UNG women’s soccer beats Young Harris, advances to PBC semis
Sports, Team FYN Sports November 13, 2019DAHLONEGA – A fifth-minute goal by Katey Derkay was all that was needed, but the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team found the net twice more as they advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals by downing Young Harris, 3-0, Tuesday night at the UNG Soccer Complex.
Derkay fired two shots in a matter of seconds to score the first goal of the night, the first of which was saved off the line by the YHC defense after the keeper was beaten by Maysoon El-Shami.
The Nighthawks were held scoreless until the 81st minute when Taylor Malasek put home her 15th goal of the year just nine minutes before El-Shami scored in the waning seconds of the match.
NOTES
- Friday will be the eighth time that UNG has appeared in the semifinal round of the PBC Tournament and the fourth in the last five years.
- North Georgia has now had 12 shutouts on the year.
- The Nighthawks are 8-0-1 at home this year.
- Other PBC quarterfinal action saw sixth-seeded Clayton State advance on penalties over third-seeded UNC Pembroke; fourth-seeded Columbus State defeated Georgia College, 1-0; and top-seeded Flagler beat Lander, 2-0.

FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman Chloe Savage was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, scoring a team-high 17 points as the No. 12 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team defeated Francis Marion, 81-53, Thursday night.
After FMU led by scores of 2-0 and 4-2, the Nighthawks went on an 8-0 run to claim the lead for good. North
Georgia led by 11 after the first quarter before extending their lead to 18 by halftime.
In the second half, North Georgia’s defense kicked in, limiting the Patriots to just eight points in the third quarter as the lead continued to grow for UNG.
NOTES
- Savage played just 20 minutes off the bench, pulling down seven boards to go with her career high 17 points;
- – Three other Nighthawks finished in double figures: Abbie Franklin with 14, Imani Arnold with 13 and Julianne Sutton with 11;
- – The Nighthawks shot just under 59 percent from the floor, assisting on 25 of their 33 made baskets. North Georgia also had 50 points in the paint in the win.

UNG women’s soccer lands 3 players on All-Region Team

DAHLONEGA – Three University of North Georgia women’s soccer players were named United Soccer Coaches All-Region Monday as announced by the association’s office.
Taylor Malasek was named to the first team after scoring 17 goals and four assists this season, good for 38 points. Her 17 goals ranks second in the Peach Belt Conference, while her 38 points is tied for third in the league. The junior from Peachtree City, Georgia, was the Elite 15 winner for the league as well as a first team All-Conference honoree. She is now eligible for All-American consideration.
Olivia Dumphy and Maysoon El-Shami each earned second team honors. Dumphy, a senior from Dawsonville, Georgia, earns her first All-Region honor of her collegiate career after bolstering a back line that had a program record 13 clean sheets. She also scored two goals and two assists on her way to a first team All-PBC selection. El-Shami, a freshman from Alpharetta, Georgia, was a first team honoree as well in the league after scoring three goals and an assist from her midfield position.

DAHLONEGA – Eren Ozer slipped a shot past the West Alabama keeper in the 80th minute and Conner Domaleski made multiple saves late as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team defeated the Tigers, 2-1, Thursday evening.
Victor Galterio got North Georgia on the board in the 20th minute as he took a pass from Michael Walsh and shot from over 30 yards out, beating the Tiger keeper just below the crossbar to put the Nighthawks up, 1-0.
Paul Florian Efang drew the Tigers level in the 65th minute off a corner kick, heading the ball into the net, but Ozer pulled the Nighthawks back in front, taking a pass from Donovan Odier and pushing it below the UWA keeper’s right arm and into the net.

Down the stretch, West Alabama pushed numbers forward and fired shots toward goal, but the defense turned them away. Domaleski was called on with 45 seconds left as he dove to his right and punched a shot away from the goal and preserving the win.
NOTES
North Georgia took just nine shots in the match, but five of those were on target. UWA fired 15 shots, five of which were on frame.
West Alabama took six corner kicks on the night compared to just one for North Georgia.

LCHS announces upcoming REACH Adult Field Day event

Leadership Lumpkin Class of 2019 and Lumpkin County High School will host the second annual REACH Adult Field Day event on March 28, 2020.
Leadership Lumpkin Class of 2019, partnered with Lumpkin County Schools, hosts the event and according to LLC’s social media page, “The mission of the Leadership Lumpkin County Class of 2019 is to have an indelible and positive impact on the Lumpkin County community by advancing the post-secondary educational opportunities for these local students…We believe that by seeking collaboration with local businesses, community members, and sponsors, we will have a progressive impact on the future of our children. held each year to raise money in order to help underprivileged Lumpkin County students excel academically and reach their future goals.”
Last year, over 53% of LC students received free or reduced lunches, 150 students were homeless, and Lumpkin County had approximately 25% of their students receive a college or technical college post-secondary education. LCHS assistant principal, Jason Lemley, told FYN, “We have a goal to raise $20,000 this year! We raised over $15,000 last year, and we are confident we can get to 20K. We already have our first sponsor, and we will be reaching out to many others soon. Last year was a great first year, and we want this to grow year after year. Belmont Abbey rolls past Nighthawks in women’s basketball

BELMONT, N.C. – The No. 9 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team fell for the first time this season in a 65-56 loss to Belmont Abbey Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 25-18 in the second quarter, the Nighthawks went on a 10-0 run to take a three-point lead, but that would be the last time UNG was in front as the Crusaders responded with a 9-0 run to finish the half and held on for the entirety of the second half.
NOTES
Julianne Sutton led UNG with 16 points, while Kara Groover notched the first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 boards.
Belmont Abbey pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, converting them for 12 second chance points.

Minor’s double-double leads UNG past West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Bailey Minor finished with his first collegiate double-double as the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team came from behind to beat West Georgia Saturday, 71-68.
The Wolves jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but North Georgia answered, tying the game up at 22 before taking the lead with seven minutes to play until halftime.
The Nighthawks held on to the lead until the middle of the second half when UWG retook the lead at 52-50 and extended the lead to as many as six with just over five minutes to play at 63-57. From there, North Georgia finished on a 14-5 run, retaking the lead at the 1:13 mark on a Minor three pointer.
NOTES
- Minor finished with 21 points and 10 boards, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from behind the arc.
- Zach Cottrell was the only other Nighthawk in double figures with 11, while nine other Nighthawks were in the scoring column.
- Ephraim Tshimanga had an impressive stat line, scoring nine points to go with eight rebounds, six assists and six steals.

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – On a rainy night on the other side of Blood Mountain, Olivia Dumphy scored two goals off free kicks to lead the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team past Young Harris, 2-0, Wednesday.
Dumphy’s first free kick came in the 20th minute when she pushed one past the keeper low and in the left corner to put UNG up, 1-0. Nearly 20 minutes later, another free kick was awarded to UNG at the top corner of the penalty box, and Dumphy curled one home inside the far post.
As the rain fell harder in the second half, North Georgia kept Young Harris at bay, allowing very few opportunities for the Mountain Lions to find a goal.
NOTES
- This was Dumphy’s second career brace, scoring twice against Converse in her second career appearance back in 2016 against Converse.
- North Georgia now has 10 clean sheets on the year, tying the program record set in 2015.
- The Nighthawks outshot YHC in the contest, 19-6.

UNG women’s basketball athlete celebrates 1,000th career point

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG’s Tamera Thorpe scored her 1,000th career point during their game against Flagler; however, the No. 20 UNG women’s basketball team fell to their opponent in overtime, 74-70.
With a jumper at the 4:15 mark in the third quarter, the senior transfer notched point No. 1,001 with her 14th point of the game to put UNG up, 43-42, at that point. From there, the two teams went back and forth before Flagler took a four-point lead with 40 seconds to play in regulation.
Flagler controlled the overtime period, though, retaking the lead right away and never relinquishing it.

UNG women’s cross-country team runners up at PCB Championship

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the UNG women’s cross-country team finished in second place on Saturday at the PCB Championship.
UNG junior, Aleah Johnson, led three All-Conference runners to second place behind Flagler Saturday morning at Redcliffe Plantation. Johnson finished in fourth place overall after running a 5K time of 18:40. UNG junior, Bree Hammond, finished in sixth place at 18:51, while sophomore, Kaylee Haake, finished in 15th at 19:09. All three earned All-Conference honors.
Flagler won the race, finishing with 46 points, followed by UNG at 60 points. Columbus State, Georgia College and Augusta rounded out the top five.
This is UNG’s fifth top-2 finish in a row after claiming runner-up honors in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

UNG freshman sets new rifling record as No. 19

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG freshman, Ricky Medina, shot an aggregate score of 1170, beating the previous aggregate scoring record by four points as the No. 19 UNG rifle team defeated the University of Alabama Saturday at the COL Raymond C. Hamilton Rifle Range. Clemson also shot in the event, but they do not count in the results, due to the Tigers competing as a club sport.
Medina tied the smallbore scoring record, firing a 584 in the discipline. He was perfect in the prone position, scoring two perfect 100 strings in the process. He coupled that with a 586 in the air rifle discipline to defeat the field by 19 points in the aggregate scoring.
UNG shot a season-high 4617 as a team, finishing just five points off the school record in aggregate, and had the top three shooters with Medina, Tobin Sanctuary and Kimberlee Nettles.
Other highlights from the event were personal records for Veronica Stanley in smallbore (567), Eric Azotea in air rifle (573) and Lucas Gilliland in air rifle (582).

Eduardo Pessoa scored twice and Eren Ozer scored late as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team earned a 4-4 draw with Tampa Thursday night at Clayton State’s Laker Field.
Tampa got things going in the 12th minute with a goal from Till Neumann, but the Nighthawks answered as Adam Farrell put home the first UNG goal of 2018 on a penalty kick in the 37th
minute. Just four minutes later, though, the Spartans regained the lead on a shot from distance to take a 2-1 lead to halftime.
After most of the second half went by scoreless, UNG evened it up with the first Pessoa goal of the night off a Prince Domafriyie pass. Tampa answered with two goals within 60 seconds of one another to take a 4-2 lead.

The Nighthawks didn’t give up, however, as Pessoa scored his second with 12 minutes left off a rebound before Eren Ozer hit a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to tie the game back up. Tampa took 12 shots in the overtime periods but could not find a fifth goal and the game ended in a draw.

Arrest Made in Threat to University Professor

(Lumpkin County, GA) August 8, 2018 – On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the University of North Georgia Police Department to assist in an investigation involving threats of violence made to a university professor.
The threats, made by email and letter, involved a threat of gun violence to the professor, other staff, and students if the professor did not resign. An extensive investigation by the GBI and the UNG Police Department resulted in the arrest of Jose Gomez, 23, of Alpharetta, for Terroristic Threats and Acts. Gomez was arrested at his Alpharetta home on August 4, 2018 by the Alpharetta Police Department.
Gomez was transported to the Lumpkin County Jail where he will face the charge in Lumpkin County Superior Court.
Top-Ranked Softball Set to Host Young Harris in Southeast Super Regional

DAHLONEGA – The No. 1 University of North Georgia softball team will take on rival Young Harris in the NCAA Division II Southeast Super Regional Thursday and Friday at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium for a chance to continue the road to a National Championship in Salem, Virginia.
The Nighthawks breezed through Southeast Regional 1 last weekend, outscoring opponents by a score of 20-3 on the weekend. North Georgia has hosted four straight Super Regionals headed into the weekend and has never played in a Super Regional away from the Hill. Young Harris needed the “if necessary” game to advance out of Southeast Regional 2 in Hickory, North Carolina, after No. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne came out of the consolation bracket and forced the seventh game. The Mountain Lions are playing in their first Super Regional in program history. The two rivals split their regular season series with YHC taking a 4-3 first game before the Nighthawks stormed back to win, 8-4, in game two. The series will start on Thursday with a 2 p.m. first pitch. Game two will be played at noon on Friday with the third game of the best-of-three series to be played at 2:30 p.m. Friday if both teams split the first two games. Daily general admission is $10 for adults (over 17) and $5 for students (age 8-17), while children under seven are admitted for free. Students of participating schools can pay the student rates by providing a valid student ID. |
