UNG women’s soccer team defeats Limestone 3-1

The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team remains undefeated against Limestone after walking away with a 3-1 victory over the Saints Wednesday.
Three minutes after Limestone tied the game in the first half, freshman Abbie Crane blasted a shot into the net to take the lead. The Nighthawks struck first in the 13th minute when Dani Shartouny intercepted a low goal kick and took it herself to goal, taking the early lead. Limestone brought it back to even in the 25th minute on Megan O’Conner’s fifth goal of the young season.
Right after the Saint goal, Crane checked in and, three minutes later, found the net off a rebounded shot, giving the Nighthawks a 2-1 lead headed to halftime.
The Nighthawks found insurance in the 84th minute when Taylor Malasek finished off a counter started by Shartouny to push UNG to their third win of the season.

Megan Sabol carded a one-under 71 as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team leads the Full Moon BBQ Invitational after the opening round Monday at Timberline Golf Club.
The Nighthawks shot a 302 in the opening round to lead No. 25 West Georgia by a single stroke. Montevallo is in third, finishing 10 strokes behind UNG, while West Florida and Christian Brothers sit in a tie for fourth.
Sabol started off the day with a birdie on the par-3 16th. She also birdied the par-5 11th hole to get back to one-under after a bogey earlier in the round. The junior is in second individually, two strokes behind West Georgia’s Franziska Bremm.
Rounding out the scoring four for the Nighthawks were Carson Roberts (+5), Jordyn Sims (+7) and Karson Stone (+7). Roberts is in a tie for sixth place, while Sims and Stone are in a tie for 12th. Alexis Whitney, playing as an individual, shot six-over to sit in a tie for ninth individually.
The final round is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning as the teams will have a shotgun start.

University of North Georgia announces men’s basketball schedule

The University of North Georgia Athletic Communications department has released the 2018-2019 men’s basketball schedule. Head University of North Georgia men’s basketball coach Chris Faulkner has announced the 2018-19 schedule of contests that includes a nationally televised game on January 9, 2019, against Columbus State in the UNG Convocation Center.
The season gets started with three straight home games, beginning with an exhibition matchup against Emory on November 4. The regular season gets going on November 9 as the Nighthawks host the Peach Belt / Conference Carolinas Challenge with matchups against North Greenville and Erskine.
After a quick trip to Lee, the Nighthawks return home for two more home games against Southern Wesleyan (November 17) and West Georgia (November 20.)
Peach Belt play starts on December 1 as UNG travels to Francis Marion before the final non-conference game of the year on the road at Emmanuel. After finals, the Nighthawks will have four out of five at home in league play, including the matchup with Columbus State on ESPN3.
North Georgia will finish the regular season with five home games out of the last seven, starting with Spirit Night on February 13 against Young Harris.

Georgia Trend names Sen. Steve Gooch one of Georgia’s most influential people

ATLANTA – Senator Steve Gooch (R – Dahlonega) was recognized as one of Georgia’s most influential people by Georgia Trend magazine. The magazine’s annual list recognizes the 100 Most Influential Georgians.
“It is an honor to be recognized among this distinguished list of leaders in our great state,” said Sen. Gooch. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and local community leaders to keep Georgia moving in the right direction. Over the past several years, we have seen numerous businesses moving to Georgia leading to additional economic growth and job creation. We will work hard during this upcoming session to continue this progress for our state.”
Georgia Trend recognized Sen. Gooch’s work in the Georgia Senate and his consistent efforts to improve education and public schools for children in his district and around the state. They also acknowledged his work on job creation, immigration, tax reform and the right to bear arms. Sen. Gooch has also been a leader for transportation in Georgia.
Georgia Trend releases their 100 Most Influential Georgians list annually. The list includes individuals who make a positive impact on the lives of Georgians and make decisions that affect the well-being of the state. Naming the top 100 is a year-round process and the final list includes those who “have exhibited the character necessary to inspire, challenge, lead – and influence us.”

- Union County Schools will be CLOSED Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th due to Gov. Nathan Deal declaring a state of emergency for all 159 counties in Georgia. Please continue to monitor here for further updates.
- Fannin County Schools will be closed for students and all personnel on Monday, September 11 and Tuesday, September 12, for students, as well as all faculty and staff, except for 12-month personnel, district directors, and principals. As long as it is safe to do so, all 12-month personnel, as well as district directors and principals, should anticipate reporting by 9:00 a.m. on September 12. These personnel should note, though, that this expectation may be revised, depending on the weather conditions overnight; nonetheless, if you ever believe it is unsafe to report, please notify your immediate supervisor. In addition, the Board of Education work session meeting that was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12, has been cancelled. Please continue to stay safe!
- Pickens County Schools closed Monday, September 11th – TWELVE MONTH EMPLOYEES REPORT AT NORMAL TIME. Schools will also be closed on Tuesday, September 12. Twelve month employees will be contacted late Monday as to whether they will be required to come to work on Tuesday. All school activities, including athletic events and after-school programs, will be canceled.
- Gilmer County Schools will be closed Monday, September 11th and Sepember 12th due to Hurricane Irma. We have made this decision after consultation with local emergency management authorities and careful consideration of safety factors, such as the probability of severe winds especially at higher elevations, debris, dangerous road conditions and downed power lines left in its wake. Only 12 month staff should report if safe to do so.
- Dawson County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Twelve month employees will operate on a 2 hour delay.
- Lumpkin County Schools closed due to the weather forecast for our area, Lumpkin County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. The anticipated high winds pose a significant threat to our students and staff. We understand that weather predictions are not always accurate, but we cannot ignore the potentially dangerous situation that this storm poses. Our number one priority is to keep our students and staff safe! Wednesday will still be a early release day as planned so that teachers will be available for parent conferences. 12 month employees should report if it is safe to do so.
- Towns County Schools closed Monday, September 11th and Tuesday, September 12th for all students. All employees should report at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 12th if safe to do so.
- White County Schools due to the severe weather forecast, White County Schools are closed for students and staff Monday, September 11, and Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Please be safe!
- Murray County Schools closed Monday September 11 and Tuesday September 12, due to the possible impact of Hurricane Irma. We have made this decision after consultation with local emergency management authorities and careful consideration of safety factors, such as the probability of severe winds, debris, dangerous road conditions, and downed power lines. We understand that weather predictions are often incorrect, but the size of this storm cannot be ignored. It is our hope that Murray County is spared from any of this storm’s impact, but we will always choose to error on the side of caution. This meeting will be rescheduled for Thursday, September 14 at 6:15 p.m. All maintenance, grounds crew, and transportation employees will meet at the transportation office.

Mr. James “Jimmy” Patrick Rushford, age 51, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, November 22, 2019.
Jimmy was born in Norwich, CT on February 1, 1968. He has lived in Dahlonega the last five years. Jimmy was preceded in death by his father Rex Eugene Rushford. He graduated from Teacher’s Memorial High School in Norwich, CT. Jimmy was also a graduate of The International Lion’s Club in Ocala, FL. He was an accomplished Special Olympian and avid WWE Wrestling fan. His favorite wrestlers were John Cena and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
Survivors include his mother Bernadette Schatz, Dahlonega; brothers Joseph R. Brierley, Dahlonega, Bruce Rushford, Ocala, FL, and Todd P. Missino, Dahlonega; sisters Cynthia R. Banckelant (Andrew), Dahlonega, and Laurie R. McClelan, Florida; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Jimmy’s wishes were to be cremated and a private memorial service will be held later.

James Martin: Obituary

Mr. James Martin, age 93, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, September 30, 2019.
Our devoted husband and father passed from this world early in the morning of September 30, 2019 to join his beloved wife of 70 years at the Trianon Dance Hall in Toledo where they met to start a brand new dance card with his favorite polka partner. He was a retiree of DuPont where he worked for 43 years serving in refinish sales, training, and education. He was proud to say that the checks were “still coming” from DuPont for the last 31 years, after he said “adios!”
Mr. Martin attended Bowling Green University of Ohio, “Ziggy Zaggy, Ziggy Zaggy, Oy Oy Oy!” and he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He and his wife Dorothy raised seven children living in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, and last but not least, Georgia. Mr. Martin was a lover of stories and words and there was not a person who was a stranger to him. He shared stories of summers in Tutor Key, Kentucky at his grandfather’s apple orchards and also of the many jobs he held from the time he was 13 starting with cleaning railroad engines and ending with training and education of people at DuPont.
Mr. Martin was an avid reader who loved a good book especially if it was about the Civil War. He would let you borrow a book, but he kept close tabs on them. Mr. Martin was a true servant volunteering for many positions at St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the Dahlonega community. He always said “keep your sense of humor to get through life’s adversities” and “getting old is not for sissies”.
Mr. Martin was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 18, 1926. He was preceded in death by his parents Edna Van Hoose Martin Sparks and Clarence Martin. His step-father was the great Ralph Sparks and was affectionately known as “Sparky”.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law William and Janet Martin, Cleveland; son James V.H. Martin II, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law Jacqueline and Alan McDonald, Charlotte, NC, Edna and David Guntert, Germantown, TN, and Barbara and Marc Shanberg, Tampa, FL; son Matthew Martin, Nashville, TN; daughter and son-in-law Suzan Martin and Dominic Cianciola, Tampa, FL; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Michael Mahovlich, Dade City, FL; grandchildren Hannah Largacci, James III and Ashley Martin, Heather and Adam Stockstill, Brendan McDonald, Christopher and Megan Guntert, Alexandra Guntert, Elizabeth Shanberg and Patrick Van House, Andrew Shanberg, Savannah Martin, Scarlett Martin, Ava Cianciola, and Ryan Backmann; great-grandchildren Emma and Margaret Largacci, Thaddeus, Guy, and Anya Martin, and Austin and Blake Stockstill.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, October 4, 2019 at St. Luke’s the Evangelist Catholic Church. Father Matthew Dalrymple and Father Edward Danneker will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday following visitation hours.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center for their support and help through Mr. Martin’s illness and passing. Ms. Hannah Bender, age 21, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2019.
Hannah was born in Hall County on September 4, 1998. She attended Lumpkin County High School. Hannah was an artist and all that comes with that. She was an amazing soul taking every chance she could to make you smile. Hannah loved her family and gave tremendous strength and courage to her mom. Her words, “I got you mama”, will forever be cherished by her mother. Hannah’s hands were a gift from God. Her art would give testimony to the wonder and beauty of the ability to create. Hannah, now safely in the arms of God, will paint the sky for all of us!

Doles calls for peaceful Trump rally Sept. 14

DAHLONEGA, Ga. –
“There will not be one single word about recruiting for any organization,” he said. “It’s simple. This is all about a tribute to President Donald Trump. We’re going to sing the National Anthem, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a moment of silence for former Hall County Deputy Nicholas Blane Dixon.”
Dixon is the deputy who was shot and killed in Gainesville in July while in pursuit of a stolen vehicle. Dixon, 28, left behind a wife and two young sons.
Doles said he withdrew his notice of intent because of the reaction from Atlanta Antifascists. “I submitted my notice around the first of August and was hoping to get 100 or more people to attend. But within a week, they began sending out emails trying to scare people out of coming. So, I withdrew and Dustin Pinner, who is my neighbor and a friend filed the notice. Davis is a decorated veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq. He’s not a member of any extremist organization.”
Doles said he is hopeful the event will be a peaceful expression of support for the president. “No one in our group will be armed in any way. We will have our wives and children with us. At the start of the event, I’m going to make an announcement asking everyone to refrain from any violence.”
He expressed concern about what he called “Antifa tactics” of placing their people in the crowd wearing MAGA caps and having them start trouble. “It won’t come from our side,” he said. “We’re going to let the world see who the aggressors are.”
