According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, 10 members of the UNG women’s basketball team earned a spot in the scoring column as the No. 16 Nighthawks downed Clark Atlanta, 87-55, Wednesday night in the UNG Convocation Center.
The Nighthawks hd a strong 7-0 start before the Panthers, increasing that to a 12-0 run later in the first quarter, with the Panthers unable to outscore UNG.

UNG women’s cross-country team runners up at PCB Championship

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the UNG women’s cross-country team finished in second place on Saturday at the PCB Championship.
UNG junior, Aleah Johnson, led three All-Conference runners to second place behind Flagler Saturday morning at Redcliffe Plantation. Johnson finished in fourth place overall after running a 5K time of 18:40. UNG junior, Bree Hammond, finished in sixth place at 18:51, while sophomore, Kaylee Haake, finished in 15th at 19:09. All three earned All-Conference honors.
Flagler won the race, finishing with 46 points, followed by UNG at 60 points. Columbus State, Georgia College and Augusta rounded out the top five.
This is UNG’s fifth top-2 finish in a row after claiming runner-up honors in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

UNG freshman sets new rifling record as No. 19

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG freshman, Ricky Medina, shot an aggregate score of 1170, beating the previous aggregate scoring record by four points as the No. 19 UNG rifle team defeated the University of Alabama Saturday at the COL Raymond C. Hamilton Rifle Range. Clemson also shot in the event, but they do not count in the results, due to the Tigers competing as a club sport.
Medina tied the smallbore scoring record, firing a 584 in the discipline. He was perfect in the prone position, scoring two perfect 100 strings in the process. He coupled that with a 586 in the air rifle discipline to defeat the field by 19 points in the aggregate scoring.
UNG shot a season-high 4617 as a team, finishing just five points off the school record in aggregate, and had the top three shooters with Medina, Tobin Sanctuary and Kimberlee Nettles.
Other highlights from the event were personal records for Veronica Stanley in smallbore (567), Eric Azotea in air rifle (573) and Lucas Gilliland in air rifle (582).

Dahlonega mayor, Sam Norton, declared the week of September 17-23 as “Constitution Week,” during the City Hall meeting on Thursday, September 20.
Constitution Week was started by the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1955, when DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. During Thursday’s meeting, Dahlonega mayor, Sam Norton, honored the petition with a proclamation, “I encourage all citizens to study the Constitution, and reflect on the privilege of being an American.”
Elizabeth Curley, Anne Converse, Susanne Daniel, and Dr. Donna Whitfield, members of the Trahlyta Chapter, were present to receive the proclamation. DAR is the oldest women’s service denomination in the United States. The Trahlyta Chapter has 55 members, and according to their website, “The objectives of the Trahlyta Chapter NSDAR are to promote historic preservation along with encouraging active participation in educational and patriotic endeavors.”
In order to become a member of DAR, direct, blood lineage to someone who served in the American Revolution is required.

Long Branch and Lumpkin County Elementary Schools were also highlighted during Monday’s meeting, for student success. LCES Principle, Stacie Gerrells, presented new activities and incentives target towards student success, specifically in reading, that are new to Lumpkin Elementary this year. Some of the programs mentioned is Caring Paws, where select students are allowed to read with a therapy dog from Trained Paws Therapy Dogs, and also “Starbooks”, which is a spinoff from Starbucks. Starbooks is a reading incentive where students can earn ‘Starbooks Cash’ that can be spent on hot cocoa and other rewards.
Long Branch Elementary School Principles, Jan Mullinax and Nathan Gerrells, explained they also offer a reading-with-the-dogs program, but their students are most excited over their newest positive-behavior inspiration, a “House Point System.” This gives students an opportunity to earn house points for good behavior. The ‘House’ with the most points at the end of the month will celebrate with a small party, and the house with he most points at the end of the year will be rewarded with a larger celebration. There are four houses that represent different character traits and they are identified by a color and animal that is specific to that trait.
The houses are: Animo, House of Courage, (green), Reverenta, House of Respect, (red), Concordia, House of Harmony (blue), and Unum, House of Unity (yellow). You can learn more about the House System here.

Eduardo Pessoa scored twice and Eren Ozer scored late as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team earned a 4-4 draw with Tampa Thursday night at Clayton State’s Laker Field.
Tampa got things going in the 12th minute with a goal from Till Neumann, but the Nighthawks answered as Adam Farrell put home the first UNG goal of 2018 on a penalty kick in the 37th
minute. Just four minutes later, though, the Spartans regained the lead on a shot from distance to take a 2-1 lead to halftime.
After most of the second half went by scoreless, UNG evened it up with the first Pessoa goal of the night off a Prince Domafriyie pass. Tampa answered with two goals within 60 seconds of one another to take a 4-2 lead.

The Nighthawks didn’t give up, however, as Pessoa scored his second with 12 minutes left off a rebound before Eren Ozer hit a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to tie the game back up. Tampa took 12 shots in the overtime periods but could not find a fifth goal and the game ended in a draw.

BoJack played a huge role in the Indians first season win on Friday night. He ran for 166 yards over 22 carries and scored three of the four touchdowns for the Indians. After the game he was all smiles as he celebrated with his teammates and family.

Dahlonega City Hall announces special called meeting

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Dahlonega City Council will hold a special called meeting at the Dahlonega City Hall on September 5, at 4:30pm to discuss Ordinance 2019-time, manner, and place, and Ordinance 2019-25.
According to City Hall, Ordinance 2019 is, “An ordinance regulating planned and spontaneous demonstrations on public property.” Ordinance 2019-25 is, “An ordinance to encourage innovative and safe uses of unmanned aircraft while addressing concerns about accountability.”

Lady Indians push forward with 5-4 win against Panthers

A couple of hits for the Panthers and mistakes from the Lady Indians allowed Union County to get on the board first at Tuesday night’s game. Although both teams played a solid game, in a theme that seems to be recurrent for the Lady Indians this season, Lumpkin started to come back in the bottom of the fifth for an overall 5-4 victory.
The first couple of innings displayed the defensive strength of both teams. Both teams put the ball into play during their first at-bats, but couldn’t get anything on the board before the other would get the third out. The Lady Indians defense had an especially great three up, three down for the top of the second inning.
Union County starting pitcher Megan Bright pitched a total of four strikeouts after 4 2/3 innings. Starting pitcher for the Lady Indians Natalie Robinson stayed in the entire game and pitched a great six innings with two strikeouts.
Runners started to score for Union in the top of the fourth after a double by center fielder Mary Wischmeyer. A single to right field by third baseman Caley Davis advanced Wischmeyer to third, who was then able to score after the ball got past Lumpkin catcher Natalie Schubert. An error by Lumpkin first baseman Hannah Pulley gave the Panthers time to get another run on the board, as did when the ball got past Schubert again. At the end of the inning the Panthers were ahead 4-0.
Center fielder Mary Wischmeyer got things started off for the Panthers in the top of the fourth with a double.
The Lady Indians left two stranded in the bottom of the fourth, but fought to keep the Panthers back in the top of the fifth. Second baseman Alyssa Pulley played an exceptional inning defensively, with a pop up catch for the first out, a diving catch for an attempt at the second out, and a running catch to get the third out.
The bats were hot for the Lady Indians in the bottom of the fifth, started off by a single to left field by shortstop Evee Dornhecker. Third baseman Lauren English followed with a double, and the Lady Indians got their first run of the night. Schubert hit a single to center field for the second run, and first baseman Hannah Pulley drilled a single to the wall at center field to score courtesy runner Kelsey Marshall and right fielder Haley Voyles. When the dust settled at the end of the inning the Lady Indians had tied the game 4-4.
Lauren English hit a double in the bottom of the fifth to get the first run of the night for the Lady Indians.
A couple of easy outs kept the Panthers from scoring any more runs in the top of the sixth. When the Lady Indians came back up to bat in the bottom of the inning, English hit another double to bring in a RBI and the final run. The Panthers were unable to get anything else past the Lumpkin defense, and the game ended after the top of the seventh inning.
Lady Indians head coach Joe Jones said of the game, “Offensively we waited a little while to adjust, but we finally got some big hits with runners in scoring position and I’m proud of us for sticking with it.”
The Lady Indians will head to Chestatee tonight for a 5 p.m. game. They will be back home on Thursday to face Chestatee again at 5 p.m.
City Council votes in favor for Occupational Tax amendment

The Dahlonega City Council voted in favor, 6-0, of the amendment to “increase occupation tax rates to defray general fund expenses,” after a public hearing held on Monday. City Councilman, Bruce Hoffman, motioned for the proposed ordinance, and Councilwoman, JoAnne Taylor, seconded the motion.
The cost of a business license in Dahlonega is based on the number of people employed by the business. Taylor explained to FYN that, “The City’s fee structures are all being examined since some have not been changed in over 15 years. This fee change does not affect businesses with one employee. The change puts Dahlonega in the average for cities our size. We expect a small impact to our General Fund revenues.”
A public hearing was held on Monday, August 5, before the City Council meeting to, “accept comments on the proposed new occupation tax schedule to be incorporated into the City’s code pertaining to occupation taxes.” According to Taylor, “We held a public hearing on this topic [proposed Occupational Tax amendment] but to date have received no feedback.”
According to the ordinance outline, the tax increase is expected to bring in an additional $13,900 in revenue to help alleviate the “increased cost for general fund operations.” Changes went into effect on Tuesday, August 6, 2019.

Local art to be featured at Art in the Park

The Dahlonega Art Alliance is hosting “Art in the Park” on Saturday, August 10, from 1p.m. until 5p.m. at Hancock Park, located behind the Dahlonega square.
Various local artists will have their work on display and available for purchase to the public; there will also be different mediums of art presented, such as live art, Plein air painting, photography, and music.
Local artist, Lily Payne Art, told FYN that she plans on showcasing her newest sunflower prints, “Art in the Park” will be local artists presenting their work to the public for sale. There will be several tents featuring different styles and mediums.”
Payne also explained that the Dahlonega Art Alliance is a “new alliance for local artists. It is to help local artists get more exposure and support each other through meetings and events.”
Lumpkin County prepares for first day of school

Lumpkin County Students prepare to head back to school, while school faculty and staff have already begun preparations. The pre-planning period for teachers begins on Thursday, (August 1) and will go through Monday, (August 5). The first day of school the 2019-20 school year will begin on Tuesday, August 6th. Open house for all Lumpkin County Elementary Schools is scheduled for Friday, August 2, from 3p.m. until 5p.m.
Lumpkin County Middle School will hold open house for all 6th graders and new students only, on Thursday, August 1, from 3p.m. until 5p.m., and open house for all other LCMS students will be held on Tuesday, August 13, from 3:30p.m. until 5:30p.m.
Lumpkin County High School will hold their open house for freshman, called Freshman Focus, on Thursday, August 1, from 1p.m. until 3p.m, and open house for all other LCHS students will be on Thursday, August 1, from 3p.m. until 5p.m.
School hours for students are as follows:
All elementary schools: 7:50a.m. until 2:50p.m.
LCMS: 7:50a.m. until 2:50p.m.
LCHS: 7:45a.m. until 2:30p.m.
May 22 is the last day of the school year, and students will enjoy early release at 11:30a.m.
LCSS Superintendent, Rob Brown, has taken extra precautions to ensure student safety for elementary school parents who wish to escort their child(ren) to their classrooms the morning of their first day of school. In a press release, Dr. Brown explained, “The safety of our students and staff will always remain our top priority! As a precaution, we will have district level staff on hand to help monitor the comings and going of our visitors during this time.”

Lumpkin County Coroner announces plans to run for reelection in 2020

LUMPKIN CO., Ga. — Lumpkin County Coroner Jim Sheppard announced to Fetch Your News Friday that he will run for reelection in 2020.
Sheppard has helped put Lumpkin County on the map during his current term as coroner by earning prestigious accolades for his outstanding performance while in office, which earned him the honor of being named the 2018 Coroner of the Year for the State of Georgia by the Georgia Coroners Association.
Sheppard told FYN that being named 2018 Coroner of the Year was, “A fantastic honor, but the cool thing about it was the partnership we’ve created with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, the Lumpkin County District Attorney’s Office, the fire department, and so many other players who were involved.”
Sheppard served 28 years with the Dekalb County Police Department and when he was asked about his current term as county corner, he expressed his deep gratitude to the community, “I’m incredibly grateful that the people of Lumpkin County elected me as their coroner…It’s not my office, I’m just the one who holds it. It’s the public’s office – I serve these folks.”
When asked what goals he wished to accomplish if he is reelected in 2020, Sheppard explained, “I’d like to work with the state somehow, some way, to expedite autopsy reports.” Sheppard further explained that he makes sure that he is available 24-7 to the families who have experienced loss. The 2020 primary election is May 19 with a runoff (if necessary) set for July 21. The general election is Nov. 3.
