Willie B Cardin age 85 of Dahlonega passed away on October 14, 2018. She was of Baptist faith and loved sewing, having company over, and having a good laugh. She will be greatly missed.
Mrs Cardin is preceded by her parents Walter & Tilly (Bowls) Neely and her husband Hank Cardin.
Mrs Cardin is survived by Elizabeth Cardin, Art and Peggy Cardin, Lark Cardin, Horace Cardin, Melissa Cardin, William Cardin, Freddy Cardin (Thomas), Linda and Jason Dowdy, Amanda Mortan, Joseph Cardin, and Jeff Cardin. Grandchildren Daniel Cardin, Destany Murray, Christopher Dills, Hunter Cardin, and Micheal Cardin. Great grandchildren Adalyn & Briella Murray.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday October 17, 2018 from 10 am until 9pm.

Car accident in Lumpkin results in fatality

LUMPKIN CO., GA
A motor-vehicle accident at the intersection of Cleveland Highway and Copper Mines Road, on October 2, has resulted in a fatality, according to reports.
The two vehicle-crash included a black 2004 Toyota Tacoma and a gray 2012 Honda Pilot. The driver of the Tacoma was Austin Durham (19) of Cleveland, GA, and the driver of the Honda Pilot was Dawsonville resident, William Dorris (72). Audie Dorris (59) of Dawsonville, GA, was the right-seat passenger.
In a report released by Georgia State Patrol Sergeant, Casey Coffee, Durham was traveling west in the left eastbound lane of SR 115, and Dorris was traveling east in the left eastbound lane of SR 115, when Durham failed to maintain his lane of travel and was driving on the wrong side of the roadway. According to one source, Durham had fallen asleep while driving home from work when the front of his Tacoma struck Dorris’ Pilot; the area of impact was in the left eastbound lane of SR 115.
After impact, the Tacoma entered an uncontrolled, clockwise rotation, before coming to a stop partially in westbound and eastbound lanes of SR 115, while facing northeast. The Pilot rotated in an uncontrolled, counter-clockwise direction, while it exited the roadway and stopped facing northeast, partially in the westbound lane and north shoulder of SR 115.
Durham was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and will be charged with: Second Degree Vehicular Homicide, Failure to Maintain Lane, Driving on the Wrong Side of the Roadway, and for not wearing his seat belt.
According to eye witnesses, William and Audie Dorris were life-flighted to NEGMC for treatment of serious injuries; Audie Dorris passed away after arriving at the hospital. Both occupants were wearing their seatbelts.

UNG Basketball at Clayton State Postponed

Because of the cancellation, the next game for the Nighthawks will be on Saturday, January 20, against Georgia College as the fourth game in a row in Memorial Hall. Tip off for the women is set for 1:30 p.m., while the men’s game will start at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Scotty Ray Miles, age 52, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, December 5, 2019.
Scotty was born in Hall County on August 28, 1967. He was preceded in death by his wife Vivian Miles, step-son James Murphy, and his father Stephen Miles, Sr. Scotty attended Lumpkin County High School and was of the Baptist faith. He worked at B and M Metals and had volunteered for many years as a firefighter for Lumpkin County, Station 2. Scotty lived a quiet and peaceful life.
Survivors include his mother Vergie Miles, Dahlonega; brothers and sisters-in-law Chad and Loretta Miles, Dahlonega, and Steve and Mandi Miles, North Carolina; step-son Jeffery Miles, California; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Memorial services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday, December 8, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Ricky Stone and Mr. Joe Lanier will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to the hour of the service Sunday at the funeral home.

Larry James Robinson: Obituary

Mr. Larry James Robinson, age 65, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019.
Larry was born in White County on October 23, 1953 to the late J.C. and Zora Hester Robinson. He was retired after many years of dedicated service to Windstream. Larry enjoyed life to the fullest. He would often say “Find something you love to do and do it”. Larry was loving life and riding his motorcycle with his son, who is his best friend, on Sunday when the Lord called Larry home. He was enjoying retired life and all that comes with it from riding his motorcycle to fishing. Larry deeply adored and was greatly loved by his great-nephews and niece.
Survivors include his wife Jan Robinson, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law Josh and Ashley Robinson, Dahlonega; brother Bobby Robinson, Dahlonega; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jerry and Penny Lunsford, Dahlonega; father-in-law Waldo Lunsford, Dahlonega; nephews Robby Robinson (Christina), Cleveland, and Clint and Lyndsey Freeland, Dahlonega; niece Laura Lunsford, Dahlonega; special great-nephews Jack Freeland and Rhett Freeland; and special great-niece Evy Freeland.
Memorial services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Phillip Robinson and the Rev. Danny Jarrard will officiate. Dusty Kaylor Popko, age 43 of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away peacefully Friday, August 16, 2019. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 18, 2019 at Harvest Baptist Church from 2 to 4PM with a service following at 4PM. Rev. Mark Biddy will officiate. Interment will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Dusty is survived by her husband Ben Popko; sons Logan Popko, Bricen Popko, Micah Popko, all of Dahlonega, Georgia; mother Kathy Burger Kaylor, of Blue Ridge, Georgia; father and his wife Rusty and Victoria Kaylor, of Dahlonega, Georgia; sister and brother-in-law Kimberley and John David Hyde, of Blue Ridge, Georgia: She is survived by Nieces who were like daughters Kelley Kaylor and Emily (Heath) Giddy, and Nephew Caleb Hyde. Dusty was known for her amazing love for God. She fought a long battle and praised God until her final breath. She brought laughter whenever she entered the room, and was known for her random singing, her amazing artistic abilities, and love of traveling. Dusty loved her family and had many friends. She loved spending time at Hobby Lobby exploring her next craft project. She, along with her friend Karen, loved face painting at local craft shows and festivals. A great passion of hers was her church family, mentoring the youth, and the performances of the annual Easter and Christmas Plays. Her family and her loved to prepare Gourmet Meals at Home. Award-winning pub gears up for annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser

Shenanigans Irish Pub, located right off the historic Dahlonega square, is getting ready for their annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser with some beneficial renovations.

The owner, Deb Rowe, told FYN that the most significant changes made to the pub were enclosing the patio, protecting their outside courtyard from water drainage from the street, and adding new ramps, making the entire patio and courtyard wheelchair accessible. Rowe explained how the community will benefit from the new improvements, “Now, everyone can get from the courtyard, to the deck and to the patio; the courtyard is all accessible.”

The renovations have taken place just weeks before their upcoming 11th annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser event, which Rowe started as a way to raise money for research on Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cystic Fibrosis. The weekend-long event includes a silent auction and fresh Florida oysters that are shucked on-site. Rowe revealed that this year they are extending the event space into their parking lot, giving them an additional 40×40 square feet of room.
Rowe also explained that during the first year of the fundraiser, they raised $6400, which has grown to $40,000 ten years later, “Originally, the first few years we were raising $6,000 to $8,000, and it was just for Muscular Dystrophy. Then my sister was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and even though Cystic Fibrosis is relatively rare, I know several people who have it.” In 2018, Shenanigans earned the Community Involvement Award from the Georgia chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for their contributions resulting from Shucking for Shamrocks.

The event will be from August 31 until September 2, and community members are encouraged to sign up to volunteer for the event, “Above and beyond making donations to the silent auction and spending money at the event, we have an inter-active volunteer sign-up link [on their Facebook page]. We really just need additional bodies to help.”
Patricia Ann Cox: Obituary

Mrs. Patricia Ann Cox, age 87, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019.
Mrs. Cox was born in London, England on November 20, 1931 to the late Kenneth and Eileen Beatrice Bowles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son Jeffery W. Cox who passed away in 2010. Mrs. Cox loved living in Dahlonega, especially her home surrounded by all the beautiful trees. She moved to Canada because of the housing shortage in London after the blitz and lived there for six years until she moved to the United States in 1963. Mrs. Cox became a US citizen in 1973. She worked as a draft person in London and she was an accomplished artist and poet.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years Maurice W. Cox, Dahlonega and her three beloved dogs. Mrs. Cox was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Goldin C. Woody, Age 78. Senior Chief Petty Officer, US Navy (Ret).
Departed this earth on June 11th 2019, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. In his last days, he was surrounded by his loving family and grandchildren, which were the pride and joy of his life.
Mr. Woody was born and raised in Lumpkin County, GA. While in high school in 1957, he joined the US Army Reserves and then entered the US Navy in 1959, retiring in 1977. After his military service, he was employed at Scientific-Atlanta Inc. He held degrees in in Industrial Engineering and Business Administration, retiring in 1997 as a Senior Quality Engineer with certifications as Certified Welding Inspector (American Welding Society) and Certified Quality Engineer (American Society for Quality Control).
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Drucilla J. Woody, six children and their spouses: Gordon & Karen Woody (Dahlonega GA), James & Rosa Woody (Rio Grande Costa Rica), Elizabeth & Arthur Brown (Dawsonville GA), Dr. Paul C. Woody, D.O. (Dahlonega GA), Michael & Natalie Woody (Venice FL), and John & Jarka Woody (Round Rock TX). Also among his surviving family are 17 grandchildren.
Mr. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Hunt R. Woody Sr. and Grace Marie Goldin Woody, brothers Rogers and Wayne Woody and their grandson Tyler A. Woody. He was the grandson of Gover Cleveland Goldin and Mae Jemima McBrayer and Willis Rabun Woody and Adalizer Rogers.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick Connaro, M.D. for his expert medical advice and services. Also appreciation to Dr. Ronald Steis and Barbara Burke, PA, of Atlanta Cancer Center, and for the love and care provided by Homestead Hospice.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 13th from 5:30 pm -8:00 pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 14th, at 4:00pm at St. Luke Catholic Church in Dahlonega. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega.

Dr. Damaris Moore Corrigan, 58, passed away on 28 May 2019 after a 25-year battle with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). The granddaughter of Chester A. ‘Ted’ and Pauline Bell and daughter of Nicky R. and Maurice Moore of Opelika, Alabama, Damaris was a graduate of Opelika High School in Alabama. She went on to take her B.A. from Newcomb College in New Orleans, Summa Cum Laude, in 1983, Honours from St. Andrews University, Scotland (Latin), J.D. Tulane School of Law (Legal History), M.A. Tulane University (Classics), Ph.D. University of Texas-Austin (Classics) before accepting a position as professor of Latin, Ancient Greek, Roman Law and Ancient Military History at the University of Georgia, Athens, Department of Classics. She studied under some of the world’s leading thinkers and educators, spoke Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian, German, and French and was the author of a book, Riders on High: The Cavalry of Alexander the Great, as well as several journal articles. An accomplished and exceptionally knowledgeable horse woman and equestrienne, Damaris won many Western riding competitions and was a lifelong member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Foundation Quarter Horse Association. Her finest personal accomplishment may have been her marriage, which began 6 August 1986, for she and her husband were inseparable, devoted, content and, owing to her life-threatening disease, lived every day to the fullest. They truly lived as ‘happily ever after’ as the good Lord allows. Dedicated to a life of learning, Damaris traveled extensively with him through the United Kingdom and Italy, where she leaves many friends, and made a second home of Windsor, England. Her friends and family will remember her as an extraordinarily intelligent woman whose profound knowledge and phenomenal memory was equaled by her quiet kindness, extraordinary wit and sense of humor, and unfailing consideration of others. She lived every day up to her personal code of honesty and integrity and was truly incapable of telling a falsehood or bracing a lie. She practiced the art of compassionate and diplomatic silence better than anyone. In short, she knew the secret of a happy life, shared it with a loving husband and earned his admiration, pride, and love with every precious breath she took. She leaves behind countless students bettered by her skill and dedication, a wealth of friends, two beloved brothers, Jeff and Peter Moore, their wives who were like her own sisters, Wanda and Joan Moore, three cherished nieces, Victoria Spates (Paul), Tiffany Sanders (Jason), and Taylor Moore, and a sister as well as a father- and mother-in-law whom she loved as her own parents, Sheldon and Constance Bernstein of Leawood, Kansas, and her husband of thirty-three years, Dr. Brian Jay Corrigan, who is her soul mate for whom another thirty-three years would have still been all-too-short a time to spend in her extraordinary, admirable and deeply loved company. Her ashes will reside at her home until her husband can join her, at which time they will be scattered together at their home in England.

Mrs. Betty Morgan Kelley, age 83, of Dahlonega, formerly of Cave City, AR., went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her beloved family on Saturday, June 1, 2019.
Betty was born on September 26, 1935, to Ray and Ione Morgan. After her marriage to Sid Kelley in January 1953, they moved to Coloma, Michigan, where they lived until returning to Cave City in 1965. She resided in Cave City until 2012 when she moved to Dahlonega, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Sidney (Sid) Kelley and brothers, Junior and Wilson Morgan and her sister, Mary Morgan Jones. Betty was a member of First Baptist Church of Cave City. She was a strong and loving mother having raised up four children after the death of her husband. Betty was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved cooking for friends and family. Betty also loved working outdoors, enjoying the things of nature, and drawing.
Survivors include her son, Stan (Sally) Kelley of Dahlonega, Georgia, daughters Fran (Paul) Matthews of Cave City, Sharon (Doug) Davis of Searcy, AR, and Lisa (Greg) Crabtree, also of Cave City. Betty’s grandchildren are Brandi (Mark) Turner of Cleveland, GA, Lindsey (Hank) Haynes of Dahlonega, GA, Matthew Kelley of Salisbury, NC, Josh (Amy) Matthews of Cave City, AR, Zach Hunter of Toronto, Canada, and Rachel (Colton) Dunbar of Jonesboro, AR. Great-grandchildren include Logan and Cooper Turner of Cleveland, GA, Sarah Grayce and Rhett Haynes of Dahlonega, GA, Samuel and Kate Matthews of Cave City, AR. Betty was also survived by her brother, Ted Morgan of Sitka, AR.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at the Qualls Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City with funeral services immediately following at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Betty’s son, Stan Kelley, will officiate the service. Interment will follow in the Parsley Cemetery.

Barbara (Joan) Mitts Chancey–our “Granny” and to her beloved friends, warmly “Barb” daughter of the late Lloyd and Olive (Johnson) Mitts of Pennsylvania was born in Connellsville, PA on September 23, 1942. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Suches, GA. She has lived in Suches, GA for the last 19 years and Jupiter, FL for 40+ years prior. Barb was a talented cosmetologist, serving clients/friends in Florida and Georgia for over 30 years. She touched many lives through her love of people and hairdressing. She was a graduate of the Legal Career Institute in West Palm Beach, FL and worked as a paralegal for nearly 10 years before her retirement. She was devoted to family, and played a very important role in raising all four of her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, shopping, travel, music, and time with family. She peacefully left this temporary home to join her Heavenly Father on March 5, 2019 following a swift and valiant battle with Leukemia.
Granny’s warmth, humor, kindness, tenderness, strength, loyalty, and fiery spirit will be fondly remembered by all blessed to know and love her. Her legacy of love and light will be carried on through her son Lawrence A. Chancey, Sr. of Suches, GA, her grandsons Christopher Chancey of Suches, GA, Lawrence A. Chancey, Jr. of Cleveland, GA, Matthew A. McCutcheon and wife Sarah McCutcheon of Cleveland, GA, her granddaughter Amanda L. Bales and husband Cory Bales of Yulee, FL and her 6 great grandchildren: Champ and Ansley McCutcheon, and Lindsay, Madison, Sam, & Lily Bales, as well as her siblings Ronald Mitts of PA, and Jeannie Woodfin of FL, and her nieces and nephews as well.
A viewing service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m at Dahlonega Funeral Home 20 Gibson Rd. Dahlonega, GA 30533.
