Mr. Robert Scott Napier, 59, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center
In Gainesville.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 25, 1959 to parents Dan and Sylvia Smith Napier, Scott had lived in Dahlonega the past six
months having moved here from West Virginia. He had previously lived in White County for two years where he served as
associate pastor at Cleveland Church of God.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Connie Bennett Napier, his children; Carrie Napier
(Justin Ravan), Kayla Dingess (Jordan), and Scotty Napier(Emily Wood), grandchildren; Aubrey Sue Dingess and Olivia Anna
Dingess, all of Dahlonega. Other relatives also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 23, 2018 in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. The
family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the service, also on Sunday.

Mrs. Janett Shreffler, age 83, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018.
Mrs. Shreffler was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on January 10, 1935 to the late Jess and Bessie Moose Thomasson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Ginger Shreffler Lee; granddaughter Erica Berry; son-in-law C.F. Lingerfelt; sisters Jessie Mae Thomasson, Bertha Lingerfelt, Bonnie Wheeler, Rita Campbell, Dorothy Thomasson, and Glenda Shoffeitt; and brothers David Thomasson, and Bobby Lee Thomasson.
Mrs. Shreffler retired from Pinetree/Mohawk Industries after many years of dedicated work. She loved to color and cook. Mrs. Shreffler loved her children and grandchildren who affectionately called her “Granny”. Some of her family’s greatest memories of “Granny” was her love for traveling and long walks on the beach. Mrs. Shreffler was a member of Harmony Church of God in Suches.
Survivors include her sons Ronnie “Pete” Abercrombie, Tim (Loretta) Abercrombie, and Alan “Pie” Shreffler, all of Dahlonega; daughters Sue (Buster) Hicks, Karen Lingerfelt, both of Dahlonega, Terry (Jeff) Forrester, Gainesville, and Elaine (Phil) Leger, Dahlonega; son-in-law Horace Lee; grandsons Scott Abercrombie, David Abercrombie, Randy (April) Hicks, Kevin (Amanda) Lee, Shawn Berry, Aaron Lechelt, and D.J. Forrester; granddaughters Lisa Hicks Alphin, Renee (Joe) Dodd, Suzanne (Jamie) Hitt, Misty (Joe) Kelley, Kandic (Janna) Lee, Bridgette (Chris) Millwood, and Hailey (James) Palmer; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister Faye Self, Dahlonega; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday, December 13, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Masters officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Alice Jean Anderson Butler, age 87, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018. She was born in Lumpkin County on September 4, 1931.
Alice worked as a food inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she retired in January of 1991. She was of the Christian faith and was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Dahlonega, GA. Alice spent many years of her life traveling the country with her husband of almost thirty years, D.L. Butler. She was friends with all and never met a stranger. She loved crafts and loved to bake. She made everyone that entered her home feel welcomed.
Alice was preceded in death by her mother and father Joe B. and Mary Davis Anderson; husband D.L. Butler; daughter Patricia “Pat” Robinson Grizzle; brothers Doyle and J.B. Anderson; sisters Cona Ravan, Verbie Butler and Bonnie Burgess.
She is survived by her grandson Lamar Grizzle and his wife Mandy Grizzle; great-grandsons Jared and Daniel Grizzle; great-granddaughter Allison Grizzle Honeycutt and her husband Chris Honeycutt; great-great-grandchildren Dylan and Rylee Honeycutt; nieces Doris Burzynski and Beth Elliott; nephews Jerry Burgess and Ronnie Anderson; several great nieces and nephews; a special care-giver of six years, Karen McKee; and Purple Gunter, who was like a daughter.
The family would like to thank Northeast Georgia Hospice and the Resting Nest of Gainesville for being so helpful and loving to Alice in her last days.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, November 17, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate and a eulogy will be given by Mrs. Karen McKee. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Susan Leona Pruitt King: Obituary

Mrs. Susan Leona Pruitt King, age 67, of Stockbridge, GA passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018.
Mrs. King was born on February 13, 1951 in Gainesville, FL to the late Robert Lee Pruitt and Pauline Lunsford Pruitt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Robyn Pruitt Giadrosich. Mrs. King was employed with the Thompson Hine Law Firm. She was known as Susie to her family and friends. Her grandchildren and adopted grandchildren, with great love and affection, gave her the same endearing name. The highlight of Susie’s life was her annual trips to Mountain Lakes with her grandchildren. Susie loved the Northeast GA Mountains.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Ginger and Troy Gwinn, McDonough, GA; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Neil and Marlee Sanders, McDonough, GA; granddaughters Lexis Sanders and Halie Sanders, McDonough, GA; grandson John Agee, McDonough, GA; granddaughters Emily Gwinn and Natalie Gwinn, McDonough, GA; her “adopted” grandchildren Chris Waggoner, Nick Waggoner, Jonathan Waggoner, Christina Warhola, and Kyla Warhola; brother and sister-in-law Dr. Don and Theresa Pruitt, Hazard, KY; sister Gayle Bass, Cleveland, GA; sister and brother-in-law Judy and Stan Stover, Cleveland, GA; sister Sherry Hudson, Stockbridge, GA; sister and brother-in-law Joy and Larry Barker, Gainesville, GA; sister and brother-in-law Dale and John Waggoner, Ellenwood, GA; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Barbara W. Cox: Obituary

Barbara W. Cox, age 86, of Cumming, GA, ran into the arms of Jesus and her beloved husband and precious grandson on September 30, 2018, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was born July 4, 1932, the daughter of James Henderson Walker and Eudera Barton Walker. She was a resident of Cumming, GA in the Hamptons and a member of First Redeemer Church. Her two children survive Barbara, Debra Cox Malone (William) of Charleston, SC and Ronald James Cox of Dawsonville, GA. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia “Dee” Hedges (Dayton), sister-in-law, Betty Walker, and her grandchildren, Bradley Malone (Julia), Ryan Malone (Jennifer), and Cody Walker Cox. Grandson, Mason James Cox preceded her in death in 2014. She was a great-grandmother to five great-grands, Caroline, Sarah, Kellen, Kayleigh and Maddux as well as an aunt to nieces and nephews, James Hedges (Allison), John Hedges (Lisa), Sandi Walker Scoggins (Michael), and William Walker.
Barbara and her husband, Air Force Captain William Henry “Wild Bill” Cox, were married on June 1, 1955 in San Angelo, TX, on the day Bill received his pilot wings. Their daughter, Debra, came along the next year. Soon they were off to California, where son, Ron, arrived. They were then stationed in Godmanchester, England. No one could have foreseen the tragedy to come – Bill was killed in a plane crash on a cross-country flight in February 1963. Barbara came back to Mississippi to start a life as a widowed, single mom with her two young children and to be near friends and family. She became an accomplished horsewoman who had an array of horses that brought her so much joy over the years in and around Columbus, MS. Art was also her passion and she was a gifted oil painting artist as well as learning the art of creating Faberge eggs. Barbara would later move to Atlanta to be closer to her sister and brother (Theron Wesley Walker, who preceded her in death) and begin a career at Rich’s Department Store, where she would retire after a full tenure in the China and Silver Departments.
She enjoyed homes around the Atlanta area in Dunwoody, Roswell and on Lake Lanier before settling in Cumming, GA. Barbara never remarried. And on the day she drew her last breath on this earth side of heaven, Bill’s picture remained close, on her nightstand, as it had since the day they were married. Theirs is a true love story that stood the test of time. And now, she is reunited with her first love.
A woman of determination and independence, Barbara chose to live alone with her fur babies, Cujo, her Yorkie and Shadow, her rescued tabby. Since January of this year, she endured several illnesses and many months and days in the hospital and Chestnut Ridge Rehabilitation Center to recover. She enjoyed being back “home” in her son’s home for a short time before becoming the new social butterfly at Sandy Springs Place.
Her children, along with family and close friends, will pilgrimage to Barbara’s childhood homestead in Columbus, MS this week and honor her wishes, plant a tree and share the vast memories of this beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and faithful friend.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the entire staff of Sandy Springs Place Memory Care Center for the loving care they provided for Barbara since her move there last month. Also, our deepest gratitude goes to the 1st floor doctors, nurses and staff of Northside Hospital/Atlanta Women’s Center for helping so compassionately in our last hours together and for the gracious gift of time in the aftermath.

September 21, 2018 (Dahlonega) Northview Orthopaedic Associates, an established orthopaedic practice with more than 25 years serving residents with a range of orthopaedic needs in Dawson, Forsyth, Hall, Lumpkin, and Union counties, recently opened a walk-in sprain and strain clinic located at the practice’s main office, 70 Ansley Drive in Dahlonega. Snow Sprawl: Burnt Mountain Classic turnout better than expected

The Burnt Mountain Classic took place on Friday night and Saturday at Pickens Co. High School. The Classic comes with high expectations by the teams attending – and although inclement weather forced school cancellations throughout the week – the tournament still lived up to the bill.
Although the weather was rough all week, 15 of 19 Varsity teams that were scheduled came off the buses ready to strap on their head gear and hit the mat. Fannin County was one of 22 varsity teams scheduled to attend but like a handful of the teams who cancelled, they followed the school cancellation schedule due to potential hazardous road conditions.
The acclaimed Gilmer Bobcats varsity squad, who have been living up to their legacy of absolute domination all season long, was originally scheduled to attend as well. After speaking with head coach Josh Ghobadpor about his decision to give his varsity the weekend off, he stated that with the weather being what it was during the week, they hadn’t been able to practice. Rather than put his varsity in a high-pressure situation so close to area and sectionals, Ghobadpor focused instead on taking his junior varsity team to compete in the JV Scramble.
“We tried to get to the gym to train but with ice on the roads we didn’t want to take any chances. This weekend we decided to bring our JV and let them get the extra work in, though. After all the JV is the future of Bobcat wrestling,” Ghobadpor told TeamFYNSports.
As the wrestlers laced up and shook hands, match-by-match the competition began to heat up right away. Pickens, Lumpkin, Creekview, Etowah, Cherokee High, Calhoun, Alcoa, Milton, Sequoyah, Chestatee, Towns, SE Whitfield, Walker, West Hall and River Ridge all came in pursuit of conquest.
With each win or loss, the cream began to rise to the top. While all in attendance had much to be proud of, two standout teams battled for the heralded prize of tournament champions. As the dust (and sweat) settled, congratulations went to the Creekview High School Grizzlies for capturing the crown in the team scoring with 219 points. Narrowly taking the runner up award in the team points was the host: the Pickens County High School Dragons.
On Saturday, the action heated up with the JV Scramble. The young freshmen and sophomore athletes showed up and showed out on the mats with Calhoun Yellow Jackets taking the JV trophy. Individual award winners from Pickens County included: Zach Meadows(113 lbs) 2nd Place, C.J. Murphy(120 lbs) 2nd Place, Joseph Ferguson(152 lbs) 2nd Place Michael Burrell(160 lbs) 1st Place, Tyler Vreeland(170 lbs), Kellie Dover(182 lbs) 3rd Place and Dalton Bruhner(195 lbs) 4th Place.

Lady Rebels Victorious over Indians

The game was close from the beginning to the end. Both teams were coming from a loss prior to the matchup and were determined to get a win. The Lumpkin County Lady Indians traveled to Fannin County this past Saturday to take on the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Rebels started off with the ball from tip-off. Rebel, Savada Collins, led Fannin in scoring with eleven points due to her drive to win. Lady Indians, Maddie Self and Mackenzie Pulley, led Lumpkin in scoring by each putting seven points on the board. The Lady Indians played in a zone defense which put the Rebels relying on passes to get open shots. Lumpkin double teamed Fannin and trapped them in the corner to keep them from scoring which proved to be effective in the first quarter. At the end of the first, the Lady Indians had a 6-2 lead over the Rebels.
With the second quarter starting, the Lady Rebels began to come up with ways to get to the basket past the Indians defense. Fannin started to drive the lane through the defense and draw fouls. The Rebels also started to run plays up top made for a zone defense. The plays moved the defense around with the ball and left Rebel posts wide open. Lady Rebel, Hope Franklin, had a good game from the block where she contributed seven points for Fannin. Makenzie McClure had grit down low which allowed her to put four more points on the board for the Rebels. Another Rebel post, Bailey Whitener, had rebounds that resulted in her scoring two more points for her team. The Rebels went into halftime only one point behind the Indians with a score of 17-16.
The intensity came alive at the beginning of the third quarter. With Lumpkin finding new ways to score, so did Fannin. The Lady Indians saw that the Rebels had a weak offside defense and took advantage of it. Lumpkin would draw Fannin to one side, leaving an open backdoor where the Lady Indians would come in and make wide open layups. With the Lady Indians adding onto their score, the Rebels did the same. Fannin started to take and make outside shots. Lady Rebel, Maleah Stepp, contributed five points for her team with her hustle and ability to make outside shots. Morgan Patton also added five points to Fannin’s score with her ankle-breaking moves. Out of Patton’s five points, three of them were from the three point shot that put Fannin in the lead for the first time in the game. Fannin finally took the lead at the end of the third with a score of 25-23.
Both teams fought until the end. Lumpkin would have the ball one second and then Fannin would have it the next. Each team wanted to win and you could tell by their performance on the court. Despite Lumpkin’s attempt to take their lead back, Fannin kept it and had a 34-31 victory over the Lady Indians.
The Lady Rebels win puts their overall record at 8-8 while the Lady Indians stand at 6-8. Catch the Lady Rebels next game on January 9 as they take on East Hall at home starting at 6!

Mrs. Janie Holman, age 78, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2019.
Mrs. Holman was born in Crawfordville, GA on December 19, 1940 to the late Jimmie B. and Dona Frances Wilson Shealey. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband James M. Holman, daughter Jamie Holman, son James Holman, great-grandson Hunter Holman, and sister Marion Holbrook. Mrs. Holman was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Holman enjoyed her trips to the casino, ceramics, cross-word books, and the outdoors.
