Ozer earns goal and assist in 2-0 win over Flagler

DAHLONEGA – Eren Ozer hit a free kick from just outside the penalty area to put the game out of reach as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team went to 1-0 in league play with a 2-0 win over Flagler Saturday afternoon.
Ozer earned an assist on the game’s first goal as he found Donovan Odier in the box and Odier put the ball in the net in the 59th minute. Eight minutes later, Ozer blasted a ball to the far post from the corner of the penalty area off a free kick to double the Nighthawk lead.
NOTES
The Nighthawks were outshot, 14-13, in the game.
Conner Domaleski made seven saves in the match to earn his second clean sheet of the season.

Award-winning pub gears up for annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser

Shenanigans Irish Pub, located right off the historic Dahlonega square, is getting ready for their annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser with some beneficial renovations.

The owner, Deb Rowe, told FYN that the most significant changes made to the pub were enclosing the patio, protecting their outside courtyard from water drainage from the street, and adding new ramps, making the entire patio and courtyard wheelchair accessible. Rowe explained how the community will benefit from the new improvements, “Now, everyone can get from the courtyard, to the deck and to the patio; the courtyard is all accessible.”

The renovations have taken place just weeks before their upcoming 11th annual Shucking for Shamrocks fundraiser event, which Rowe started as a way to raise money for research on Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Cystic Fibrosis. The weekend-long event includes a silent auction and fresh Florida oysters that are shucked on-site. Rowe revealed that this year they are extending the event space into their parking lot, giving them an additional 40×40 square feet of room.
Rowe also explained that during the first year of the fundraiser, they raised $6400, which has grown to $40,000 ten years later, “Originally, the first few years we were raising $6,000 to $8,000, and it was just for Muscular Dystrophy. Then my sister was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and even though Cystic Fibrosis is relatively rare, I know several people who have it.” In 2018, Shenanigans earned the Community Involvement Award from the Georgia chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for their contributions resulting from Shucking for Shamrocks.

The event will be from August 31 until September 2, and community members are encouraged to sign up to volunteer for the event, “Above and beyond making donations to the silent auction and spending money at the event, we have an inter-active volunteer sign-up link [on their Facebook page]. We really just need additional bodies to help.”
Smith named Schutt Sports/NFCA Player of the Year finalist

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Ten finalists have been selected for the 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year awards, and University of North Georgia pitcher Kylee Smith is on the list for a third straight year.
It marks the fifth straight season a student-athlete from North Georgia has been named to the list and the third time for the junior who won the Player of the Year award a year ago. This is the first year that a Pitcher of the Year will be awarded.
Other former Nighthawks that have been on the finalist list include Courtney Poole, who won the inaugural award in 2015, and Stephanie Hartness in 2016.
The two award winners will be announced on May 30 following the conclusion of the Division II Softball Championship.

Roberts finishes tied for 7th, Nighthawks 5th in PBC Tourney

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Carson Roberts shot a final round 78 to finish in a tie for seventh at the Peach Belt Championship as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team finished in fifth place in the tournament.
North Georgia shot a 957 for the 54-hole tournament, good for the third-best 54 hole score in program history. Roberts’ three round score of 233 is good for a tie for second in program history, tying Mariana Pelaez from the 2014 West Georgia Invitational.
Flagler won the team title after shooting the lowest round of the day at 303, winning by 11 strokes over UNC Pembroke. Columbus State finished in third, followed by Young Harris and UNG.
Individually, Columbus State’s Victoria Libaak won the tournament by one stroke over two players with a 225 score.

UNG women’s tennis team advances to PBC title match

FLORENCE, S.C. – The No. 10 University of North Georgia women’s tennis team claimed two wins Saturday in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament to advance to the championship match Sunday afternoon.
Quarterfinal: UNG 4, FMU 0
The Nighthawks quickly worked through the doubles point against Francis Marion in the quarterfinal with Holly Bennett and Vaishali Jorge winning, 6-2, at the top line and Emma Etelalahti and Adrienne Bofinger winning, 6-1, at No. 2.
In singles, Bofinger put North Georgia up, 2-0, with a 6-1, 6-1 win that was followed closely behind by Lexa Loden’s 6-2, 6-2 win. Jorge clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. The Nighthawks were leading in two of the three matches left on the courts.
Semifinal: UNG 4, FC 1
Again, North Georgia cruised through doubles with Bennett and Jorge quickly dispatching their opponent, 6-1, before Loden and Cibeles Zuddy won, 7-5, at No. 3.
Flagler tied the match up with a win at No. 4 singles, but the Nighthawks clinched the match shortly thereafter with straight set wins at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 singles. The No. 1 and 3 lines were in a third set when the match was clinched.

North Georgia will battle No. 4 Columbus State tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. for the PBC Tournament Championship.

UNG shuts out California (PA) IN NFCA Leadoff Classic Finale

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG junior, Bria Bush, shutout 4.1 innings of softball as the No. 3 UNG team finished of the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a 6-0 win over the California University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.

UNG landed three runs during the third inning. UNG freshman, Hobby Gregory, scored before teammate, Alishia Frierson, plated Kaylee Womack on an RBI single, just two pitches later, putting UNG up 2-0.
Womack brought home another run in the fifth, plating sophomore, Kaylin Anthony, on a sacrifice fly that took the lead to 4-0. Freshman, Olivia Sinquefield, was responsible for the final two runs of the game, tripling in the sixth to score Kelly Kahlert, scoring herself on a Vulcan error.

UNG picked to finish 5th in Peach Belt Conference

AUGUSTA, Ga. – After a 31-22 season a year ago, the University of North Georgia baseball was pocked to finish fifth in the Peach Belt Preseason Poll, the league announced Friday. Columbus State was tabbed as the favorite to win the league after falling in the national championship game a year ago.
The Nighthawks return two preseason All-Conference players in Andres Perez and Parker Morrison. Both were also named preseason All-Region. UNG returns a pitcher with 2018 All-Conference honoree Cade Heil back for his sophomore campaign.
Columbus State garnered eight of a possible 10 first place votes, followed by Georgia College, UNC Pembroke. USC Aiken was picked fourth.
North Georgia will open play in the 2019 season on the road at Florida Tech Feb. 1. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The Nighthawks claimed all possible first place votes to earn a maximum point total of 121 in the poll. Columbus State was second in the voting with Lander third and a tie for fourth between Flagler and Francis Marion. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.
UNG claimed their second-ever PBC regular season championship and their first PBC Tournament title in 2017-18. UNG also made their second NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the round of 16 and the regional championship game. The Nighthawks will return three of their top four scorers from last year’s team including All-Conference senior guards Amber Skidgel and Vanessa Agrusa. Also returning is 2017-18 PBC Freshman of the Year Abbie Franklin.
UNG women’s soccer team defeats Limestone 3-1

The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team remains undefeated against Limestone after walking away with a 3-1 victory over the Saints Wednesday.
Three minutes after Limestone tied the game in the first half, freshman Abbie Crane blasted a shot into the net to take the lead. The Nighthawks struck first in the 13th minute when Dani Shartouny intercepted a low goal kick and took it herself to goal, taking the early lead. Limestone brought it back to even in the 25th minute on Megan O’Conner’s fifth goal of the young season.
Right after the Saint goal, Crane checked in and, three minutes later, found the net off a rebounded shot, giving the Nighthawks a 2-1 lead headed to halftime.
The Nighthawks found insurance in the 84th minute when Taylor Malasek finished off a counter started by Shartouny to push UNG to their third win of the season.

UNG women’s golf tops leaderboard after Full Moon BBQ Invitational

Megan Sabol carded a one-under 71 as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team leads the Full Moon BBQ Invitational after the opening round Monday at Timberline Golf Club.
The Nighthawks shot a 302 in the opening round to lead No. 25 West Georgia by a single stroke. Montevallo is in third, finishing 10 strokes behind UNG, while West Florida and Christian Brothers sit in a tie for fourth.
Sabol started off the day with a birdie on the par-3 16th. She also birdied the par-5 11th hole to get back to one-under after a bogey earlier in the round. The junior is in second individually, two strokes behind West Georgia’s Franziska Bremm.
Rounding out the scoring four for the Nighthawks were Carson Roberts (+5), Jordyn Sims (+7) and Karson Stone (+7). Roberts is in a tie for sixth place, while Sims and Stone are in a tie for 12th. Alexis Whitney, playing as an individual, shot six-over to sit in a tie for ninth individually.
The final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning as the teams will have a shotgun start.

University of North Georgia announces men’s basketball schedule

The University of North Georgia Athletic Communications department has released the 2018-2019 men’s basketball schedule. Head University of North Georgia men’s basketball coach Chris Faulkner has announced the 2018-19 schedule of contests that includes a nationally televised game on January 9, 2019, against Columbus State in the UNG Convocation Center.
The season gets started with three straight home games, beginning with an exhibition matchup against Emory on November 4. The regular season gets going on November 9 as the Nighthawks host the Peach Belt / Conference Carolinas Challenge with matchups against North Greenville and Erskine.
After a quick trip to Lee, the Nighthawks return home for two more home games against Southern Wesleyan (November 17) and West Georgia (November 20.)
Peach Belt play starts on December 1 as UNG travels to Francis Marion before the final non-conference game of the year on the road at Emmanuel. After finals, the Nighthawks will have four out of five at home in league play, including the matchup with Columbus State on ESPN3.
North Georgia will finish the regular season with five home games out of the last seven, starting with Spirit Night on February 13 against Young Harris.

Lumpkin County Board of Education announces called meeting for August 24

11 days after they voted on the current millage rate, which will result in a property tax increase, the Lumpkin County Board of Education announced that they will hold a called meeting on August 24. The announcement came after local media and local citizens questioned the integrity behind previous public hearings that involved the millage rate vote.
According to their Facebook page, the purpose of the meeting is to, “hear community feedback regarding millage rates, school system budgets, and school finance.” They also stated that, “all community members are encouraged to attend and to provide feedback or ask questions.If you are unable to attend, but wish to provide feedback, please email our school board members.”
In a separate post on social media, Superintendient, Dr. Robert Brown, released the following statement, “It is ridiculous for anyone to suggest that our school board is not welcoming of public input or attempted to avoid feedback provided at the millage hearings. Our school board members receive phone calls and emails from concerns and supportive citizens on a regular basis. They welcome and seek feedback from a variety of sourced in our community, all in an effort to continue providing a premier education for all students in Lumpkin County.” However, according to a local Dahlonega resident, several attempts at contacting members of the board and the superintendent were all left unanswered.
FYN also called and emailed each board member, as well as the superintendent, but did not receive a response.
The meeting will be held at the Lumpkin County Central Office at 6pm.

DAHLONEGA – Both Sydney Sprague and Brittany Gilliam hit homers on Senior Day as the No. 1 University of North Georgia softball team swept Flagler in the regular season finale, winning by scores of 5-0 and 5-3 Friday night under the lights at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
GAME ONE In the fourth, Gilliam doubled to right center, scoring Sprague to put North Georgia up, 4-0, before she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth which brought home the game’s final run. Kylee Smith (28-1) gave up just one hit in her 16th complete game of the year, striking out 12 Saints along the way. GAME TWO Kaylyn Anthony hit a solo shot with one out in the frame to tie the game before a RBI single by Hobby Gregory that plated two more Nighthawk runs after a throwing error by the Flagler catcher, putting UNG up, 4-1. The Saints struck back in the third on a Maria Kappos RBI double in the top half of the third, but UNG got the run back in the bottom of the frame on Gilliam’s solo blast to right field. Flagler scratched the final run across in the seventh inning on a RBI groundout. NOTES – Sprague finished the day going 4-for-6 at the plate after a perfect 3-for-3 first game. Gilliam was 2-for-5 on Senior Day. – The Nighthawks have now won 53 games on the season, making them just one win away from tying the all-time record for wins in a season. NGHS reaches agreement to sell Chestatee Regional to University of North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) purchase of Chestatee Regional Hospital (CRH) has opened up an opportunity for the University of North Georgia (UNG) to meet the school’s growing educational needs.
NGHS officials announced Friday an agreement to sell the facility to UNG. While the school will not be able to occupy the building for a couple of years, it plans to house nursing, physical therapy, and counseling education programs, as well as two existing, outreach clinics from the counseling and physical therapy departments designed to serve specialized health needs of the community.
UNG President Bonita Jacobs said, “UNG has been exploring opportunities to add academic space for the Dahlonega Campus, and this acquisition will have a transformative impact across multiple academic programs. The healthcare sector is a broad-reaching, high-demand career area, and the facility could serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary opportunities and collaborations to support workforce development needs, such as advanced technologies, informatics, and analytics.”
Jacobs thanked Gov. Nathan Deal and State Sen. Steve Gooch and the Board of Regents for their leadership in facilitating the purchase that will ensure healthcare for this rural community long-term, while also improving healthcare education opportunities.
State legislators have earmarked dollars in the state’s 2019 fiscal year budget for the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to purchase the property. Acquisition will require final approval by the Board of Regents later this year. If approved, the Board of Regents initially would lease the property to NGHS.
Meanwhile, NGHS officials will conduct an assessment of the community’s healthcare needs, including evaluating the possibility of a new facility in Lumpkin County, just south of the intersection of Georgia Highways 400 and 60.
“Chestatee Regional Hospital has been a vital resource for Lumpkin County and an integral part of healthcare in the region for more than 40 years,” said Carol Burrell, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of NGHS. “We look forward to working with the community to better understand what care it needs and collaborating to create a plan to meet those needs in the future.”
CRH is required to notify federal regulators of plans to close the hospital later this year, which would help assure existing liabilities are not tied to future owners or operators. A specific date will be set for the hospital closing during a required due diligence period.
“Our immediate goal is to assess what is needed to re-establish high-quality healthcare services in Lumpkin County after the hospital closes,” Louis Smith, president of Acute and Post-Acute Operations for NGHS, said. “Given what information we’ve received about existing resources, we estimate it may take as many as 12 months to complete that assessment.”
Gooch, who also serves as executive director of Lumpkin County’s Development Authority, said the deal would both stabilize the future of healthcare for Northeast Georgia and allow UNG expanded academic space.
