No. 20 UNG women’s soccer beats Braves, 2-1

DAHLONEGA – Dani Shartouny scored off a corner kick, providing the No. 20 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team with the game-winner in a 2-1 win over UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex.
North Georgia struck the scoreboard first as Abbie Crane found Katey Derkay in the middle of the penalty area and the freshman beat the Brave keeper to put UNG up, 1-0.
UNCP didn’t go quietly as they broke through in the 60th minute as Riley Seering earned a deflection off a failed clearance and put the ball in the net to tie the game, but the Nighthawks got the last bit of momentum as Shartouny bent a corner kick off the inside of the far post to put UNG ahead for good.
NOTES
In a very defensive game, there were only 15 combined shots taken. North Georgia took eight, five of which were on goal, while UNC Pembroke took seven with just two on frame.
The win for UNG snaps a three-match losing skid against the Braves in the all-time series. UNCP has gone over a decade without winning on the pitch in Dahlonega.

Larson announces plans to run for re-election City Council Post 6

City Councilman, Ron Larson, confirmed that he will run for re-election for the Post 6 Dahlonega City Council seat.
Larson has served as a City Councilman since 2016, and in a recent social media post he announced, “I registered today to run for re-election to the Dahlonega City Council, Post #6. Election day is November 5th. I hope I can count on your support to serve you for another 4 years (2020-2023). It has been an honor to represent the citizens of Dahlonega since January 2016. Thank you!”

Larson is also a part-time lecturer at the University of North Georgia, in the Mike Cottrell College of Business Department of Management and Marketing, where he teaches management, ethics, and strategic
planning. He is also a member of the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary, where he served as the club president from July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019. His extensive work experience includes serving as the manager of Achasta golf community, manager for The Lake Club at Reynolds Plantation, as well as several CFO positions, since 1981.
Led by Larson in 2018, the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary Club raised $20k for the assistance of the Lumpkin County Commission with the expedited installation of the Yahoola Creek Park splash pad for the benefit of Lumpkin County. During his current tenure as Post 6 City Councilman, Larson supported the installation of the Wayfare Signs around the Dahlonega City Square, the Historic Dahlonega Shuttle service, and the Dahlonega Gold Adventure All-Abilities park, as well as several other projects that have benefited Lumpkin County.

Boil water advisory in effect for Crooked Creek Subdivision

According to a press release from the Lumpkin County Water and Sewerage Authority,
“LCWSA experienced a water main break in the Crooked Creek Subdivision which caused a localized loss of system pressure. When this occurs a potential health hazard may exist in these areas of zero pressure from backflow of water of unknown quality into the water system. In order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, all Crooked Creek residents that live on High Creek Drive, White Oak Trail and Oak Springs Trail that have experienced a water outage and/or low pressures are advised to “boil” all water prior to use for drinking, cooking, or preparing baby food. The water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil. Once LCWSA has tested the water and confirmed that the water in the distribution system is safe for human consumption, LCWSA will post a message on Lumpkin County’s Website and at High Creek Drive to notify the public that the boil water advisory has been lifted. Renee VanHorn Nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

INDIANAPOLIS – A record 585 female college athletes have been nominated by NCAA member schools for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year award, and former University of North Georgia women’s soccer player Renee VanHorn is one of the athletes.
A senior from Marietta, Georgia, VanHorn graduated in the Spring of 2019 with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management. Finishing her undergraduate career with a 3.73 GPA, she was named to the PBC All-Academic Team three times and the Presidential Honor Roll three times as well, earning a gold, silver and bronze scholar. She was also awarded the Women of UNG Leadership Recognition Award in 2018 as one of the top ten student leaders at North Georgia.
On the field, she was named All-Region three times and All-Conference twice, leading the Nighthawks to a regular season championship in 2017. She was also named the PBC Player of the Week three times and the Nighthawk of the Week five times.
The nominees competed in 23 different sports across all three NCAA divisions, including 262 nominees from Division I, 131 from Division II and 192 from Division III. Multisport student-athletes account for 144 of the nominees.
Next, conferences will select up to two nominees each from the pool of school nominees. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees – 10 from each division.
The selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30 and announce the nine finalists in September. From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics then will choose the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The Top 30 honorees will be celebrated and the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual award ceremony Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.

UNG sophomore named ITA All-American

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG women’s tennis player, Adrienne Bofinger, was named ITA All-American in singles action.

Bofinger is a UNG sophomore from Germany, and she finished the season 22-3. She played every match except for one at No. 1 and was named an All-Conference first teamer in singles action, as well as the Peach Belt Tournament Singles Most Valuable Player. Bofinger makes the second player in program history to be named an ITA All-American, joining Kathrin Waidner in 2017.

Washington named 2019 recipient of the Dissinger Reed Athletic Training Scholarship

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG’s Ariauna Washington was named 2019 recipient of the Dissinger Reed Athletic Training Scholarship, during the PBC athletic trainer annual symposium in Agusta, GA.
UNC Pembroke’s Frank A. Bastone III was also a recipient, and both students will receive financial support from Dissinger Reed as they continued their studies. Washington will attend UNG’s virtual campus for a degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Health & Physical Education while working at Young Harris. 2019 is the fifth year of the scholarship program.
Washington was a member of the UNG athletic training club and sports medicine club, serving as vice president of the latter until her graduation in May. She was a CARE Consortium Assistance worker at North Georgia her senior year and has worked for Atlanta United of Major League Soccer. She also worked at Harris County High School and Dawson County High School as a part of her UNG program.

UNG pitcher named Ron Lenz National Pitcher of the Year

According to the University of Athletics Department, the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) named UNG junior pitcher, Kylee Smith, the Ron Lenz National Pitcher of the Year on Wednesday afternoon.
This is Smith’s second year earning the honor, and she is now the fourth North Georgia pitcher with this achievement and the second to do so within two consecutive seasons. This is the sixth time in 10m years that Dahlonega has had an athlete earn the award.

Smith is also the third pitcher in 13 years to earn it twice in a row; the last athlete was UNG’s Courtney Pool in 2015 and 2016. Smith was also named a D2CCA First Team All-American, her third straight honor, and she is a native of Suwanee, Georgia.
Smith finished the season with a 30-4 record and 0.73 ERA. She leads NCAA Division II in ERA and is second nationally in strikeouts (318) and hits allowed per game, third in wins, fourth in shutouts (12) and fifth in strikeouts per seven innings. She recorded four no-hitters during the year and threw a perfect game against USC Aiken on April 19.
In three seasons, Smith has quickly risen among the ranks of Peach Belt Conference all-time leaders. She is currently tied for third all-time in wins, is sixth in career strikeouts and eighth in career innings pitched.
Named the PBC Pitcher of the Week a record seven times this season, she was also named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week on April 3. She has been named the PBC Pitcher of the Week 14 times in her career.

UNG lands three on All-Region track and field team

NEW ORLEANS – Three University of North Georgia athletes have earned a spot on the 2019 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region team.
Imani Arnold earned all-region honors in the 800 meter race after finishing fourth at the Peach Belt Conference Championships. Bree Hammond was named All-Region in the steeplechase after finishing runner up at the conference meet, and Abigail Kirkland was All-Region in the 400 meter hurdles after winning her second straight PBC Championship in the event.
The top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of the region’s top-3 relay teams. A total of 1,831 honors were handed out to USTFCCCA member institutions on Monday, which included 926 to men’s programs and an additional 905 to women’s programs.

Gov. Kemp visits UNG Friday for signing ceremony

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp received a warm welcome in Lumpkin County Friday when he arrived for a bill signing ceremony in the Library Technology Center on the campus of the University of North Georgia.
State Sen. Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega), who sponsored four of the five bills the governor signed, welcomed the governor to his hometown and introduced him to those in attendance.
“Today is a big day for us,” he said. “We’ve been working a lot on some issues dealing with broadband and internet services.”
With a large number of state legislators who helped usher the bills through to passage on hand, along with many county and municipal elected officials, Kemp signed Senate Bills 2, 17, 66, 79 and 454.
Senate Bills 2,17,66 and 79 deal with the expansion of access to broadband internet service and were sponsored by Gooch. SB 454 was carried to the senate by Gooch and deals with electronic assisted bicycles.
Senate Bill 2 allows Georgia’s 41 EMCs which represent about 4.5 million rural customers to get into the broadband business and sell internet services.
An important question that has yet to be answered is how many EMCs will participate.
“I’ll stand here today and be the first one to confess, I don’t know that all 41 will ever get into internet services,” Gooch said, “But I believe this will allow them the opportunity to do so.”
Wednesday, April 24 marked the governor’s 100th day in office and he reflected of some of his administration’s early accomplishments.
“Over and over again, I promised to keep families safe, to put hard working Georgians first and I think that is exactly what we have done with these pieces of legislation today and with these great legislators’ help who are here today.”
Kemp said the 2019 and 2020 budgets are “reflection of the values of our state and our priorities for the future. We have fully funded public 0education for the second year in a row. We have given teachers, counselors and others a historic pay raise this year. We’ve invested $70 million in school security grants, $30,000 for every public school in the K through 12 system. We also doubled funding for mental health services in our high schools.”
The governor also pointed to state investments in public safety. “We created a task force within the GBI to undermine drug cartels, gangs and human and sex trafficking.”
Kemp thanked legislators for “stepping up to the plate” and adding $20 million to the budget for hurricane relief for farmers in south and southwest Georgia “while we wait on those in Washington D.C. to do their part to put people ahead of politics and pass the daggum disaster relief bill.”

UNG splits DH with Young Harris, wins series

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – No. 9 University of North Georgia split a Peach Belt doubleheader with Young Harris Saturday to clinch the conference series.
In Game 1, the Mountain Lions scored first in the bottom of the first on a Zavier Lushington solo homer to put YHC up, 1-0. Young Harris continued to put runs up, scoring three in the fourth on two RBI singles. YHC scored two unearned runs in the sixth before plating their final three runs in the seventh to earn the 9-0 win.
North Georgia had multiple chances to put up runs in the game, leaving 14 runners on base in the game.
The UNG bats came alive in Game 2 as the Nighthawks soared to an 11-2 win.
The fireworks started with a three-run blast from Conner Corbitt in the second inning.
YHC answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI groundout to cut the lead to two.
After a RBI groundout for UNG pushed the lead back to three, Young Harris used a solo shot to cut the lead to two again through four innings.
In the seventh, North Georgia got two homers, first a two-run bomb from Crews Taylor before a solo shot by Chase Sudduth in the next at-bat. Sudduth brought home another run in the ninth on a RBI double before a RBI groundout brought home the 11th run.
NOTES
Sudduth was 4-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader.
North Georgia had 16 hits in the second game of the day, their second most in league play this season.

The Nighthawks will take on Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday with first pitch set for 5 p.m.
UNG men’s tennis team claims Peach Belt win

DAHLONEGA, GA
According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the UNG men’s tennis team claimed a big Peach Belt Conference win Thursday, as they took out No. 13 Georgia College. The Conference was held at the UNG Tennis Complex, located at Yahoola Creek. The win bumped UNG 7-1 on the season, and 2-0 in league play.
During the doubles tournaments, the Nighthawks won the No. 3 and No. 2 spots. Singles was more challenging, as the Bobcats came out fighting, resulting in a 2-1 loss for UNG. The Nighthawks will travel to Orlando for a four-game road trip.
