Nettles earns third straight Athlete of the Month

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of North Georgia junior Kimberlee Nettles earned the Southern Conference Smallbore Athlete of the Month Award for the month of January, the league office announced Tuesday morning.

Nettles led the No. 20 Nighthawks once again in smallbore during the month of January. The Waycross, Georgia, native opened the month by shooting a 577 on January 19 against No. 10 Alaska Fairbanks and Georgia Southern. Nettles led the team and finished third out of 16 competitors in smallbore. She improved on her previous score by shooting 578 at an eight-team event at Murray State on January 24 that included several ranked squads, headlined by No. 3 Kentucky. Nettles once again led the team and finished 19th overall in smallbore.

Nettles was the Smallbore Athlete of the Month in October and the Air Rifle Athlete of the Month in November.

The Nighthawks head back to the range on Saturday, February 8, in the Georgia State Championships against Georgia Southern and Georgia Military.

UNG closes out Gulf Shores tourney with twin wins

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The No. 16 University of North Georgia softball team wrapped up the opening weekend of play with two wins at the Gulf Shores Invitational, defeating West Alabama, 8-3, before downing Mississippi College, 3-0, Sunday.

GAME ONE
West Alabama jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring on back-to-back RBI base hits in the third inning. UNG responded in the bottom half of the frame with seven runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Hannah Forehand.

Two innings later, North Georgia added an eighth run on a Shelby Hammontree RBI single, scoring Kaylyn Anthony. UWA scratched a run across in the seventh on a RBI single with the bases loaded.

Anthony finished the game 3-for-4, while Mariah Wicker went 2-for-3 out of the two hole. Hammontree, Olivia Sinquefield and Cheyanne Mosteller each also had multi-hit games.

Abbie Crawford (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing four innings of four hit softball, striking out five.

GAME TWO
The Nighthawks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a Jenna Goodrich two-run blast in the top half of the first inning, scoring Anthony who led off the inning with a single.

North Georgia loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but they were only able to get one run out of it off a Mosteller sacrifice fly that plated Janie Henderson.
Kylee Smith (2-0) pitched the complete game, striking out 14 batters along the way.

UNG baseball sweeps Auburn Montgomery

DAHLONEGA – The No. 20 University of North Georgia baseball team scored 16 unanswered runs as they finished off the season-opening sweep of Auburn Montgomery, 16-3, Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium at Cottrell Park.

The Warhawks got started quickly with a first inning three run homer by Corey Armstrong, but from that point, UNG started chipping away. The Nighthawks scored single runs in each of the first three innings before exploding with a seven run fourth, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame.

Leading 10-3, the Nighthawks didn’t take their foot off the gas, scoring again in the fifth off a Crews Taylor two-run shot to left center. UNG scored four more in the sixth inning, led by a Jake Howard two-RBI double to score the first two of the inning.

NOTES

– Howard finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Brady Eeles went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
– This is the third year out of the last five that UNG has swept its season-opening opponent.
– UNG has scored double digit runs in three straight games for the first time since the 2017 season when North Georgia scored double digits against Emmanuel in the final two games of the series before a double-digit performance against Georgia Southwestern in the opening game of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
– Parker Morrison (1-0) was the winning pitcher, striking out five across five innings.

UNG wins baseball season opener, 12-5

DAHLONEGA – A six-run second inning was ultimately the difference as the No. 20 University of North Georgia baseball team put up 12 runs in a season opening 12-5 win over Auburn Montgomery Friday night at Bob Stein Stadium at Cottrell Park.

The Nighthawks loaded the bases immediately in the bottom of the second inning and used a Crews Taylor walk, a Tim Conway RBI single, a Bill LeRoy RBI double and a Nik Levensteins RBI single to put up the six spot. AUM responded in the next frame, though, with four runs of their own, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple and a solo homer.

After two scoreless innings passed, William Mapes got things rolling again with a two-run bomb of his own over the left field fence to push the lead back up to 8-4. From there, North Georgia piled on the runs, scoring three in the seventh and another in the eighth. The Warhawks added an unearned run in the ninth to bring the game to its final.

NOTES
– LeRoy had the best night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Mapes, Will Hardigree and Jake Arnold all also had multi-hit games.

– Dating back to last season, LeRoy is now on a nine-game hitting streak.

– Cade Heil (1-0) was tabbed with the win, going six strong and striking out five.

North Georgia and AUM will battle again tomorrow at 3 p.m. The game time has been moved back two hours after the game Friday was moved back due to weather.

UNG women rally to beat Clayton State, 68-60

DAHLONEGA – A 10-0 run over the final 3:12 pushed the No. 14 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team past Clayton State in come-from-behind fashion, 68-60, Saturday afternoon inside the UNG Convocation Center.

Clayton State jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead before North Georgia answered with a 15-4 run of their own to take their first lead at 20-18 early in the second quarter. The Lakers would then score the next seven points to take the lead, one that they would hold on to until halftime.

In the second half, Clayton State got their lead to as many as eight in the third quarter, but the Nighthawks answered with a 12-0 run to retake the lead early in the fourth quarter. The two teams went back-and-forth, but the final 10-0 run was enough to give UNG the win.

NOTES

– After giving up nine offensive boards in the first half, UNG gave up just two in the second half.

– Julianne Sutton led all scorers with a season-high 25 points to go with 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. She has now scored double figures in 22 straight games dating back to the NCAA opening round game a year ago.

– Abbie Franklin added 17 points, playing 39 minutes in the contest.

– UNG is now 27-1 inside the Convocation Center, winning 22 straight.

DAHLONEGA – Every University of North Georgia men’s basketball player that saw the floor scored as the Nighthawks pushed past Clayton State Saturday, 77-63, in the UNG Convocation Center.

Clayton State and the Nighthawks went back-and-forth in the first eight minutes of the game before the Lakers pulled away slightly, holding the lead for over 11 minutes in the middle of the first half. With the score at 32-27 in favor of Clayton State with under four to play in the opening stanza, UNG finished the first half on a 12-3 run to take a slight lead headed to halftime.

North Georgia gave up the lead just twice in the second half, both times falling behind by a single possession. The Nighthawks used a 9-0 run in the middle of the second half to put Clayton State away.

NOTES
– Zez Steeple led North Georgia in the scoring column with 15 points off the bench, while KJ Jenkins added 14. Ephraim Tshimanga put up 12 and Lanre Olatunji contributed 10 in 14 minutes of action.
– Ricardo Saams, Jr. led all scorers with 24 points while Bryan Hart added 23 for the Lakers.
– The Nighthawks got 47 points off the bench compared to just three for CSU.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – After winning the regular season championship for the third time in five years in 2019, the University of North Georgia baseball team was picked to win the league in the preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced Friday morning.

The Nighthawks captured eight of a possible 11 first-place votes and 117 total points to come in ahead of second-place Columbus State. Young Harris was third in the voting with USC Aiken and Georgia College tied for fourth.
North Georgia takes the top spot in the preseason poll for the second time in their PBC history, the first coming in 2016. Four different PBC teams received first-place votes in this year’s poll with Columbus State taking one, Young Harris two and Flagler one.

The Nighthawks finished with a 33-20 overall record and 19-11 mark in league play. UNG brings back five seniors for 2020 including first-team All-Conference pitcher Steven Bower and second baseman Bill LeRoy, who was named to the preseason All-Conference team earlier this week. 12 juniors will also fill out the roster Crews Taylor, who was named preseason All-Conference, and reliever Parker Morrison who was a second-team All-Conference selection last year.

Coaches were not permitted to rank their own team.

Davenport inducted into softball Hall of Fame

ATLANTA – University of North Georgia head softball coach Mike Davenport was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club Softball Hall of Fame at the GADC Softball Coaches Clinic Awards Ceremony this past weekend.

“Coach Davenport’s induction into the Georgia Dugout Club Softball Coaches Hall of Fame is a well-deserved and long overdue honor,” stated UNG athletic director Lindsay Reeves. “Coach Davenport has built the nation’s premier NCAA Division II softball program here at UNG and he has done it in a first-class manner.”

Davenport currently sports an 860-230 head coaching record, all of which have been at North Georgia. In his 20th year at the helm of the softball program, Davenport has led the Nighthawks to nine Peach Belt regular season and tournament championships, including six straight, as well as 12 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances that includes the 2015 DII National Championship.

Prior to joining the NCAA Division II ranks, Davenport guided North Georgia to four conference championships and NAIA Regional apperances, including a trip to the NAIA Elite Eight in the final year of NAIA membership.

With the ever-changing level of competition and expanded emphasis on softball, the Atlanta Dugout Club became the Metro Atlanta Dugout Club, and today is the Georgia Dugout Club. This organization proudly represents some of the finest college and high school programs in the United States. Because of the intense participation of its membership, the state of Georgia is a hot bed for both collegiate and professional talent.

Tshimanga nets 22 in UNG win over Columbus State

DAHLONEGA – Josh Cottrell hit four three-pointers, and Ephraim Tshimanga earned his second double-double in as many games as the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team earned an 80-65 win over Columbus State Wednesday night.

Both teams started very slow offensively with the score being tied, 10-10, with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half. From there, the offense exploded, getting kickstarted by a Darnell Snyers three from the top of the key that gave UNG a small lead.

CSU answered by taking a six-point lead with just under six minutes to play until halftime. UNG responded with a 29-7 run to take a 15-point lead early in the second half, a lead that the Nighthawks would not relinquish the rest of the way.

NOTES
– The Nighthawks held Columbus State to just 40 percent from the floor while shooting nearly 54 percent themselves. UNG’s shooting performance included hitting 8-of-19 three pointers.

– Tshimanga finished with 22 points to go with 11 dimes. He also added eight rebounds, falling two short of a triple-double. Each of the last two games, the senior has been just shy of the triple-double due to rebounds.

– Also finishing in double figures for North Georgia were Bailey Minor (13), Cottrell (12) and Zach Brown (12).

No. 10 UNG women beat Georgia College, 65-48

DAHLONEGA – Julianne Sutton led all scorers with 21 points as the No. 10 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team led wire-to-wire to beat Georgia College, 65-47, Saturday afternoon.

The game was tied just once at 5-5 after UNG scored the first five points of the game followed by the Bobcats’ five points. North Georgia went on a 7-2 run to take a lead through to the second quarter. After extending the lead to as many as 17 points before halftime, the Nighthawks kept the lead in double figures despite being outscored in the third quarter.

North Georgia responded in the fourth quarter, putting up 19 points in the period to earn the sixth Peach Belt win of the season.

NOTES
– Sutton ended one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring in double figures for the 18th straight game. She has had double digit points in 32 of the last 33 games.

– Abbie Franklin scored 17 points, hitting five three pointers on six attempts. Chloe Savage added 14 points off the bench, while Kyra Davis contributed 10.

– The Nighthawks had 40 points in the paint while holding GC to just 18 points inside.

Cottrell, Steeple lead UNG past Georgia College

DAHLONEGA – Josh Cottrell and Zez Steeple each scored 17 points to lead all scorers as the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team defeated Georgia College, 90-80, to get back to .500 overall Saturday afternoon.

Georgia College took an early lead and stretched their lead to 10-6 before North Georgia went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good. The Nighthawks got the lead out to 69-43 with 7:30 to play before the Bobcats started scoring from beyond the arc.

The Bobcats went 8-for-12 from beyond the arc in the final 7:30 of the game, cutting the lead to as few as eight, but UNG had enough answers down the stretch to finish the game with the 10-point advantage.

NOTES
– Ephraim Tshimanga finished a rebound short of a triple-double, putting 11 points with 12 assists. Zach Brown was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor as he put up 14 points.

– North Georgia shot nearly 52 percent from the floor and held Georgia College to just 38 percent shooting.

– The Nighthawks had a +17 rebound margin. Carrod Watson led all rebounders with 11 boards.

Saints rout Nighthawks in Peach Belt Conference

DAHLONEGA – KJ Jenkins matched his career high 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team fell to Flagler in Peach Belt play, 90-68, Saturday afternoon.
North Georgia held as large as a six point lead in the first half, but Flagler hung around to get to a 21-21 tie with seven minutes to play in the opening half. The Saints then went on a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to pull away to as many as 19 early in the second half.
The Nighthawks answered in the middle portion of the second half, cutting the lead down to nine with just under eight minutes to play, but the Saints answered with a big run to stretch the lead to as many as 24 in the final moments of the game.
NOTES
Jenkins shot 5-for-13 from the floor, including 3-for-7 from distance. Zach Brown also finished with double digit points with 11.
Gedi Juozapaitis led all scorers with 33 points and nine rebounds, shooting 11-for-18 from the floor.
Flagler shot 19-of-27 in the second half on their way to a near 51 percent shooting performance on the night.

UNG Athletics receives $1 million donation For LED video boards

DAHLONEGA – Lynn Cottrell donated $1 million for LED video boards at the baseball, soccer and softball fields at the University of North Georgia’s Athletic Complex.

“This gift from Lynn Cottrell will significantly enhance our athletic complex and the experience of our student-athletes and fans,” UNG President Dr. Bonita Jacobs said. “The generosity of donors like Lynn and Mike Cottrell makes an incredible impact at UNG, and we are very grateful for their support.”

Baseball coach Tom Cantrell, softball coach Mike Davenport and men’s soccer head coach Patrice Parris joined Mike and Lynn Cottrell, Athletic Director Lindsay Reeves and Jacobs at Coleman Field House for a Nov. 22 signing ceremony announcing the gift.

In addition to serving as the new scoreboards, the new video boards will be capable of displaying multiple zones of content, allowing it to show one large image or to be divided into multiple zones to share live video, instant replays, statistics and game information, graphics, animations and sponsorship messages. UNG will become one of the region’s first Division II schools to feature digital video boards at all on-campus outdoor venues.

The baseball and softball scoreboards could be ready as early as the 2020 season.

Reeves is thankful for the Cottrell’s generosity to the Department of Athletics. “The generosity of the Cottrell family extends deep into the UNG campus and through the local Dahlonega community and will allow for an enhancement to our already first-class athletics facilities,” stated Reeves. “The addition of video boards at our outdoor venues will immediately elevate the gameday experience for our fans and student-athletes to the highest level and we are extremely grateful to the Cottrells for leading the way with this transformational gift.”

Davenport, whose program won the 2015 national title and has won six straight Peach Belt Conference championships, is thankful for the new scoreboards on the way.”We are blessed with some of the top facilities not only in Division II softball but the whole nation,” Davenport said. “With the gracious donation from Mike and Lynn Cottrell, this will be another huge improvement to our facility for our student-athletes and our fans while they watch the Nighthawks play.”

Parris said the digital scoreboards give UNG an advantage against its rivals.”Our facilities are a major recruitment tool for our program; having a video board allows us to continue to market the University of North Georgia at the national level,” Parris said. “It is truly a blessing and inspiration.”

Earlier this year, the Cottrells gave $10 million to help fund a new home for UNG’s Mike Cottrell College of Business. Groundbreaking is expected in 2020 on the Cottrell Center for Business, Technology and Innovation on UNG’s Dahlonega Cam

Sutton nets 21 as UNG women rout UNC Pembroke 59-45

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Julianne Sutton finished with a game-high 21 points as the No. 12 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team closed out 2019 with a 59-45 win on the road at UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon.

Abbie Franklin got things started with an opening possession three pointer, but the Braves would score the next five to take their only lead of the contest. From there, North Georgia went on a 13-0 run spanning the majority of the first quarter to put a sizable margin on the scoreboard.

The Nighthawk lead would get up to as many as 16 in the fourth quarter after the Braves cut the lead down to as few as six in the third before UNG pulled away for the win.

NOTES

Sutton now sits at 995 career points after her 21-point outing. She also has pulled down 486 rebounds over her two-and-a-half year career;
Franklin finished a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 12 points with nine rebounds;
All eight Nighthawks that saw action ended with points in the scoring column.

The 10-1 start to the season is the best since the 2016-17 season when UNG started 12-1.

UNG women’s soccer earns third seed in Southeast Regional

DAHLONEGA – The NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Committee announced the field of 56 teams for the 2019 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship, and the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team earned the No. 3 seed in the Southeast Region.

The Nighthawks will battle sixth-seeded Mount Olive on Friday at 3 p.m. in Hickory, North Carolina. The winner of that game will play the winner of second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne and seventh-seeded Wingate. The Bears, as the No. 2 seed, were awarding hosting rights for the opening rounds of the regional.

On the other side, top-seeded Flagler will welcome No. 4 Lincoln Memorial, No. 5 UNC Pembroke and No. 8 Catawba.

Mount Olive comes into the tournament with a 14-0-3 record, winning both the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament championships. UNG has won the only two matchups against the Trojans with the last matchup coming back in 2012, a 7-0 win for North Georgia.

No. 11 Nighthawks hold off No. 20 Carson-Newman 67-62

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — After trailing by four at the break, the No. 11 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team went on a 12-4 run to start the third quarter and made the lead hold up as they took down No. 20 Carson-Newman, 67-62, Saturday in the North Georgia Classic.

The Nighthawks and Eagles traded baskets through much of the first half with C-N pulling out in front late in the half. Neither team shot the ball well in the first two stanzas, shooting a combined 17-of-62 from the floor in the first 20 minutes.

The offense heated up though for UNG in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles by 11 in the frame and shooting 9-for-11 from the floor in the period. The lead was as many as 12 in the fourth quarter, but Carson-Newman did not go quietly, forcing North Georgia to make free throws late to clinch the win.

NOTES
– North Georgia was led by four players in double figures, including Abbie Franklin who finished with a team-high 19 points. Julianne Sutton added 17, Kara Groover contributed 12 and Kyra Davis had 10 in the win.

– C-N’s Kayla Marosites finished with a game-high 23 points after being held scoreless in the first half.

– The Nighthawks were outscored in every quarter but the third.

– In the other game of the classic Saturday, Life upset Clayton State, 61-60.
