Mr. Johnny Ray Hood, age 59, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2019.
Johnny was born in Duluth on March 29, 1960 to the late Harold Hunter and Lillie Mae Scott. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Lisa Hood. Johnny was a truck driver for Thomas Concrete. He was a hard worker and loved to provide for his family. Johnny loved his grandchildren and they called him “Papa Johnny”. He was an avid NASCAR fan. For his pastime Johnny loved to play poker, gamble, attend auctions, and yard sales.
Survivors include his daughters Christie Payne (James Lee Berry), Dahlonega, and Tina Weaver (Cory), Gainesville; sons Michael Hood (Haley), Dahlonega, and Terry Hood (Ashley), Gainesville; daughter Sharon Christy (Randy), Dahlonega; brother Emmett Hunter (Denise), Grantville; thirteen grandchildren; cousins Randy Hood, Douglasville, Ronnie Hood, Smyrna, and Donna Davis (Steve), Alabama; aunt Sue Hood, Douglasville; and other relatives.
A memorial service for Johnny will be 2:00 PM Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Hood and the Rev. Ronnie Hood will officiate. Johnny’s wishes were to be cremated.

Mrs. Madge Whelchel, age 83, of Dahlonega passed away May 4, 2019.
Mrs. Whelchel was born on May 5, 1935 to the late Luster and Ruby Smith Grant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Joe D. Whelchel; son John William Whelchel; sons-in-law Bill Hanson and Jimmy Early; sisters Nadine Holland, and Bernice Reeves; and brother Theo Grant. Mrs. Whelchel was a member of Auraria Community Club and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She loved playing the guitar. Mrs. Whelchel was a member of Etowah Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters Brenda Anne Hanson, Dahlonega, and Martha Elliott Early, Blairsville; daughters and sons-in-law Rhonda Whelchel Huckeba and Carl Stowers, Dawsonville, and Carolyn and Big John McMahan, Sweetwater, TN; brother and sister-in-law Wayne and Sally Faye Grant; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Monday May 6, 2019 at Etowah Baptist Church. The Rev. Sam Rawlins will officiate. Interment will follow in the Etowah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Mr. Polaske loved football and poker, most especially Texas Hold’em. Mrs. Mildred Cowart Freeman, age 89, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, February 25, 2019.
Mrs. Freeman was born in Cumming on October 6, 1929 to the late William Guy Cowart and Nola Cowart Miles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Billy D. Freeman, son-in-law Robert Jack Peck, grandson-in-law Cecil Peels, brothers James Cowart and Lloyd Cowart. Mrs. Freeman was a seamstress and homemaker. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Adairsville. Mrs. Freeman faithfully attended Yellow Creek Baptist Church and she was an active member of the Yellow Creek Ladies Goodwill Circle. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she was affectionately called “Mawmaw”.
Survivors include her daughter Patricia Ann Peck, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law Charles Marion Freeman and Sherry Lynn Sutton; grandchildren Stephanie and Jerald Sargent Jr., Tracie and Jeremy Grizzle, Trina and Casey Jones, Christy Peels, Deeann Freeman, and Tonya and Ryan Brown; great-grandchildren Drew Sargent, Madison Peels, Haleigh Sargent, Jordan Jones, Carson Peels, Autumn Freeman, Gavin Grizzle, Emma Kate Brown, Peytyn Freeman, Bella Freeman, Enslee Brown, Colton Jones, and Gabriella Grizzle; ex-daughter-in-law Barbara Freeman; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

James (Jim) Roderick McFarland

James (Jim) McFarland, age 87, of Dahlonega, GA died Thursday, January 31, 2019. He was born on June 29, 1931 to Russell and Vera McFarland in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Jim graduated from LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls, N.Y. in 1949 and from Alfred University in 1953 with an Accounting Degree. He then served in the U.S. Navy including two years as a buyer for the Navy Commissary in Norfolk, VA and two years with the Supply Division of the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.
Following his honorary discharge, he joined the Cost Accounting Department of Moore Business Forms in Niagara Falls, N.Y. in 1957. In 1962, he was transferred to the Thurmont, MD Plant as Accounting Supervisor. Six years later, in 1970, he was transferred to Manchester, N.H. as Cost/Accounting Manager for the new Moore Plant that was then under construction. In 1972, James was transferred to the Rediform Division of Moore in Paramus, N.J. as Accounting Manager and later was named Comptroller. He remained at the Paramus location until his retirement in 1987, with 30 years of service.
He married Sandra Helm Bredfeldt on June 27, 1987 in Roscoe, N.Y. at a weekend long celebration shared by 50 guests, including five of six children from former marriages. Their marriage was performed by Sandra’s brother Bob, a Presbyterian minister. Jim was an avid golfer and played varsity basketball for LaSalle High School, Alfred University, and the U.S. Navy in the Mediterranean.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Sandra; sons Michael (Margaret) of Corning, N.Y., Steven (Karen) of East Hampton, N.Y., and William (Nicole) of Wilmington, N.C.; daughter Dianne (John) Connolly of Warwick, N.Y.; stepdaughter Robin (Michael) Prucha of Osprey, FL; and stepson Erik (Kathryn) Bredfeldt of Gainesville, FL. Jim is also survived by grandchildren: Dianne’s children Kevin, Megan, Shane, and Brian; Steven’s daughter Darcy; Williams’s children Camden and Hudson; Robin’s daughter Brielle; and Erik’s children Shearod and Emma.
Following Jim’s wishes, there will be no Memorial Service in Dahlonega after his cremation. Rather, his ashes will one day be combined with Sandra’s and strewn in the Appalachians. They moved to Dahlonega in 2010 and felt they already had a toehold in Paradise.

Mrs. Joyce Sullens Parrish, age 65, of Dahlonega passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following a period of declining health.
Born April 27, 1953 to parents Floyd W. and Alma Hulsey Sullens, Joyce was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was a retired customer service manager with Walmart and was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by siblings; Hoyt Sullens, Mary Nell Jarrard and Joe Hulsey. Dr. Marion “Doc” Hollis Tanksley, age 81, of Blairsville passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019.
Dr. Tanksley was born in Habersham County on March 22, 1937 to the late A.L. and Esther Eller Tanksley. He served his country honorably in the US Marine Corps and also in the US Navy as a pilot. Dr. Tanksley was a husband, father, surgeon, physician, and missionary. He was a finisher! After Dr. Tanksley retired from practicing medicine in the United States, he lived in China where he taught, practiced medicine, and served his Lord Jesus Christ on the mission field.
Survivors include his brothers Verlyn Tanksley (Sarah), Roswell, and Wallace Tanksley (Janet), Atlanta; and sister Dorothy Guyton, Loganville.

Mr. Robert Scott Napier, 59, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center
In Gainesville.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on April 25, 1959 to parents Dan and Sylvia Smith Napier, Scott had lived in Dahlonega the past six
months having moved here from West Virginia. He had previously lived in White County for two years where he served as
associate pastor at Cleveland Church of God.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Connie Bennett Napier, his children; Carrie Napier
(Justin Ravan), Kayla Dingess (Jordan), and Scotty Napier(Emily Wood), grandchildren; Aubrey Sue Dingess and Olivia Anna
Dingess, all of Dahlonega. Other relatives also survive.

Mrs. Janett Shreffler, age 83, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2018.
Mrs. Shreffler was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on January 10, 1935 to the late Jess and Bessie Moose Thomasson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Ginger Shreffler Lee; granddaughter Erica Berry; son-in-law C.F. Lingerfelt; sisters Jessie Mae Thomasson, Bertha Lingerfelt, Bonnie Wheeler, Rita Campbell, Dorothy Thomasson, and Glenda Shoffeitt; and brothers David Thomasson, and Bobby Lee Thomasson.
Mrs. Shreffler retired from Pinetree/Mohawk Industries after many years of dedicated work. She loved to color and cook. Mrs. Shreffler loved her children and grandchildren who affectionately called her “Granny”. Some of her family’s greatest memories of “Granny” was her love for traveling and long walks on the beach. Mrs. Shreffler was a member of Harmony Church of God in Suches.
Survivors include her sons Ronnie “Pete” Abercrombie, Tim (Loretta) Abercrombie, and Alan “Pie” Shreffler, all of Dahlonega; daughters Sue (Buster) Hicks, Karen Lingerfelt, both of Dahlonega, Terry (Jeff) Forrester, Gainesville, and Elaine (Phil) Leger, Dahlonega; son-in-law Horace Lee; grandsons Scott Abercrombie, David Abercrombie, Randy (April) Hicks, Kevin (Amanda) Lee, Shawn Berry, Aaron Lechelt, and D.J. Alice Jean Anderson Butler, age 87, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018. She was born in Lumpkin County on September 4, 1931.
Alice worked as a food inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she retired in January of 1991. She was of the Christian faith and was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Dahlonega, GA. Alice spent many years of her life traveling the country with her husband of almost thirty years, D.L. Butler. She was friends with all and never met a stranger. She loved crafts and loved to bake. She made everyone that entered her home feel welcomed.
Alice was preceded in death by her mother and father Joe B. and Mary Davis Anderson; husband D.L. Butler; daughter Patricia “Pat” Robinson Grizzle; brothers Doyle and J.B. Anderson; sisters Cona Ravan, Verbie Butler and Bonnie Burgess.
She is survived by her grandson Lamar Grizzle and his wife Mandy Grizzle; great-grandsons Jared and Daniel Grizzle; great-granddaughter Allison Grizzle Honeycutt and her husband Chris Honeycutt; great-great-grandchildren Dylan and Rylee Honeycutt; nieces Doris Burzynski and Beth Elliott; nephews Jerry Burgess and Ronnie Anderson; several great nieces and nephews; a special care-giver of six years, Karen McKee; and Purple Gunter, who was like a daughter.
The family would like to thank Northeast Georgia Hospice and the Resting Nest of Gainesville for being so helpful and loving to Alice in her last days.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, November 17, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate and a eulogy will be given by Mrs. Karen McKee. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Susan Leona Pruitt King, age 67, of Stockbridge, GA passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018.
Mrs. King was born on February 13, 1951 in Gainesville, FL to the late Robert Lee Pruitt and Pauline Lunsford Pruitt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Robyn Pruitt Giadrosich. Mrs. King was employed with the Thompson Hine Law Firm. She was known as Susie to her family and friends. Her grandchildren and adopted grandchildren, with great love and affection, gave her the same endearing name. The highlight of Susie’s life was her annual trips to Mountain Lakes with her grandchildren. Susie loved the Northeast GA Mountains.

Barbara W. Cox: Obituary

Barbara W. Cox, age 86, of Cumming, GA, ran into the arms of Jesus and her beloved husband and precious grandson on September 30, 2018, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was born July 4, 1932, the daughter of James Henderson Walker and Eudera Barton Walker. She was a resident of Cumming, GA in the Hamptons and a member of First Redeemer Church. Her two children survive Barbara, Debra Cox Malone (William) of Charleston, SC and Ronald James Cox of Dawsonville, GA. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia “Dee” Hedges (Dayton), sister-in-law, Betty Walker, and her grandchildren, Bradley Malone (Julia), Ryan Malone (Jennifer), and Cody Walker Cox. Grandson, Mason James Cox preceded her in death in 2014. She was a great-grandmother to five great-grands, Caroline, Sarah, Kellen, Kayleigh and Maddux as well as an aunt to nieces and nephews, James Hedges (Allison), John Hedges (Lisa), Sandi Walker Scoggins (Michael), and William Walker.
Barbara and her husband, Air Force Captain William Henry “Wild Bill” Cox, were married on June 1, 1955 in San Angelo, TX, on the day Bill received his pilot wings. Their daughter, Debra, came along the next year. Soon they were off to California, where son, Ron, arrived. They were then stationed in Godmanchester, England. No one could have foreseen the tragedy to come – Bill was killed in a plane crash on a cross-country flight in February 1963. Barbara came back to Mississippi to start a life as a widowed, single mom with her two young children and to be near friends and family. She became an accomplished horsewoman who had an array of horses that brought her so much joy over the years in and around Columbus, MS. Art was also her passion and she was a gifted oil painting artist as well as learning the art of creating Faberge eggs. Barbara would later move to Atlanta to be closer to her sister and brother (Theron Wesley Walker, who preceded her in death) and begin a career at Rich’s Department Store, where she would retire after a full tenure in the China and Silver Departments.
She enjoyed homes around the Atlanta area in Dunwoody, Roswell and on Lake Lanier before settling in Cumming, GA. Barbara never remarried. And on the day she drew her last breath on this earth side of heaven, Bill’s picture remained close, on her nightstand, as it had since the day they were married. Theirs is a true love story that stood the test of time. And now, she is reunited with her first love.
A woman of determination and independence, Barbara chose to live alone with her fur babies, Cujo, her Yorkie and Shadow, her rescued tabby. Since January of this year, she endured several illnesses and many months and days in the hospital and Chestnut Ridge Rehabilitation Center to recover. She enjoyed being back “home” in her son’s home for a short time before becoming the new social butterfly at Sandy Springs Place.
Her children, along with family and close friends, will pilgrimage to Barbara’s childhood homestead in Columbus, MS this week and honor her wishes, plant a tree and share the vast memories of this beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and faithful friend.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the entire staff of Sandy Springs Place Memory Care Center for the loving care they provided for Barbara since her move there last month. Also, our deepest gratitude goes to the 1st floor doctors, nurses and staff of Northside Hospital/Atlanta Women’s Center for helping so compassionately in our last hours together and for the gracious gift of time in the aftermath.

Charles (Chuck) Howard Dobson, Scotsman, businessman, world traveler, dog lover, and foodie died on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the age of 74.
Born in Westminister, Maryland on January 14, 1944, he graduated from Westminster High School in 1962 and enlisted in the Maryland National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. Chuck attended Catonsville Community College and the University of Maryland for his undergraduate studies and completed graduate professional education at the University of Virginia and Vanderbilt University.
Chuck had a long career in the financial services industry, serving in managerial to Vice President roles with Maryland National Bank, Union Trust Company in Baltimore, MD, Southeast Bank/First Union in Miami, FL, Huntington Bank in Columbus, OH, and Midfirst Credit Union in Middletown, OH. He completed his corporate career working for NCR as a consultant and project manager, where he advised banking clients on financial automation technology.
Later, Chuck paired his entrepreneurial spirit with his love of man’s best friend by starting and operating a natural pet supply business in the Suwanee, Georgia area. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he used his background in entrepreneurship and finance working for the U.S. Government processing emergency loans for disaster-stricken small business owners. Even after retiring on Lake Lanier in 2006, Chuck continued to bring his experience to several local businesses.
Chuck enjoyed surrounding himself and spending time with strong, intelligent, and entertaining people. He found his equal in, wooed, and married Judy Mitchell Dobson, of Johnstown, PA, a little over forty years ago. They traveled extensively, experiencing new places, flavors, and hunting down unique antiques. Together they instilled the importance of loyalty, responsibility, and hard work into their beloved son Brice Andrew Dobson. Brice is married to Paige Parker, formerly of Cumming.
Chuck delighted in sharing the things he enjoyed and found meaningful with his friends and family…his flower garden, stories about his dog, his Scottish heritage, and where to find a good meal. Never one to show up underdressed, Chuck took pride in and was known for his distinguished style. He was a long-time member of Duck’s Unlimited and the Clan Donnachaidh Society of the South.
Chuck was a member of First United Methodist Church of Gainesville. He had quiet and private faith and belief in God, which he lived through day-to-day kindness, charity, and support to his friends and family.
Visitation will be held at Dahlonega Funeral Home on Thursday, August 9 from 6-8 PM and at 1 PM, Friday, August 10 with Memorial Service beginning at 2 PM.
