Battle of the States: 1st Round Recap

The 24th Annual Battle of the States Christmas Tournament kicked off in Hiawassee, Georgia on Wednesday, Dec 27. The tournament consists of eight boys and eight girls teams, who represent GA, NC, TN, and AL. There will be eight games a day for all three days of the tournament.
Here are the the first day results from the girls’ side of the bracket:
In the 10am game, Murphy NC beat Lumpkin County Girls by a score of 76-55. Post, Jessica Beckner led the Lady Bulldogs with 24 pts. Lumpkin was led in scoring by Makenzie Pulley, who had 19 pts.
In the 1pm game, Hokes Bluff, Alabama defeated Polk County, TN by a score of 32 – 23. Amanda Noah led Hokes Bluff with 21 pts. Nikki Ball led Polk County with 11 pts.
In the 4pm game, Union County defeated Darlington Academy in a close fought contest. Union pulled out a 54-52 victory as Darlington missed a game-tying field goal as time expired. Adeline Mockery paced the Lady Panthers with 22 pts. Caroline Dingler led Darlington with 21 pts.
In the 7pm tilt, the Towns County Lady Indians defeated rival, Hayesville, NC by a score of 52-42. Towns County kept the lead the whole first half, taking a 22-19 lead into intermission. The two teams were tied at 26 before Towns County’s press stretched the lead to 43-30 at the end of the third. Towns closed the game with a 10pt victory. Freshman, Kennedi Henson led Towns with 16. Junior, Taylor Cornett gave 9 pts, with a trifecta of long distance shots. Senior Madison McClure had 8 pts, hitting four crucial free throws in the game’s final minutes. Hayesville was led in scoring by Junior, Savanna Annis with 18 pts. Hailea Rickett finished with 17 pts.
Day Two of the Battle of States tournament will feature 4 girls and 4 boys games through the whole day of Thursday, December 28th. The tournament will conclude on Friday, December 29th with 8 more games to determine Battle of the States’ Champions, as well as 2nd through 5th place for Boys and Girls.

Cross Country Set to Run in Peach Belt Championship

FORT BENNING, Ga. – After an undefeated regular season, the University of North Georgia cross country team will travel to Fort Benning, Georgia, for a second time this season to compete in the Peach Belt Conference Championship Saturday morning. This will be the Peach Belt Conference’s 27th Cross Country Championships, and Columbus State University will host the event for the first time since 2006 and the third overall. The championship will be contested over a 5k course, the first time the PBC has held a 5k in the championship since 2008. The Nighthawks have won all four races this season, including the Cougar Invitational on the same course last month. Brittany Truitt has the opportunity to become the 11th women’s cross country runner in PBC history to be named a four-time All-Conference honoree. She has the fastest time in the conference this season at 17:55 and has not finished lower than third individually all season. North Georgia will also look to make program history as the first cross country team to bring home a championship after finishing runner-up the past three years. The race will start at 9:00 a.m. Admittance to the race is free, but those wishing to attend need to allow time to pass through security at Fort Benning. Taylor announces plans to run for re-election in 2020

DAHLONEGA, GA
Current Post 5 councilwoman, JoAnne Taylor, has confirmed that she will run for re-election for Dahlonega City Council in 2020. 
Taylor told FYN that her most important accomplishment during her current term was, “Tax reduction of 5.14% for the proposed 2020 budget.” She further explained that the City Council will hold a public hearing on Thursday, August 15, at 4:00 p.m., followed by a City Council meeting on September 3 at 6:00 p.m., “to adopt the budget resolution.” 
According to Taylor, water, sewer, sanitation, and recycling costs for in-city residential customers will not increase, “We will continue a high level of service, make needed infrastructure improvements, and deliver new amenities to our community within the proposed budget.”
Taylor credits the tax reduction to the “teamwork and focus by the Mayor, City Council, and dedicated Staff on reducing costs,” and she also explained that her main focus item was reducing costs, “I have participated in all budget meetings. I also lent my business expertise to the staff in evaluating much-needed new financial application software…The new application, when fully implemented, will increase overall efficiency and improved citizen communication.”
Taylor also expressed to FYN her appreciation for being voted into the City Council, “I have been enormously privileged to be a public servant to Dahlonega. My $400 salary, net taxes, has been donated to local not-for-profits. I am grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to serve.”
If re-elected, Taylor said her main focus would be, “Containing costs and managing growth while preserving the very special place we call home, Dahlonega.” Taylor further explained that she would focus on continuing to add amenities to Dahlonega, such as the Gold Adventures All-Abilities Playground in Hancock Park, the Farmers Market, and the Wimpy Mill picnic area, “We need to balance the significant costs of infrastructure, such as stormwater management, with providing improved amenities…I will continue to welcome feedback from our citizens, a vital form of government. Thanks in advance for your support!”

BOLO released for burglary suspect in Lumpkin County

According to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, there has been a ‘Be On The Look Out’ (BOLO) released for a female suspect, after an attempted break-in.
Deputies responded to a call for a possible break-in the Pecks Mill Creek area on Friday, March 15. While trying to run from the scene, the female suspect swerved her vehicle towards a police officer, who then shot at the tire of the vehicle to prevent escape.
Investigators and police know who the suspect is and are currently are looking for her. The LCSO released a statement on their social media page, “A short time ago, deputies responded to the Pecks Mill Creek area on a possible burglary in
progress. Deputies confirmed while on location that the home is secured and we know who the suspect is.
You may see an increase in patrol units in the area. At this time, we do not believe anyone is in danger but just be aware and if you see anything suspicious, call 911. This is an ongoing investigation.
