She loved to cook for her family, who will always remember her very best sweet tea.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law Kristie and Chad Grizzle; Tammy and Justin Priest, both of Dahlonega; sister and brother-in-law Sue and Frank Ellis, Canton; brother and sister-in-law Larry and Pat Gragg, Douglasville; grandchildren Mechelle Hutcheson and Zack Rumsey, Ashley and Michael Bailey, Brooke Price, Ethan Priest, Lexie Grizzle, and Calla Grizzle; great-grandchildren Daniel Shane Bailey and Harmonie Faith Rumsey.
