Alice Jean Anderson Butler, age 87, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018. She was born in Lumpkin County on September 4, 1931.
Alice worked as a food inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she retired in January of 1991. She was of the Christian faith and was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Dahlonega, GA. Alice spent many years of her life traveling the country with her husband of almost thirty years, D.L. Butler. She was friends with all and never met a stranger. She loved crafts and loved to bake. She made everyone that entered her home feel welcomed.
Alice was preceded in death by her mother and father Joe B. and Mary Davis Anderson; husband D.L. Butler; daughter Patricia “Pat” Robinson Grizzle; brothers Doyle and J.B. Anderson; sisters Cona Ravan, Verbie Butler and Bonnie Burgess.
She is survived by her grandson Lamar Grizzle and his wife Mandy Grizzle; great-grandsons Jared and Daniel Grizzle; great-granddaughter Allison Grizzle Honeycutt and her husband Chris Honeycutt; great-great-grandchildren Dylan and Rylee Honeycutt; nieces Doris Burzynski and Beth Elliott; nephews Jerry Burgess and Ronnie Anderson; several great nieces and nephews; a special care-giver of six years, Karen McKee; and Purple Gunter, who was like a daughter.
The family would like to thank Northeast Georgia Hospice and the Resting Nest of Gainesville for being so helpful and loving to Alice in her last days.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, November 17, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate and a eulogy will be given by Mrs. Karen McKee. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.

New JROTC and Science facility coming to Lumpkin County High School

DAHLONEGA, GA
The Lumpkin County Board of Education reviewed preliminary blueprints of the new JROTC and Science facility during the monthly Work Session on Monday, August 13.
Representatives from RLR Architects and Carroll Daniel Construction presented drawings for the proposed facility, which will replace the temporary trailers currently used for JROTC purposes. Dewayne Roof, with RLR Architects, explained that the ROTC building will be two-stories tall, equipped with elevator and staircase access. Entry to the building will be located near the high school, and a weather canopy will cover the walkway between the two entrances.
The first level will contain two ROTC classrooms with a shared office, observation windows and a restroom. It will also have a centralized walk-through uniform storage area and laundry area. Lumpkin County High School Logistics Specialist, Steve Hawk, said the central location and design of the uniform storage will provide easy access to uniforms, as well as simplifying the overall process. There will also be separate male/female dressing rooms, complete with restrooms, and a supply storage room with roll up doors large enough for vehicle unloading.
After seeing the ground-floor layout, Hawk expressed his gratitude to the board and the design team, “I’m really impressed with the drawings. Anything we’ve suggested, they’ve put in there…after 15 years of working out of trailers, it’s a great idea.”
The second level will contain the armory storage area, will also feature what JROTC Senior Army Instructor, Jeff Moran, described as “a fifteen fifteen lane, state of the art, electronic rifle range” that will be something that they can, “add and develop not just excellent, but championship shooters.” An electronic equipment storage room and multipurpose room will also be located on the second floor. The roof will provide access to a two-story rappelling wall, complete with a cushioned landing located area at its base. Access to the rappelling wall will be secured from non ROTC students. The science building will a single-story building containing science classrooms and storage.
Lumpkin County JROTC Army Instructor, Ron Fugate, stated that he did know know of any other high school in Georgia that was equipped with an electronic rifle range; he also explained that it would be the “latest and greatest” in the marksmanship program; he too, expressed deep gratitude.
Lumpkin County High School Superintendent, Dr. Robert Brown, estimated the cost of the project to be around 3.2 to 3.4 million dollars for the total cost, “we will benefit $600,000 for the actual construction on the facility. The rest will be “local commitment and SPLOST funding,” Brown explained.
The construction on the project is estimated for November 2018.

Many downtown businesses will close on 9.14 due to rally

DAHLONEGA, GA
The list of local businesses on the historic Dahlonega square that will be closed on September 14 has steadily increased as the impending rally approaches.
Some of the first businesses to announce closing on the 14th are, Spirits Tavern, Gustavo’s, and Knuckles Sandwich Shop. Spirits posted on their reason for closing on their Facebook page, which was later shared by Knuckles “Spirits Tavern will be closed on this day (Saturday, September 14). The safety of our employees and guests are our highest priority. The revenue lost is not worth acknowledging hate of any kind.”
Since then, several other businesses have taken to social media to announce their closing on 9.14, including Mayor Sam Norton’s business, the Picnic Cafe and Dessertery. According to Picnic Cafe’s Facebook page, “It’s not always about the dollar. Family values and a sense of community are what most businesses on the Square are about here in Dahlonega. We will close Saturday, September 14th and encourage others to be home with their family. We will reopen the day after these disruptive protests and counter-protests. We look forward to seeing you on Make-Up Monday (9/16/19).”
Crimson Moon told FYN that they will be closed during the day and open only to host the concert scheduled for Saturday night. Capers on the Square, Brad Walker Pottery, Paul Thomas Chocolates, The Dahlonega General Store, Jolie Day Spa, Walking Ghost Tours, and Studio Jewelers are amongst the businesses that will also be closed. The Dahlonega Farmer’s Market is also canceled for 9.14.
While many downtown businesses will be closed, there are some who will remain open, or open later Saturday evening. This includes The Fudge Factory and Outlaw Jerky will open at 4 p.m. on Saturday, 19 Degrees North, Pueblos, Grapevines, Johnny B’s, Naturally Georgia, Giggle Monkey Toys, Shenanigan’s Irish Pub, and Bourbon Street Grille, (downstairs dining only) will all remain open.
Deb Rowe, owner of Shenanigan’s and Bourbon Street Grille, explained that they will remain open, but the upstairs dining area and balcony area of Bourbon Street will be closed. Patrons will still have the option to dine downstairs at Bourbon Street. Both businesses expressed support and appreciation not for the rally, but for the many law enforcement officers and emergency personnel who will be diligently working to keep everyone safe during the rally,
“Shenanigans and Bourbon Street will be open on Saturday 9/14, offering our employee discount of 30% to all emergency personnel. We are aware that many businesses are taking a different approach, and that’s just as understandable. We will stand in the confidence of our law enforcement to monitor and protect, as well as being steadfast with safety and security ourselves. In addition to our local emergency personnel, there are several hundreds of additional officers coming to serve our community and it is our hope that after a contained and uneventful demonstration, we will be able to serve them in appreciation of their service to us all.”

Mrs. Janie Holman, age 78, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2019.
Mrs. Holman was born in Crawfordville, GA on December 19, 1940 to the late Jimmie B. and Dona Frances Wilson Shealey. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband James M. Holman, daughter Jamie Holman, son James Holman, great-grandson Hunter Holman, and sister Marion Holbrook. Mrs. Holman was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Holman enjoyed her trips to the casino, ceramics, cross-word books, and the outdoors.
Survivors include her children Dona Holman, Dawsonville, Cynthia LaFrance, Dahlonega, Patty and Lewis Sullens, Dahlonega, and Patricia S. and James Lewis, Cedar Bluff, AL; grandchildren James “J.C.” Holman, Kimberly Holman, Alex Bowen, Jackson Sullens, Winston Scott, Gregory Scott, Wesley Scott, and Scarlet Scott; three great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law Carol and Carl Hudgins, Granbury, TX; brother Wesley Shealey, Jackson, TN; sisters Mikie Thomas, Eufaula, AL, and Rebecca Schmidt, Jackson, TN: several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Golden Lee Chester: Obituary

Mr. Golden Lee Chester, age 74, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2019.
Lee was born in Lumpkin County on December 18, 1944 to the late William Raymond “Tug” and Essie Lou McClure Chester. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved grandson Tyler Woody. Lee was a hard-working man and honorably served his country in the US Army. During his service, Lee was an aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he retired from Mohawk Industries after 42 years and was a poultry and cattle farmer his entire life.
Lee never met a stranger and was always there to offer a helping hand to anyone. He enjoyed riding the roads, old cars, making moonshine and being a member of the Dairy Queen Breakfast Club. He loved and faithfully provided for his family. He was a proud “Papa” to 11 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Lee was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-laws Karen and Gordon Woody, Hannah and David Grizzle, Janet and Patrick Jackson; son Jeffrey Chester; sons and daughters-in-laws Michael and Ashley Chester, and Matthew and Meghan Chester, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Allison Woody Head, Kristen Woody, Logan Woody, Emily Grizzle, Ethan Grizzle, Trey Grizzle, Patrick Jackson, Kate Jackson, Keira Jackson and McCall Chester; sisters Eva Collier, Ora Roland and Era Rider; sister and brother-in-law Ola and Jerry Davis, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate and Mrs. Kathy Pitchford will provide the eulogy. Interment will follow in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors.

MSgt Vernon Elbert Peters, age 93, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 23, 2019.
MSgt Peters was born in Columbus, GA on April 24, 1926 to the late John Benjamin and Isabel Abercrombie Peters. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law Leon McCoy and Lillie Mae Peters; brothers Glen Peters and Clarence Peters; sister and brother-in-law Inez and Homer Keith; and brother-in-law Andy Clark. MSgt Peters honorably served his country in the Air Force and retired after 22 years of dedicated service. He then went on to retire from RTC Refrigeration Company after working for 18 years. He attended Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife Betty Jane Peters; daughter Teresa Dewey; grandchildren Russell Pace, Jonathan Dewey and Shelby Dewey; brother and sister-in-law B.R. and Carol Peters; sister Frances Clark; sister-in-law Bessie Peters; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Chestatee Artists Group announces new Folk School

DAHLONEGA, GA
The Dahlonega Chestatee Artists Group has opened registration for their upcoming Folk School from now until September 27, 2019. The first classes of the Folk School will be held the weekend of October 11 through October 13, beginning Friday evening at 7p.m. until 9p.m. and ending Sunday around 11:30a.m.

There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, September 12 for those interested in learning more about the mission of Chestatee Artists, the Folk School, and to meet the instructors. The meeting will be at 6p.m., in the United Community Bank Community Room.
According to their website, a variety of categories will be offered to the public, “Our Folk School classes will be held in our beautiful city of Dahlonega twice a year with some of the finest instructors in many exciting categories. Leatherwork, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, wire wrapping, jewelry making, weaving and more.”

UNG set to open new Blue Ridge campus fall of 2020

The University of North Georgia is a year away from opening their newest campus, located in the Fannin County mountains in Blue Ridge, GA, according to the UNG Press.
The campus stands alone from the current Blue Ridge campus and is located off GA 515. According to UNG’s website, the funding the for the new campus comes from the state’s 2019 fiscal year budget, “Georgia Speaker of the House of Representatives David Ralston helped secure $5.5 million in state funds for the new Blue Ridge Campus in the 2019 fiscal year budget. Ralston, a UNG alumnus, represents Georgia District 7, including Fannin County, in the General Assembly.”
Once complete, the facility will be equipped with “science lab space, a computer lab, and spaces for students to gather and study outside of classrooms.” So far, the main roads have been paved, and utilities have been installed and will be tied into city mains. Site grading has begun, and construction on the building itself should begin in August. The campus is scheduled to be completed in time for classes beginning fall semester 2020.

Mr. James Dean Boyd, age 61, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2019.
James was born in Fulton County on September 23, 1957 to the late Terry Dean and Christine Lingerfelt Boyd. He was of the Baptist faith. James was retired from many years of construction and maintenance work.
He is survived by his fiancée Serena Welch, Dahlonega and his brothers Kenny Boyd, Ronald Boyd and William Ray Boyd, all of Woodstock.
James’ wishes were to be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. J.W. “Cotton” Harkins, age 91, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2019.
Mr. Harkins was born in Suches, GA on August 6, 1927 to the late Ben and Alice Stover Harkins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Bertha Harkins, son Tony Harkins, and daughter Beverly Harkins. Mr. Harkins was a member of Harmony Church of God. He was retired from the University of North Georgia. Mr. Harkins loved to fish, garden, and coon hunt.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law Teresa and Roger Cantrell, and Gale and Larry Smith, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Cody and Aliciah Wymer, Brooke and Matthew Gillespie, James and Daina Askea, all of Dahlonega, Mark and Elisha Santiago, Arizona, Jennifer Hogan, Colorado Springs, CO, Melissa and Joey Evans, Gainesville, and Chastity Cantrell, Dahlonega; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Friday, June 21, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Dalton Delozier and the Rev. Chad Stewart will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery in Suches, GA. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Janice Prater Foster, age 77, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, June 14, 2019.
Mrs. Foster was born in Hall County on December 29, 1941 to the late Lonnie and Beuny Whitmire Prater. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Melba Rea and brother Jerry Prater. Mrs. Foster was a member of Cavender Creek Baptist Church. She worked for many years at Butler’s Five and Dime Store. Mrs. Foster also worked at Torrington (KOYO) and then later she retired from Walmart. Her grandchildren called her “Nana”. Mrs. Foster loved to sing in her church choir and she was a member of “Cabin Fever”, a Bluegrass Band which she started.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Jimmy and Brenda Fortner, Dahlonega, and Johnny and Tammy Fortner, Cleveland; grandchildren Kelsey and Dan Davis, Kelly and T.J. Alexander, and Tyler Fortner; great-grandchildren Natalie Harris, Abigail Davis, and Ella Alexander; brothers and sisters-in-law Benny and Carol Prater, and Gary and Gloria Prater; brothers Danny Prater, and Stanley Prater; sister Doris Prater Busbee; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Monday, June 17, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate.
