Special Weather Statement for Far North Georgia
Community January 5, 2022Motorists stranded in the midst of winter storm
Community, News February 8, 2020Dahlonega, Ga. – Many motorists are finding themselves stranded as winter weather sweeps across our area.
Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard has been keeping citizens up-to-date via Facebook on the happenings in the county.
“Please be advised that the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office is experiencing a HIGH volume of calls for accidents,” Jarrard stated in an earlier announcement. “I have checked the roads this morning and they are slick. Please stay off the roadways unless it is an emergency.”
Jarrard went on to say that the Lumpkin County Roads Department and Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) can more effectively and efficiently treat roadways when they are clear of other motorists.
Despite the warnings to stay off roads, motorists ventured out and many have now become stranded as some roadways are now impassable.
Among the roads that have been marked impassable are Cavender Creek Rd,Town Creek Church Rd, Calhoun Rd, Crown Mtn Dr, Morrison Moore Pkwy (east and west), N. Grove St, Auraria Rd, Burnt Stand, S. Chestatee, Hwy 52 W, Red Oak Flats, Hwy 400.
Travel has become treacherous not only from ice/snow but also due to the numerous vehicles that have been abandoned.
Lumpkin County Government released the following statement:
“County crews are out treating bridges and known problem areas. Throughout the day we will continue treating, but unnecessary travel is not recommended. Additionally, it does not appear that there will be an opportunity for the roads to clear overnight so black ice is a strong possibility. We will continue to keep you informed of conditions, but be careful!”
All Lumpkin County Emergency Personnel are still urging residents to stay off roadways unless absolutely necessary to get out. Please call 911 for all life threatening emergencies and for all others needing assistance please call the county’s non-emergency number at 706-864-3633.
FYN will continue to bring you weather updates throughout the day.
