Lumpkin County celebrated its annual lighting of the Downtown Square on Friday, November 23, with preformances by the local elementary schools, carriage rides, and even a visit from Santa and Mrs. Clause.
Blackburn Elementary School Drama Club
The festivities kicked off with a performance from the Blackburn Elementary School Drama Club, featuring classic Christmas favorites sang by students and led by art teacher, Karen Harwood. Meanwhile, patrons had the opportunity to enjoy a cozy carriage ride around the historic square as well as have their photos taken with Santa.
For Dahlonega native, Chase Samples, the event was the perfect opportunity for him to propose to his girlfriend, Erika Worley. Worley told Fetch that she was completely surprised by the romantic moment, and when he got down on one knee,

The Dahlonega/Lumpkin County annual Christmas ornament was also revealed during the lighting celebrations, and other limited edition Christmas ornaments were available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the Community Helping Place.

UNG women’s basketball team announced as Peach Belt Conference winners

The Nighthawks claimed all possible first place votes to earn a maximum point total of 121 in the poll. Columbus State was second in the voting with Lander third and a tie for fourth between Flagler and Francis Marion. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
UNG claimed their second-ever PBC regular season championship and their first PBC Tournament title in 2017-18. UNG also made their second NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the round of 16 and the regional championship game. The Nighthawks will return three of their top four scorers from last year’s team including All-Conference senior guards Amber Skidgel and Vanessa Agrusa. Also returning is 2017-18 PBC Freshman of the Year Abbie Franklin.
LCSO hosts upcoming fifth annual gun show to support youth homes

Lumpkin County Sheriff, Stacy Jarrard, and the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office is hosting their fifth annual Sheriff’s Gun Show on Saturday, October 27, from 9am to 5pm, through Sunday, October 28 from 10am to 4pm. The event will be held in Dahlonega at 154 Ethan Allen Drive, behind Chestatee Ford on Georgia 400, off Lumpkin County Parkway.
All proceeds from the gun show will benefit the Georgia Sheriff Youth Homes, which was created in the late 1950’s, according to Jarrard, “We got our first child in 1960. There are five houses located throughout the state of Georgia that we have at around 70 kids in, at this time.” The Youth Homes can house about 100 children throughout the state, and they are sustained by only the donations from the public.
Jarrard explained that, “That’s how they’re successful…I would like us to raise as much money as we can this year, to be able to support these youth homes, and to be able to support children in these youth homes. I look forward to seeing you.” The entry fee will be $5.00, and admission is free for kids 12 and under.

Greg Murray named Lumpkin County System Teacher of the Year

Lumpkin County Middle School teacher, Greg Murray, was named System Teacher of the Year during the Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 8.
Murray teaches 8th grade Social Studies at LCMS and is the current department chair. According to LCMS principle, Matt Remillard, “When you look to see what a model teacher would be like, it’s an example of Mr. Murray.” Remillard went on to explain that Murray excels at creating lessons that “actively engage students,” and he is constantly researching new and creative ways to keep students engaged in learning, “In my opinion, if the kids are engaged, they’re learning.”

After being named LCMS Teacher of the Year, Lumpkin County School System’s Selection Committee selected Murray as the System Teacher of the Year for 2020. The teachers who were selected for individual Teachers of the Year include: Cynthia Williamson for LCHS, Paige Gooch for LBES, Greg Murray for LCMS, Amanda Barton for LCES, and April Bowen for BES.

UNG women’s soccer team defeats Limestone 3-1

The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team remains undefeated against Limestone after walking away with a 3-1 victory over the Saints Wednesday.
Three minutes after Limestone tied the game in the first half, freshman Abbie Crane blasted a shot into the net to take the lead. The Nighthawks struck first in the 13th minute when Dani Shartouny intercepted a low goal kick and took it herself to goal, taking the early lead. Limestone brought it back to even in the 25th minute on Megan O’Conner’s fifth goal of the young season.
Right after the Saint goal, Crane checked in and, three minutes later, found the net off a rebounded shot, giving the Nighthawks a 2-1 lead headed to halftime.
The Nighthawks found insurance in the 84th minute when Taylor Malasek finished off a counter started by Shartouny to push UNG to their third win of the season.

UNG women’s golf tops leaderboard after Full Moon BBQ Invitational

Megan Sabol carded a one-under 71 as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team leads the Full Moon BBQ Invitational after the opening round Monday at Timberline Golf Club.
The Nighthawks shot a 302 in the opening round to lead No. 25 West Georgia by a single stroke. Montevallo is in third, finishing 10 strokes behind UNG, while West Florida and Christian Brothers sit in a tie for fourth.
Sabol started off the day with a birdie on the par-3 16th. She also birdied the par-5 11th hole to get back to one-under after a bogey earlier in the round. The junior is in second individually, two strokes behind West Georgia’s Franziska Bremm.
Rounding out the scoring four for the Nighthawks were Carson Roberts (+5), Jordyn Sims (+7) and Karson Stone (+7). Roberts is in a tie for sixth place, while Sims and Stone are in a tie for 12th. Alexis Whitney, playing as an individual, shot six-over to sit in a tie for ninth individually.
The final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning as the teams will have a shotgun start.

University of North Georgia announces men’s basketball schedule

The University of North Georgia Athletic Communications department has released the 2018-2019 men’s basketball schedule. Head University of North Georgia men’s basketball coach Chris Faulkner has announced the 2018-19 schedule of contests that includes a nationally televised game on January 9, 2019, against Columbus State in the UNG Convocation Center.
The season gets started with three straight home games, beginning with an exhibition matchup against Emory on November 4. The regular season gets going on November 9 as the Nighthawks host the Peach Belt / Conference Carolinas Challenge with matchups against North Greenville and Erskine.
After a quick trip to Lee, the Nighthawks return home for two more home games against Southern Wesleyan (November 17) and West Georgia (November 20.)
Peach Belt play starts on December 1 as UNG travels to Francis Marion before the final non-conference game of the year on the road at Emmanuel. After finals, the Nighthawks will have four out of five at home in league play, including the matchup with Columbus State on ESPN3.
North Georgia will finish the regular season with five home games out of the last seven, starting with Spirit Night on February 13 against Young Harris.

Lumpkin County Board of Education announces called meeting for August 24

11 days after they voted on the current millage rate, which will result in a property tax increase, the Lumpkin County Board of Education announced that they will hold a called meeting on August 24. The announcement came after local media and local citizens questioned the integrity behind previous public hearings that involved the millage rate vote.
According to their Facebook page, the purpose of the meeting is to, “hear community feedback regarding millage rates, school system budgets, and school finance.” They also stated that, “all community members are encouraged to attend and to provide feedback or ask questions.If you are unable to attend, but wish to provide feedback, please email our school board members.”
In a separate post on social media, Superintendient, Dr. Robert Brown, released the following statement, “It is ridiculous for anyone to suggest that our school board is not welcoming of public input or attempted to avoid feedback provided at the millage hearings. Our school board members receive phone calls and emails from concerns and supportive citizens on a regular basis. They welcome and seek feedback from a variety of sourced in our community, all in an effort to continue providing a premier education for all students in Lumpkin County.” However, according to a local Dahlonega resident, several attempts at contacting members of the board and the superintendent were all left unanswered.
FYN also called and emailed each board member, as well as the superintendent, but did not receive a response.
The meeting will be held at the Lumpkin County Central Office at 6pm.
Fatal car accident on North Bear Whelchel Road in Lumpkin County

According to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, all Southbound lanes on GA 400 near Whelchel Road are closed, due to a single-vehicle accident involving a 1997 Toyota 4Runner, which resulted in two fatalities; a male, age 2 and female, age 4. The wreck occurred on Wednesday evening, August 22.
The children were announced deceased on the scene, as a result of the roll-over accident. The mother, who had recently relocated to Dahlonega, was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, and the father was notified soon after. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol, and according to Cpl. J.A. Caldwell, charges are pending until the investigation is complete.
UPDATE: According to an open records arrest report from Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, Tiffany Grubb, (24), was arrested on August 23, and charged with, so far: reckless driving, (misdemeanor), two counts of DUI-Endangering Child Under 14-years-old while DUI (misdemeanor), failure to maintain lane (misdemeanor), two counts of safety belts; child passenger restraining system; penalty for violation (misdemeanor), an unspecified warrant, and DUI/alcohol/Less Safe (misdemeanor), driving with a suspended or revoked license (misdemeanor). According to an eye witness, one of the two car seats was located in the trunk of Grubb’s vehicle and was not being used, and the other car seat was not being used properly.
In a statement released by Georgia State Patrol Public Information Office, on Aug. 22, at approximately 8:20 p.m., a 1997 Toyota 4Runner was involved in a crash on SR 400 at Whelchel Road in Lumpkin County. The driver, Tiffany Grubb, age 24 of West Palm Beach, FL, failed to maintain her lane of travel and overturned several times. Her two children, Jah’Ziya Glover, age 4 and De’Jean Glover, age 2, were killed in the crash. Ms. Grubb was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide (1st degree), Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, two counts of endangering a child under 14 while DUI, Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane and Driving while Suspended.Updates will be provided as soon as they are received.

Men’s basketball comes up short in Gainesville

The atmosphere was electric for the basketball season opener at Chestatee High School on Tuesday night. Unfortunately that spark fizzled out for the Lumpkin County Men’s basketball team, who found themselves playing catch up to the War Eagles in the fourth period.
The War Eagles ultimately edged past the Indians 74-68, with Brenton Nicholson sinking eight three point shots throughout the game. Two of those were early in the fourth period to give the War Eagles a lead they refused to relinquish.
Lumpkin County’s Pat Jackson led the way in points for the Indians with twenty overall, as well as five assists. Peyton Polk and Jacob Cumbie contributed seventeen points each, and Gus Faulkner put up eleven.
The Men’s basketball team will be on the road again Friday night against rival White County. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m.

Lady Indians defeat Pickens Dragonettes 4-3 in home opener

Until the bottom of the fifth inning, it looked as though the Pickens Dragonettes softball team was going to walk away with a win at the Lumpkin County Lady Indians home opener.
But as with all great games you have to stay until the very end. After Lauren English hit a double for the Lady Indians to bring in two runners, the score was tied up and the game shifted in Lumpkin County’s favor.
A pop up to right field by Nettes #21 Kayla Lubke brought in a runner and put the Nettes on the board first.
The Dragonettes started strong with a single in the top of the first by Sarah Morris. The next couple of innings were solid defensively for the Nettes and starting pitcher Emma Black. A pop up to right field by Kayla Lubke brought in Chloe McPherson, and the Nettes were the first on the board.
The Lady Indians struggled through the top of the fourth, as starting pitcher Natalie Robinson walked five runners. The Nettes left the inning with a 3-0 lead, and Robinson came out after pitching 3 2/3 innings. Emmy Graham finished out the inning for the Lady Indians, and the team came back out to bat ready to close the gap.

After the double by English in the bottom of the fifth, Robinson followed with a double of her own to lift the Lady Indians over the Nettes 4-3.
“[I] challenged the girls last week after our opener and yesterday after practice to just play hard and don’t let our emotions take control of us,” said Lady Indians head coach Joseph Jones. “Be a good teammate, and if we screw up it’s fine, show some resilience.”
The Lady Indians are now 1-1 in the season.
Pre-season football follow-up interview with Indians new head coach Caleb Sorrells

It’s a new season, and for the Lumpkin County Indians it’s a new beginning under the direction of head coach Caleb Sorrells. But even with the recent hire of Sorrells in May, the team has had no problem buying in.
“There’s two ways that it can go when a new coach takes over and most of it has to do with how the seniors buy in,” said Sorrells. “To their credit they said, ‘Coach, we’re in!’ and they have been in since day one and truly it’s been great.”
Sorrells coached previously at Stephens County High, along with Cartersville High in offensive coaching positions.
Sorrells said about the coaches he has worked and played under, “I’m just trying to live up to a really, really great legacy that I’ve been able to watch and hopefully mold myself after.”
