TAMPA, Fla. – Securing their first top-10 win in program history along the way, the No. 13 University of North Georgia women’s tennis team blew past No. 9 Florida Southern, 6-1, Wednesday on the road.
The Nighthawks got off to a hot start, courtesy of wins from No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Holly Bennett was reunited with partner Vaishali Jorge at No. 1 doubles, and the move paid off, as they cruised to a 6-2 win. This move meant the partnership of Emma Etelalahti and Adrienne Bofinger returned, and they clinched the point after a 7-6 victory.
UNG showed no signs of nerves in singles as Bofinger and Bennett won quickly to give the Nighthawks a 3-0 lead. Bofinger won 6-1, 6-2, and Bennett sharply followed, completing an unbeaten day out after recording a 6-2, 6-4 win. Cibeles Zuddy then clinched the tie with a 6-0, 6-3 win, moving North Georgia to a 9-1 record.
The Nighthawks’ spring break road trip culminates Thursday morning as they finish with a match against Bluefield State. First serve is scheduled for 9 a.m.

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, junior, Marley Stowers, hit a grand slam over the left field wall, pushing No.3 UNG softball team to a 7-1 win over Southern Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

Kaylyn Anthony scored the game’s first run on a SWU error in the first inning of the opening game of the Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic. After loading the bases, the Nighthawks got Stowers up to bat and, with a full count, she put the softball well out of the park to push the lead to 5-0.

Anthony struck an RBI single in the fourth inning before Katelyn Perry tacked on another run ins the sixth on an RBI single. The Warriors pushed a run across in the top of the seventh to bring the game to its final score.

Smith named PBC pitcher of the week

University of North Georgia softball player, Kylee Smith, has been named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week. The conference announced their consideration on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith was 2-0 in three NFCA Leadoff Classic appearances, allowing just two hits in 13.2 innings, with a total of 24 strikeouts. She also picked up her first win against No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne University, going all seven innings with two hits allowed and one walk while striking out 15.
The UNG sophomore pitched five, no-hit innings, landing a 6-3 win over Hillsdale. Overall, Smith struck out six, before pitching 1.2 innings of relief against California University of Pennsylvania, where she struck out three with no hits nor walks allowed. Smith is currently tied for the league lead in wins and is second in strikeouts.

UNG President visits LC Library to discuss her new children’s book

University of North Georgia President, Dr. Bonita Jacobs, visited the Lumpkin County Library for a book reading/signing of her new book, “UNG The Gold I See!” on Thursday. The children’s book is one of five that will be released by Dr. Jacobs and the UNG Press.

Dr. Jacobs told FYN that she was inspired to write the children’s books after she was gifted a copy of Barbara Walsh’s “The Poppy Lady.” “I loved the idea of using a children’s book to tell the history of North Georgia.” She also explains that the “genesis” of the book was to raise money for scholarships, “I’m very passionate about scholarships.” Dr. Jacobs explained, “and all profits from my books go straight to scholarship funds.” Jillian Murphy, Assistant Managing Editor with UNG Press added the book has sold enough copies to fund a few scholarships already.

Dr. Jacobs also expressed gratitude for the book’s illustrator, J’anell Short, who is also Dr. Jacob’s sister, “We were able to save a lot on costs and also have a quick release date, thanks to her willingness to help.” She also added, “I’m very heartened by how well the book has been received.”

UNG will host NCAA Division II Showcase on ESPN3

According to the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, UNG will host the NCAA Division II Showcase in front of a national audience, as both Nighthawks basketball teams receive Columbus State on Wednesday, January 9, in the Peach Belt Conference. The games will broadcast on ESPN3 and are scheduled for 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
As established in the NCAA’s Showcase agreement, UNG will have five different sports broadcasting nationally from their home campus, which makes them the first school in Division II to accomplish this achievement.
The nationally televised doubleheader is part of the reward for winning the NCAA Award of Excellence for the Operation Nighthawks of Honor initiative back in 2017. As part of Wednesday’s doubleheader, the UNG athletic department will hold its annual ceremony at halftime of the women’s game honoring those who were killed during, or associated with, the Korean War. Each of the university’s teams was assigned a UNG graduate or former student that were killed in action while serving the country.
The game will serve as a “blue-out,” with games and contests throughout the night for fans to enjoy. The UNG Dahlonega Student Government Association will give out 1,000 free t-shirts, and there will also be a raffle throughout the night to benefit UNG’s Make-A-Wish initiative.

UNG baseball schedule announced for 2019 season

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, head baseball coach, Tom Cantrell, has announced the 2019 schedule for the UNG baseball program. The 2019 schedule includes 29 home games, which will be held at Bob Stein Stadium.
Two of the eight teams that will be matching up in the 2019 season made it to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Southern Indiana and Columbus State and will go against the Nighthawks during the upcoming season.
UNG will face USI February 15-17, in Dahlonega, before a trip to Columbus May 3-5 to finish the regular season.
UNG’s opener will be against Florida Tech, before opening up at home against Palm Beach Atlantic February 8-10. After the series against Southern Indiana, the Nighthawks will also open in the home Peach Belt battle against Flagler, to end a nine game season.

Thankful Hearts hosts sixth-annual Take & Bake

Thankful Hearts Lumpkin held their sixth-annual “Take & Bake” on Tuesday, where they handed out thanksgiving groceries to local families in need of assistance this holiday season. Founding member, Amberly Enich, explained to Fetch Your News that the charity started seven years ago, with a single idea on how to help Dahlonega families who could not afford groceries for Thanksgiving.

In the spring of 2012, Enich and James, along with founding members, Stephanie Jones, Molly Jackson, Bridget Barker, and Michele Grainger, hosted their first annual Thankful Hearts charity event; their goal was to raise enough money to feed at least 10 Lumpkin County families, but they surpassed that goal, and they were able to feed 29 families. Each year since, they have exceeded their goal, and 2018 was their highest year so far, providing groceries to 78 local families.
Throughout the past six years, Thankful Hearts has earned support from local businesses such as, Walmart, Dahlonega Funeral Home, and Refrigiwear, through monetary donations, food donations, and even food storage.
Take & Bake is the event held each year, in which the receiving families are able to pick up their groceries from Thankful Hearts. Enich expressed her gratitude for the people and businesses who help feed locals each Thanksgiving, “This was just an idea that started, and I truly never imagined that it would turn into this. We’ve never had to beg for money or be stressed over nominations. There’s a true need in LC & we’re just so thankful that we are able to help fill that need”

New children’s book celebrates UNG Dahlonega

The University of North Georgia President, Bonita Jacobs, has written the first of five children’s book that will pay homage to each UNG campus. The book was published by UNG Press, and is titled, “UNG The Gold I See.”
According to a press release from UNG, the children’s book is designed to engage readers, “Of all ages through its multi-generational main characters. Benjamin Brown, daughter Jamie, and grandson Tommy each have a different goal during Visitors Day at the Dahlonega Campus. The grandfather wants to recall the memories of his years in the Corps of Cadets, while Tommy’s mother wants to remember her years in UNG’s nursing program. Tommy wants to find the legendary treasure: the gold hidden somewhere on campus. He has Nigel the Nighthawk, UNG’s mascot, and a treasure map to guide him; his grandfather and mother have their memories.”
“UNG The Gold I See” will be available November 2018, in hardback copies and will be priced at $29.99.
The next book of the series, featuring the Gainesville campus, is scheduled to be released in 2019.

UNG men’s soccer defeat Georgia Southwestern 3-1

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the men’s soccer team walked away with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southwestern Saturday night.
The Nighthawks scored twice in the first 20 minutes, with Adam Dowdy gaining the first goal in the 12th minute, off a Jarrod Smalley free kick. Just seven minutes later, Smalley put home a goal to double the Nighthawk lead off a pass from Till Lammertz.
The ‘Canes cut the lead in half in the 29th minute when Chris Avery scored, but UNG put the game away in the 56th minute off a Matheus Abreu to Prince Domafriyie connection that pushed the match to its final score.
The Nighthawks are scheduled to play Clayton State in the PBC quarterfinals on Tuesday, at the UNG Soccer Complex.

According to a press release by the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, UNG, Rilee Seering, scored her only goal of the season in overtime with the University of North Carolina Pembroke. The UNC Bravehawks pushed past the UNG women’s soccer team Tuesday, October 23rd in a 1-0 finish.
The Bravehawks came out quick in the first half of play, “firing nine shots toward frame and forcing Hannah Goudy to make four big saves to keep the match level. After halftime, UNG put forth the most pressure, shooting 11 times on UNCP’s goal but only putting one shot on frame, ” During overtime, UNC freshman,Christine Rolfes, put in a cross from the right side of the field, finding Seering who went back post for the golden goal.

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, the men’s golf team holds ninth place in the Matt Days Invitational at Oak Mountain Gold Club after UNG junior, Tanner Merck, “carded a two-under 70 in the second round of the day.”

Merck had six birdies in the two rounds Monday, including four in the second 18 of the day. His one-under 143 is good for a tie for ninth individually in the tournament.
As a team, UNG shot back-to-back scores of 292 and sits 10 shots out of a three-way tie for second place after the first day of competition. Young Harris leads the tournament with a 36-hole total of 563. The Mountain Lions are 11 strokes ahead of Clayton State, Montevallo and West Georgia, who are all tied for second. Lee rounds out the top five.
Individually, YHC’s John Bolger shot a second-round score of six-under 66 to take the lead by one stroke over his teammate Cameron Kellett and Lee’s Dylan Lillard.
The Nighthawks will wrap up the tournament tomorrow with tee time set for 9am.

GREENWOOD, S.C. – After scoring the first six runs of the game in the first two innings, Lander scored the final 14 runs, defeating the University of North Georgia baseball team, 14-6, Friday night at Dolny Stadium.
Andres Perez got things started in the first inning, blasting a three-run shot over the wall in left to put UNG up, 3-0. The sophomore homered again in the next inning, another three-run bomb to left to double the Nighthawk lead. Lander started their response in the third with a two-run homer by Brice Kirven in the third inning to cut the lead to four. After two RBI singles in the fourth, a three-run blast by Carson Jones in the fifth gave the Bearcats a 7-6 lead. The next batter, Alex Conaway, hit a solo homer to extend the Bearcat lead to 8-6. The night was capped off by yet another homerun by LU, this one coming in the eighth inning. A three-run homer by Conner Davis gave the Bearcats the eight-run victory. City begins process of amending zoning ordinances

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Dahlonega’s City Council unanimously approved a motion to initiate the process of amending the city’s zoning ordinances Monday.
City Manager Bill Schmid explained that many, perhaps dozens, of the changes will involve minor changes in text, such as typos, while others may be significant. “Either way,” Schmid said, “there is a process to be followed.”
Rather than bring a laundry list of amendments to council, Schmid added that staff would prefer to bring them to council incrementally.
The motion council approved Monday does not short change the process. “It doesn’t commit you to any specific outcome,” Schmid said. “It will just let us begin the advertisement. There will still be a public hearing before the Planning Commission before it comes back to you in a work session.”
After the work session, council will still have the final vote on any proposed amendment.
Schmid said staff also has identified a couple of types of event centers the city has, or would like to have. Staff would need to propose definitions to accommodate changes to those zoning ordinances.
The University of North Georgia women’s basketball team won the Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships.
Monday was a day to recognize athletic excellence at the University of North Georgia. Mayor Sam Norton read a proclamation honoring the 2017-18 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team for an outstanding season. The Nighthawks posted a 29-5 record in winning the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship and the Peach Belt Tournament Championship before advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Coach Buffie Burson was named PBC Coach of the Year for the third time in her 24-year career. Abbie Franklin was chosen conference Freshman of the Year and Julie McKie was named PBC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Schmid said the city has applied for the Georgia Recreational Trails Program grant offered by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in the amount of $135,000. The grant requires a 20 percent city match. The grant would be used for the Yahoola High Trestle Trail. If the city receives the grant, Schmid said the project can be completed within two years
Council unanimously approved:
- A 5K Bike Ride event and Hancock Park rental Team Give Back Fundraiser;
- A change to the existing special event permit for Movies Under the Stars concessions;
- A grant to renovate the Visitor’s Center restrooms; and
- Ratification of the Cemetery Committee appointments.

Cantrell Adds Four During Early Signing Period

DAHLONEGA – Fresh off a historic season that included a NCAA Southeast Region Championship, head University of North Georgia baseball coach Tom Cantrell has announced the signing of four student-athletes during the early signing period last month. Cantrell has added Hunter Cain, Tim Conway, Jackson Hodnick and Bryant Pietri to the Nighthawk family.
Cain, a pitcher and first baseman from Dacula, Georgia, has played for Archer High School and Team Elite in the summer. He has been named a second-team All-County pitcher. His stats include a 1.81 ERA combined with a 5-0 record in 27 innings of work. At the plate, Cain hit .271 with one homer, two doubles and nine RBI. “Hunter is a big strong projectable player coming to us from Archer High School,” said Cantrell. “On the mound, Hunter has a power arm with some big upside and can throw multiple pitches for strikes. At the plate he is a strong physical hitter with some power potential. Hunter is a guy that attended one of our prospect camps and is a good fit for our program. He is a great young man from a good family and we are happy to have him on board here at North Georgia!” Conway, a right-handed utility player from Decatur, Georgia, hit .424 a year ago for Decatur High School and his summer team, the Colt .45’s. He hit four home runs, 10 doubles and 35 RBI, as well as stole 15 bases and had a 1.306 OPS. Conway was named to the All-County and All-Region First Team as well as the DeKalb County Player of the Month. “Tim is an extremely athletic player who can play multiple positions from Decatur High School,” Cantrell stated. “He has the potential to hit for average and hit for power and he can run as well. Tim has a great frame that he will continue to add on to and is very projectable. He is a toolsy player and we are excited to get him in the program! Tim will be a great addition to our team and we are excited to add him to the Nighthawk family! ” A right-handed pitcher from Evans, Georgia, and Greenbrier High School, Hodnick went 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 16 innings pitched this summer for Baseball Scoutz USA. He was named an honorable mention for the All-Region team. Cantrell said of Hodnick, “Jackson is a big strong pitcher from a quality program over at Greenbrier. He has great potential on the mound and his better days are ahead of him. He can throw multiple pitches for strikes and has a good hard breaking ball that he can throw on or off the plate for swings and misses. Jackson exemplifies what it means to be a student athlete as he is a great student as well. We are excited to welcome Jackson to the North Georgia family!” Pietri went 6-0 with two saves and an ERA of 0.23 last season for Loganville High School, marking the lowest ERA in LHS history. The righty threw 30 innings and struck out 30 batters as well. “Bryant is a quality young man from a great family coming to us from a successful Loganville program that has had some quality pitchers over the years and Bryant is another one that fits that mold,” said Cantrell. “He has a live fastball and a quality breaking ball and had a lot of success last season on a state championship team. Bryant has a loose athletic arm action and we are excited to see him reach his potential. He will be a great addition to our pitching staff next season!” |
