Mr. Joe Grizzle, age 78, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, September 6, 2019.
Joe was born on September 28, 1940 to the late Grady and Elizabeth Garrett Grizzle. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wives Rita Thomasson Grizzle and Shirley Tolbert Grizzle; daughter Lovetta Diane Grizzle; stepdaughter Diane Bridges; brothers John Robert Grizzle, Marvin Grizzle and Calvin Grizzle; sisters Sharon Sue Grizzle, Bertha Chambers and Betty Ruth Grizzle.
Joe worked in the timber industry and also truck farmed. He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, riding dirt roads and was always laughing and happy. Joe was a friend to all and will truly be missed. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Suches.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-laws Loretta and Tim Abercrombie, Dahlonega; Brooke and Timmy Gee, Gillsville; stepdaughter Wanda McDonald, Dahlonega; stepson Troy Bridges, Dahlonega; grandchildren Trent Gee and Suzanne Hitt; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Hitt and Dillon Anderson; sisters Janell Grizzle, Wanda Gilstrap and Lois Grizzle; brothers Tony Grizzle, Donald Grizzle, David Grizzle, Ralph Grizzle, Charles Grizzle, and Clyde Grizzle; special nephew Jackie Grizzle; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Monday, September 9, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Carder and Rev. Freddie Bryan will officiate. Interment will follow in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches. The family will receive friends from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Antifa threatens to disrupt American Patriot rally in Dahlonega

DAHLONEGA, Ga – Hundreds of local, state and federal law enforcement officers are bracing for the possibility of a violent confrontation during the American Patriot Rally to support President Donald Trump on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Chester Doles, a man who reportedly has ties to several white supremacist organizations received the original permit for the event. He withdrew his request, but shortly thereafter, Dustin Penner received a permit for the event.

Members of Atlanta Antifascists — a militant, left-wing group of black-clad anarchist thugs known for sparking violence at Trump rallies, is expected to hold a counter-demonstration. A post on the Atlanta Antifa Facebook page brands Doles as “a longtime neo-Nazi and fourth-generation Klansman” and, it says the rally “is an attempt by Doles to draw pro-Trump rightists closer to his own neo-Nazi politics.”
Members of their group say they are keeping a watchful eye on the event.
Some reports have indicated that Bikers for Trump Georgia would participate, but the organization’s Director Dale Herndon spoke with Fetch Your News today and issued the following statement: “There is no way, knowing what we know now about the history of the original event coordinator and knowing that he is still promoting this rally that we can attend as Bikers for Trump. The news media would have tried to tie it all back to the past. I could not put the bullseye on our President.”

Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said there would be a heavy law enforcement presence for the Trump rally. “I have nothing against either group. I’m hoping the event will be peaceful but we will enforce the law.”

Larson announces plans to run for re-election City Council Post 6

City Councilman, Ron Larson, confirmed that he will run for re-election for the Post 6 Dahlonega City Council seat.
Larson has served as a City Councilman since 2016, and in a recent social media post he announced, “I registered today to run for re-election to the Dahlonega City Council, Post #6. Election day is November 5th. I hope I can count on your support to serve you for another 4 years (2020-2023). It has been an honor to represent the citizens of Dahlonega since January 2016. Larson is also a part-time lecturer at the University of North Georgia, in the Mike Cottrell College of Business Department of Management and Marketing, where he teaches management, ethics, and strategic
planning. He is also a member of the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary, where he served as the club president from July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019. His extensive work experience includes serving as the manager of Achasta golf community, manager for The Lake Club at Reynolds Plantation, as well as several CFO positions, since 1981.
Led by Larson in 2018, the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club raised $20k for the assistance of the Lumpkin County Commission with the expedited installation of the Yahoola Creek Park splash pad for the benefit of Lumpkin County. During his current tenure as Post 6 City Councilman, Larson supported the installation of the Wayfare Signs around the Dahlonega City Square, the Historic Dahlonega Shuttle service, and the Dahlonega Gold Adventure All-Abilities park, as well as several other projects that have benefited Lumpkin County.

Boil water advisory in effect for Crooked Creek Subdivision

According to a press release from the Lumpkin County Water and Sewerage Authority,
“LCWSA experienced a water main break in the Crooked Creek Subdivision which caused a localized loss of system pressure. When this occurs a potential health hazard may exist in these areas of zero pressure from backflow of water of unknown quality into the water system. In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, all Crooked Creek residents that live on High Creek Drive, White Oak Trail and Oak Springs Trail that have experienced a water outage and/or low pressures are advised to “boil” all water prior to use for drinking, cooking, or preparing baby food. The water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil. Once LCWSA has tested the water and confirmed that the water in the distribution system is safe for human consumption, LCWSA will post a message on Lumpkin County’s Website and at High Creek Drive to notify the public that the boil water advisory has been lifted. Mrs. Carmen Waters Seitz, age 89, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, August 10, 2019.
Mrs. Seitz was born August 25, 1929 in Lumpkin County, the daughter of the late Andrew Robinson and Orphia Melinda Weaver Waters. She was a homemaker and member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Her parents, husband, Dean Seitz and son, Bob Seitz preceded her in death.
Survivors include: sons; Stanley and Larry Seitz both of Dahlonega, daughter; Joyce Hutcheson, Richmond, KY , sister; Bonnie Waters Milton, Dahlonega, 7 grandchildren, Ellen McMahan, Mindy Whitley, Jessica Cambron, Jason Seitz, Tracy McKinney, Gretchen Gentry, Stephanie Clifford, 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00pm from the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Calvin Ward officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie-in-state at the church from 1 until 2pm Monday.
The family will meet with friends Sunday from 4 until 8pm at Bernhardt Funeral Home.

Kenneth Michael Reese: Obituary

Mr. Kenneth Michael Reese, age 73, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, July 26, 2019.
Mr. Reese was born in Columbus, GA on September 19, 1945 to the late Leon and Annie Reese. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Sonny and Jimmy Reese. He was a member of the Dahlonega Presbyterian Church. Mr. Reese studied law and received his law degree at the University of Alabama and then earned his master’s degree in law at Emory University. Mr. Reese taught criminal justice at the University of North Georgia for 22 years. His passion was teaching and next to that was his students. Each one was special to him. Mr. Reese had taught at the University of Alaska and Georgia Southern University. Law was at his heart and his accomplishment as a legal representative on an Indian Reservation in Montana will always be remembered.
He was dearly loved by his wife, children, and close relatives. Mr. Reese was proud of his old movie collection and enjoyed spending time watching them. His favorite pastime was spending days at the beach. Mr. Reese will be deeply missed by his family.
Survivors include his wife Susan Reese, Dahlonega; son Mickey Reese, Dahlonega; daughter Anney Reese, Atlanta; son Bobbey Reese, CA; granddaughter Phoenix Waters; sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Don Stewart, Conyers; sister-in-law Connie Reese, Auburn, AL; sister and brother-in-law Olga and Flip Hoskin, Osteen, FL; sister-in-law Amelia Moore, Montgomery, AL; brother and sister-in-law Hayne and Cindy Hollis; and several close family members including nieces and nephews.
Private graveside services were held at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Mari Turner officiated.

Mr. Bret Wayne Truelove, age 61, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2019.
Bret Truelove was born in Hall County on November 30, 1957. He was preceded in death by his father Grady Truelove. Mr. Truelove served his country honorably in United States Army. He was affectionately called “Robo Papa” by his grandchildren. He was a member of Community Chapel Congregational Holiness Church.
Survivors include his wife Annie Truelove, Dahlonega; children Ruby and William Gannon, Baldwin; Candice Truelove, Jefferson; Misty and Tim Burnett, Gainesville; and Amber and Brian McCurry, Dahlonega; mother Lyle Moore, Toccoa; sister Lisa Hall; sister and brother-in-law Laris and Greg Gunn; brothers and sisters-in-laws Joel and Debbie Truelove and Steven and Dominic Thomason; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several step siblings, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Ralph Eugene Black Sr. 90, of Dahlonega left this earthly world to be with the Lord at 4:30 am on May 26, 2019.
Mr. Black was born August 5, 1928 in Atlanta, Ga to Joseph Johnson Black and Mazie Mae (Allison) Black. He was one of seven sons. Mr. Black served 5 years in the Marine Corp as a ranking Staff Sargent, he then attended Southern Technical Institute and Georgia Tech University. On July 3, 1955 in Atlanta, he married his beloved wife Esther Elizabeth House. They were married for 64 years. Together they had two daughters, Pat and Pam, and three sons, Ralph, Philip, and Robert. In addition he is survived by his two brothers, Thomas Black and Marvin Black, thirteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Mr. Blacks entrepreneurial spirit and tireless vision were manifested in various realms of Real Estate Development, General Construction, and as an owner in restaurants and car washes.
Mr. Black is remembered for his kindness, goodness, and his infectious laughter. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and all of God’s creation. He left an incredible legacy of love for his family.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday May 30, 2019 at Dahlonega United Methodist Church at 10 am. Family will receive friends at 9 am on Thursday at the church until the time of service. Interment will be held at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery where full military honor will be presented. The family has vocalized how meaningful it would be to have your attendance at the graveside and share in this celebration.

UNG sophomore named ITA All-American

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG women’s tennis player, Adrienne Bofinger, was named ITA All-American in singles action.

Bofinger is a UNG sophomore from Germany, and she finished the season 22-3. She played every match except for one at No. 1 and was named an All-Conference first teamer in singles action, as well as the Peach Belt Tournament Singles Most Valuable Player. Bofinger makes the second player in program history to be named an ITA All-American, joining Kathrin Waidner in 2017.

Washington named 2019 recipient of the Dissinger Reed Athletic Training Scholarship

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG’s Ariauna Washington was named 2019 recipient of the Dissinger Reed Athletic Training Scholarship, during the PBC athletic trainer annual symposium in Agusta, GA.
UNC Pembroke’s Frank A. Bastone III was also a recipient, and both students will receive financial support from Dissinger Reed as they continued their studies. Washington will attend UNG’s virtual campus for a degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Health & Physical Education while working at Young Harris. 2019 is the fifth year of the scholarship program.
Washington was a member of the UNG athletic training club and sports medicine club, serving as vice president of the latter until her graduation in May. She was a CARE Consortium Assistance worker at North Georgia her senior year and has worked for Atlanta United of Major League Soccer. She also worked at Harris County High School and Dawson County High School as a part of her UNG program.

In memory of Katy Ruth Wells O’Neal, age 95, of Cumming, Georgia entered into eternal life Wednesday, May 8, 2019. Mrs. O’Neal was born on March 16, 1924, in Royston, Georgia to the late Jesse L. Wells and Cordelia Winn Wells. She was a member of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church and a resident for many years at Gracemont Assisted Living in Cumming, Georgia. Ruth retired from Sears & Roebuck after 20 years in the credit department. She was known for her love for people and her hospitality. Mrs. O’Neal was preceded in death by her husband Ralph J. O’Neal, son, Ronald Wells O’Neal, grandson, Craig Preston O’Neal, brother, J. C. Wells, and sisters, Irene Jones, Sarah Wread, Dot Pece, and Francis Harvey. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Terrie O’Neal, of Cleveland, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Carol Bryant O’Neal, of Cumming, Georgia; former daughter-in-law Alana Cuthbertson O’Neal , of Temple, GA; sisters, Winnie Lowrey, Evelyn Burry, and Charlotte Long; grandchildren, Michael and Gina O’Neal, and Kathryn and Paul Rapalee; two great grandchildren, Stephen Rapalee and Nichole Rapalee, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. Mrs. Jo D Carder, age 90, of Dahlonega went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her beloved family on Sunday, May 12, 2019.
Mrs. Carder was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on January 2, 1929 to the late William and Harriett Abercrombie McClure. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Nathaniel Carder and brother James A. McClure. Mrs. Carder was the oldest living member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. She was a strong and loving mother having raised up four daughters all in the same way. Mrs. Carder was affectionately called grandmother by her grandchildren. She loved living on the farm she grew up on.

Mrs. Georgia Mae Welch Spradley, age 82, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, May 5, 2019.
Mrs. Spradley was born in Suches, GA on July 18, 1936 to the late George W. and Rev. Lillie Mae Tow Self. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Clyde Spradley, her first husband Leon Welch, son Juddy Troy Welch, granddaughter Johanna Welch Burns, great-grandson Chris Burns, brothers and sisters-in-law Alvin and Faye Self, and Charlie and Susie Self, and brothers-in law Albert Parison and Harold Ash.
Georgia Mae was a member of Harmony Church of God in Suches, GA until she moved her membership to Dahlonega Church of God (The Torch) where she remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She served in various ministries of the church. Georgia Mae started and directed the youth choir and she was the adult choir director for many years. She was instrumental in starting the gospel singing at Gold Rush by having her choir sing as part of the Sunday activities.
Georgia Mae lived in Kentucky and West Virginia for a number of years when her first husband, Leon Welch, was the supervisor for building major highways in our country. She was fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mom to her three young boys. The mountains of north GA was always home for Georgia Mae. When she returned home her and her three boys worked together on the family farm. They always started early enough to leave time for fun the rest of the day. They loved to fish together and finding their own bait made it much more memorable.
After her boys were grown and with only an 8th Grade education, Georgia Mae decided to attend Real Estate School at Lanier Technical College. After receiving her real estate license, she established Georgia Gold Realty and she became a successful business woman. Georgia Mae was a broker, developer, and builder. She was hands-on and often used her own hands in the homes she developed. She loved and respected everyone that worked with her and for her.
All through her life Georgia Mae never lost her love for fishing. She would often leave work early, high-heels and all, to do a little fishing. Often, for a laugh, she told of fishing and chasing down a venomous snake and killing it with her high-heel shoes. Georgia Mae was a talented musician and she exposed her children to music and made sure it was a part of their lives.

Welch, Adrian Page, Brianna Bryant, Tristan Bryant, Chandler Welch, and Kylie Jo Welch; sisters Dorothy Parison and Lena Ash, both of Dahlonega; brother and sister-in-law Ted and Connie Carver Self, Dahlonega; brother Jerry Self, Cornelia; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

According to the University of Athletics Department, the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) named UNG junior pitcher, Kylee Smith, the Ron Lenz National Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday afternoon.
This is Smith’s second year earning the honor, and she is now the fourth North Georgia pitcher with this achievement and the second to do so within two consecutive seasons. This is the sixth time in 10m years that Dahlonega has had an athlete earn the award.

Smith is also the third pitcher in 13 years to earn it twice in a row; the last athlete was UNG’s Courtney Pool in 2015 and 2016. Smith was also named a D2CCA First Team All-American, her third straight honor, and she is a native of Suwanee, Georgia.
Smith finished the season with a 30-4 record and 0.73 ERA. She leads NCAA Division II in ERA and is second nationally in strikeouts (318) and hits allowed per game, third in wins, fourth in shutouts (12) and fifth in strikeouts per seven innings. She recorded four no-hitters during the year and threw a perfect game against USC Aiken on April 19.
In three seasons, Smith has quickly risen among the ranks of Peach Belt Conference all-time leaders. She is currently tied for third all-time in wins, is sixth in career strikeouts and eighth in career innings pitched.
Named the PBC Pitcher of the Week a record seven times this season, she was also named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week on April 3. She has been named the PBC Pitcher of the Week 14 times in her career.
