Nettles Named SoCon Player of the Month For Air Rifle

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of North Georgia rifle shooter Kimberlee Nettles was named the SoCon Player of the Month for air rifle Thursday afternoon as announced by the league office.

Nettles finished no worse than fourth in any of her four October air rifle events, highlighted by shooting a personal-best 591 to finish first against Georgia Southern on Oct. 14. The Waycross, Georgia, native finished third with a score of 587 against No. 19 UT-Martin the following day before closing the month with consecutive 585s in a fourth-place showing against The Citadel and Georgia Southern on Oct. 21 and in a third-place finish against No. 17 Morehead State on Oct. 28.

Nettles averages a team-best 585.714 in air rifle this season, marking her as the best in the conference.

Others nominated for the monthly award were Selina Curren (UAB), Max Brabston (The Citadel) and Rosemary Kramer (Georgia Southern).

North Georgia will be back in action on Saturday, November 4, at VMI in Lexington, Virginia. The match is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.

Men’s Soccer Comeback Falls Just Short in 3-2 Loss, No. 3 Seed in PBC Tournament

DAHLONEGA – Trailing 3-0 in the first half, the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team battled back to make it a game but fell short in a 3-2 loss to North Greenville Saturday afternoon at a rainy UNG Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks finish the regular season at 8-7-0.

North Georgia will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Peach Belt Conference tournament and will play Tuesday in Dahlonega at the UNG Soccer Complex against USC Aiken.

The Crusaders scored in the 15th, 21st and 27th minutes to take a 3-0 lead before the Nighthawks started to fight back.

Alex Grant scored off a scrum in front of goal in the 32nd minute that cut the NGU lead to 3-1. Grant scored again just 90 seconds into the second half off a Gabriel Garcia free kick, but North Georgia could not get another shot past the Crusader keeper the rest of the match.

NOTES
– North Georgia held the Crusaders without a shot in the second half, outshooting them by a total of 16-8.

– North Greenville ties the all-time series with the Nighthawks at a match each with the win.

North Georgia will be the No. 3 seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament and will host the quarterfinal matchup against USC Aiken on Tuesday at the UNG Soccer Complex.

Women’s Soccer Named Co-PBC Regular Season Champions; No. 1 Seed in Tourney

AUGUSTA, Ga. – After Georgia College defeated No. 15 Columbus State, 2-1, Saturday afternoon, the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team claimed its first-ever Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. The Nighthawks will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PBC tournament starting Tuesday.

North Georgia finished the regular season at 11-3-2 and 8-2 in league play. UNG finished in a tie with Columbus State atop the PBC standings and both teams are regular-season co-champions. However, North Georgia defeated Columbus State, 3-2, in Columbus in September and take the top seed with the head-to-head win. UNG has been the No. 2 seed in the tournament each of the past three seasons.

The Nighthawks will open up the tournament against No. 8 seed USC Aiken on Tuesday in Dahlonega at the UNG Soccer Complex. UNG defeated the Pacers, 3-2, in come-from-behind fashion earlier this month.

Should UNG defeat USC Aiken Tuesday, they will travel to Evans, Georgia, and Blanchard Woods Park for the tournament semifinals, starting Friday morning.

Women’s Soccer Shuts Out No. 23 Limestone, 3-0

DAHLONEGA – Taylor Malasek netted two goals, including one just 2:08 into the contest, as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team shot past No. 23 Limestone, 3-0, Saturday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex. North Georgia improves to 7-3-2 in 2017 and 2-1 against top-25 teams.

Malasek scored the first goal off a long pass from Jessi Vaverka to put UNG up, 1-0, early. Both teams settled in for the remainder of the first half, but Renee VanHorn put home her eighth goal of the season in the 52nd minute on a header sent to the far post.

The freshman from Peachtree City, Georgia, got her second goal of the match when Rosie Embley sent a rolling pass across the front of the frame that sent the match to its final score.

NOTES
– North Georgia held the Saints to just two shots in the second half of play. Limestone averaged 20 shots per match coming in to the contest, but the Nighthawks held them to eight.

– Malasek is now tied for first in the Peach Belt in goals scored with three other players having scored nine goals this year.

– UNG has not allowed a goal against Limestone in the last three meetings, outscoring the Saints 9-0 in those matches.

The Nighthawks get a week off before jumping back into Peach Belt play on Saturday, October 14, at USC Aiken. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Young Harris Beats Men’s Soccer in Double Overtime, 2-1

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Matt Sharman made 12 saves in the match, but the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team was defeated by No. 19 Young Harris, 2-1, in double overtime Wednesday night at YHC’s Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Alex Grant scored the match’s first goal off a Carl Ludwig Eriksson corner kick in the sixth minute of play to put the Nighthawks up, 1-0. The score remained a goal advantage for UNG until the 73rd minute when Seba Andreassen leveled the match.

The North Georgia defense held strong against the constant pressure of Young Harris through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime period, but the Mountain Lions snuck one past off a corner kick by Macauley King, finding Carlos Gomez in the 104th minute to earn the golden goal victory.

NOTES
– Sharman’s 12 saves is tied for the third most in program history, tying Rade Tanaskovic’s 12-save performance against Lander exactly nine years ago.

– Tonight’s match was the third-straight meeting that the two sides have played to a one-goal difference.

SALEM, Va. – Three University of North Georgia softball players were honored as All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Wednesday evening at the awards banquet on the eve of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship at the Sheraton Airport in Roanoke. Earlier today, the same trio collected All-American honors by the D2CCA. Kylee Smith and Stephanie Hartness were honored as first team All-Americans, while Sydney Sprague garnered second team honors.

In the D2CCA All-American list, all three Nighthawks were named second team All-Americans.

In the D2CCA honors, North Georgia and Southern Arkansas tied for the most honorees with three each, while UNG’s 16 All-Americans since 2007 is the most in the country.

This is the 11th season of the D2CCA All-America program which is selected by CoSIDA members from schools playing in NCAA Division II and second in which the program was solely sponsored by the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association.

North Georgia’s 2017 season came to an end last week at the Super Regional following a 48-13 overall mark and four consecutive Peach Belt Conference regular season and tournament championships.

Michael Gouge Named NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American

DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia baseball player Michael Gouge became the ninth All-American in program history as the senior was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America team on Wednesday.

Harris was an honorable mention honoree as an outfielder.

Gouge was solid all season hitting .379 with 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 60 RBI while getting on base at a .527 lick, fifth best in Division II.

The All-American honor is added to his long list of honors this season including first team All-Region selections from both the American Baseball Coaches Association and the NCBWA as well as first team All-Conference honors from the Peach Belt Conference.

Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport.

No. 2 Nighthawks Knocked Out of PBC Tournament After Splitting Two Games

FLORENCE, S.C. – The second-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team battled to the end, but was eliminated from the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday evening with a 7-6 loss to Georgia College at Francis Marion’s Sparrow Stadium. The Nighthawks advanced to the semifinal round earlier in the day with a 4-1 win over Georgia Southwestern.

Daniel McCrary pitched a complete-game two-hitter as the Nighthawks beat Georgia Southwestern for the second time in as many days.

McCrary finished the game in 130 pitches, collecting five strikeouts and walking two. The junior lefty improved to 10-1 with the win.

He becomes the first North Georgia NCAA-era pitcher to collect double figure wins.

North Georgia got on the board early with two runs in the first. With the bases loaded, Bill Leroy drew a walk to bring in the first run. Conner Corbitt then lifted a pop up that was ruled an infield fly, bringing home Michael Gouge on the sacrifice fly.

North Georgia added two runs in the eighth as Corbitt led off with a double and later scored on Andres Perez‘s sacrifice fly. Steven Tomlinson later scored on a safety squeeze bunt from Devin Gearhart.

Kal Dempsey was the only Nighthawk to collect more than one hit as he went 2-for-3. Gouge and Corbitt had the only extra-base hits in the game.

Game #2: Georgia College 7, North Georgia 6

North Georgia jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI-singles by Trevor Sams and Bill Leroy.

After GC evened up the score in the third, the Nighthawk offense struck again in the bottom half with a RBI-double from Michael Gouge and a RBI-single from Corbitt.

North Georgia would extend its lead to 5-2 after plating a single run in the fifth, but the Bobcats used five runs on five hits in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Both teams would register 10 hits on the night with Devin Gearhart, Sams, Hoover and Leroy each recording two hits apiece.

Josh Bryan (4-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after surrendering two earned runs in the sixth inning.

Notes

– McCrary retired 15 batters in a row at one point as he allowed only four Hurricanes to reach base.

– Tonight’s second game was North Georgia’s third in the past 24 hours after ending play on Friday morning at 1:45 a.m., the Nighthawks returned on short rest for today’s 1:30 and 8:30 first pitches.

– Michael Gouge extended his reached base streak to a team-best 34 games.

– North Georgia is ranked No. 2 behind Mount Olive in the final published Southeast Region poll. A likely NCAA regional berth would be the program’s second in the last three years and third in the NCAA era.

UNG Student Charged with Strong Arm Rape

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office arrested University of North Georgia student Jesse Luke Clements, 22, Thursday and charged him with the strong arm rape of a 20-year-old UNG co-ed at the Bellamy Apartments just off the Dahlonega campus.

According to authorities the unidentified female victim knew Clements and invited him back to her apartment where the alleged rape took place. The victim did not report the incident to the sheriff’s office until the next day. Deputies went to his apartment at 82 College Lane and arrested him without incident.

Clements Facebook page indicates he attended LaFayette High School in LaFayette, Ga. and, in addition to being a student at UNG, is also employed by the school.

He is currently being held without bond at the Lumpkin County Detention Center.

 

Hartness & Smith Named Top 25 Finalists for National Player of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hartness_Smith_Player_of_YearUniversity of North Georgia softball players Stephanie Hartness and Kylee Smith were two of twenty-five student-athletes that were selected as finalists for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award. The winner will be announced on May 24 at the NCAA Division II National Championship banquet in Salem, Virginia.

This group of student-athletes, which includes 2016 recipient Lyndsay Butler of Wayne State University, is represented by 23 different programs and 18 conferences. Sixteen from the original Top-50 “Watchlist” made the cut with the final group consisting of 10 seniors, 11 juniors, two sophomores, one freshman and one graduate student.

Top-ranked Angelo State University and No. 3 University of North Georgia had two selections each. The Great Lakes Valley Conference topped the list with four honorees. The Lone Star Conference led the way with three student-athletes, while the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference, Peach Belt Conference, California Collegiate Athletic Association and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference garnered two nods apiece.

Collecting one plaudit apiece was the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Great American Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Gulf South Conference, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Mountain East Conference, Northeast 10 Conference, Pacific West Conference, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Southern Athletic Conference and Sunshine State Conference.

The Top 10 finalists will be announced on May 11 and the Top 3 on May 17 with the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year revealed on Tuesday, May 24 prior to the start of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships.

The award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievement among softball student-athletes throughout Division II. North Georgia’s Courtney Poole was the inaugural winner of the award.

Weather Forces Multiple Changes to Softball Schedule

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia Department of Athletics has announced multiple changes to the Nighthawks softball schedule that impact games originally scheduled for this week.

UNG’s doubleheader against Lee that has already been rescheduled twice, has once again been postponed due to the threat of severe weather in the Dahlonega area tomorrow afternoon. The two teams will once again look to reschedule the games for a later date. Any rescheduling announcement will be updated in this story and posted on the official UNG Softball Twitter account, @UNGSoftball.

North Georgia’s twin bill set for Thursday against Belmont Abbey has been cancelled. The games will not be made up. BAC was forced to change their schedule due to conference scheduling obligations.

The No. 17 Nighthawks will be back in action on Saturday, hosting rival-Young Harris at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium for a doubleheader that is slated for a 2 p.m. start.

UNG women’s soccer defeats Mount Olive, 1-0

HICKORY, N.C. – Taylor Malasek scored in the ninth minute, and the back line made it hold up as the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team advanced on in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with a 1-0 win over Mount Olive Friday afternoon.

Payton Bisso sent a cross in to Rosie Embley, who found just enough of a touch to get to a wide open Malasek alone in the 18. The junior calmly put the shot away above the Trojan keeper to give UNG all it needed for the win.

NOTES
– The Nighthawks have never lost an opening round game in the NCAA tournament in its six appearances.
– Previously unbeaten, the Trojans were only able to get off 10 shots total with Morgan Ramby saving the only four on target.
– Seventh-seeded Wingate upset second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the second game of the day, 4-0.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will battle Wingate on Sunday at 2 p.m. to determine who moves on to the regional final in two weeks.

Sabol leads the way in LeeAnn Noble Memorial Golf Tournament

DAHLONEGA – Megan Sabol shot a 3-under 69 to sit in a tie for the tournament lead as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team fired a 296 in the opening round of the LeeAnn Noble Memorial Monday at Achasta Golf Club. UNG’s team score, as well as Sabol’s score, is the second-best 18-hole score in program history.

After opening the round with bogey, Sabol finished the day with four birdies and 13 pars, birdieing three holes on the back nine. Her score of 69 is one shot off the tournament record for a single round.

The Nighthawks sit in second place, two shots behind No. 14 Lee after 18 holes. Columbus State is in third, followed by UNC Pembroke and West Georgia to round out the top five.

North Georgia also has Miranda Rich (+3, t11), Alexis Whitney (+4, t17) and Karson Stone (+4, t17) in the top 20, while Carson Roberts (+5, t21) is just outside of the top 20.

The Nighthawks will tee off on holes 1-4 tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. as part of a shotgun start.

UNG women’s soccer team rolls past USC Aiken 2-0

AIKEN, S.C. – Rosie Embley scored twice as the No. 20 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team shut out its fifth Peach Belt opponent of the year with a 3-0 win over USC Aiken Saturday night.

Embley got the Nighthawks on the board with a goal in the 17th minute to the right of the Pacer goalie. After going into halftime up 1-0, Katey Derkay doubled the UNG lead, scoring from about 10 yards out in the 52nd minute.

Embley scored her second goal at the one hour mark off a pass from Maysoon El-Shami that put the game at its final score.

NOTES

This is Embley’s second career brace with the first coming in her freshman year on September 17, 2016, against Georgia College.

The Nighthawk defense held USCA to just five shots with only one needing to be saved. UNG took 20 shots in comparison with eight on target.

North Georgia is now one conference clean sheet away from tying the program record for PBC shutouts in a season.

NEXT UP

The Nighthawks will go out of league play Wednesday night to battle Anderson on the road at 5 p.m.
