UNG junior breaks record for career steals-mark

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, Ephraim Tshimanga broke the UNG career steals-mark, as the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team earned its first win of the season over Erskine, 89-64.

Tshimanga had six steals on the night, breaking the record held by former UNG point-guard Travis Core, who now has 113 career steals.

North Georgia jumped out quickly against the Flying Fleet, scoring the first 11 points of the contest to take the lead for good. The Nighthawks led by as many as 31 points en route to the 25 point win.

UNG women’s soccer seniors announced to All-Peach Belt Conference team

AUGUSTA, Ga. –

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG women’s soccer seniors Renee VanHorn and Asa Thorsen were picked to the All-Peach Belt Conference First Team. The announcement was made at the tournament banquet on Thursday night.

VanHorn finished in fourth place in the league with 12 goals on the season. She added three assists as well to total 27 points. Six of her 12 goals were game winners.

Thorsen put two goals in the back of the net and assisted on three others this season as a key player in the midfield for the Nighthawks. VanHorn and Thorsen were two of just four players on UNG’s side to play and start in all 16 matches this season.

Megan Sabol tied for third in top five finish

A press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department explained that UNG junior, Megan Sabol, is now tied for third place after the UNG women’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury held on Tuesday.

Sabol scored a one-under 71, and the Nighthawks broke the single round scoring record by eight strokes  in the final round with a two-over 290.

Sabol’s two-under 142 put her in a tie for third and All-Tournament honors, as well as the second best 36-hole score in program history. She finished two strokes behind Lenoir-Rhyne’s Abbey Hartsell for the lead. Sabol finished with eight birdies in the event, including birdieing three of the four par fives on the course in the final round.

The Nighthawks posted a 596 in the event, which is the best 36-hole score in program history, beating the Battle at Old South result from earlier this season by five strokes.

Jordyn Sims also scored, with a two-under round of 70, which tied her for second all-time in a single round with Sabol and Karson Stone. Sims had three birdies in Tuesday’s round to improve 11 strokes from the first to the second round.

DAHLONEGA – For the first time since 2015, the No. 1 University of North Georgia softball team is headed to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship after coming back to eliminate Young Harris, 2-1, in the Southeast Super Regional Fridayafternoon at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.

The Mountain Lions struck first in the fourth, using three singles to scratch the game’s first run across the plate. North Georgia got runners in scoring position in three innings without plating a run prior to finally scoring in the sixth.

With a 2-2 count to lead off the sixth, Kaylyn Anthony blasted a solo shot that never got higher than seven feet off the ground, just clearing the fence to tie the game, 1-1. North Georgia took the lead for good as Hobby Gregory came sliding into home on a double steal to give UNG the margin needed to advance in the tournament. Young Harris got a runner to third in the final frame, but a groundout to senior Brittany Gilliam clinched the win, allowing the celebration to begin.

NOTES
– Kylee Smith earned her 35th win of the year, surrendering just one run off five hits and three walks while punching out eight.

– The one-run lead for YHC was the first time that North Georgia had trailed in a game since the regular season finale against Flagler when UNG trailed, 1-0, for a half inning before the Nighthawks scored four in the next half inning.

– Shelby Hammontree led UNG at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

– With the win, North Georgia officially wins the Battle of Blood Mountain for the fifth straight year, 6.0-4.0.

The Nighthawks will head to Salem, Virginia, for the 2018 NCAA Division II Softball Championship and will play on Thursday in the first game. The NCAA Softball Committee will reseed the eight teams prior to releasing the matchups.

Smith, Johns Named Top 10 Finalists For NFCA Player of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of North Georgia sophomore pitchers Amber Johns and Kylee Smith were named top 10 finalists for the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award as announced by the NFCA national office Tuesday afternoon.

Johns, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Georgia, is a perfect 18-0 in 29 appearances this season. She has struck out 112 batters in 110 innings with batters hitting just .146 against her this season. She has the third-best ERA in Division II at 0.76.

Smith, a sophomore from Suwanee, Georgia, is 33-1 in 39 games in the circle, compiling three saves as well. She has the second most strikeouts in the nation with 303 punch outs to just 39 walks. With batters hitting just .128 against her this season, her ERA is the second best in the nation at 0.66.

This is the fourth season in a row that UNG has had a student-athlete on the top 10 list and the second consecutive year that two Nighthawks have earned the distinction. The award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievement among softball student-athletes throughout Division II. North Georgia’s Courtney Poole was the inaugural winner of the award.

The award winner will be announced on June 4.

Three Baseball Players Named All-Conference

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Three University of North Georgia baseball players were named to the Peach Belt’s All-Conference teams Thursday night at a banquet prior to the start of the PBC Baseball Tournament at Flagler College. Andres Perez was named to the first team, while Cade Heil and Parker Morrison were named to the second team.

Perez, a sophomore out of Duluth, Georgia, leads the PBC in homers with 20 headed into the conference tournament. His 20 bombs is also tied for the UNG single season record. He has caught all 50 games for the Nighthawks as well.

Heil, a freshman from Suwanee, Georgia, has been the Friday starter for the Nighthawks this season, going 6-7 this season with 55 strikeouts across over 93 innings on the mound. Morrison, a redshirt freshman from Cumming, Georgia, leads North Georgia in appearances with 30, garnering a 4-1 record with 10 saves.

The Nighthawks will take on UNC Pembroke tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the PBC Tournament. UNG will also take on Lander and Georgia College in pool play on Saturday with the winner of the pool advancing to the championship game Sunday.

Late Rally Falls Short as No. 9 Cougars Hold On To Beat Baseball, 3-2

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia baseball team had the game tying run on second base with two away but could not bring him home as No. 9 Columbus State held on Saturday night for a 3-2 win at Bob Stein Stadium.

The Cougars struck first in the second inning as Gunar Drinnen singled to plate Robert Brooks and give CSU a 1-0 lead. Columbus State extended its lead to 3-0 on a Drinnen two-run homer in the fourth before the Nighthawks struck back.

With one out in the fourth, Chase Sudduth singled up the middle and moved over to second for Conner Corbitt to double off the wall in left center, plating the Nighthawks’ first run of the night.

From there, both Perez Knowles and Jack Fleming, on in relief, settled in and didn’t allow a single run. The Nighthawks put up a rally in the ninth inning on Cougar closer Payton Phillips, starting with back-to-back one out walks to Andres Perezand Corbitt. After a Cougar error allowed a run to score, the Cougars were able to escape the threat with the win.

NOTES
– Sudduth, Corbitt and Nick Clarno each had hits for North Georgia in the game. Eight of the nine Cougars in the starting lineup had hits.

– The Nighthawks turned three double plays in the game to keep Columbus State at bay. All three were inning ending.

– North Georgia will either be the fifth or sixth seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, depending on the result of tomorrow’s game.

The Nighthawks and Cougars will wrap up the regular season with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Bob Stein Stadium. Fans are asked to get to their seats by 1:40 p.m. for Senior Day festivities as UNG honors Logan Burt, Dallas Deavers, Fleming and Steven Tomlinson prior to first pitch.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE: Nighthawks Punch Ticket to Arizona

WINGATE, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the No. 27 University of North Georgia women’s tennis team will be headed to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Surprise, Arizona, after upsetting No. 15 Wingate, 5-2, Sunday afternoon.

After dropping the first match of the day in doubles, the Nighthawks took the early 2-1 advantage with wins by Vaishali Jorge and Lexa Loden at No. 2 doubles before a 9-8 tiebreak win for Felicia Baratta and Holly Bennett at the top flight.

From there, the Nighthawks dominated the singles scene. Adrienne Bofinger, fresh off of the match-winning point in the first round, cruised past her opponent, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Bennett captured the fourth point for UNG, winning in straight sets at No. 3, setting the stage for Jorge to win at No. 4 singles to send North Georgia forward in the tournament.

This is the first time a North Georgia tennis team has advanced past the regional round.

From here, the Nighthawks will travel to Surprise, Arizona, for the NCAA Championships. The remaining 16 teams will be put into a new bracket with the top four teams seeded and the remaining 12 put into the bracket via a blind draw.

Johns, Smith Named Finalists For Schutt Sports/NFCA National Player of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of North Georgia softball players Amber Johns and Kylee Smith were named finalists for the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award as announced by the association Mondayafternoon.

Smith, a sophomore from Suwanee, Georgia, was a top 25 member last year on her way to becoming a finalist for the NFCA’s Freshman of the Year. She was named to the Watch List prior to the start of the season and was one of just 10 members of the 50-player watch list to be in the running for the award. Smith is 26-1 with two saves on the year. She leads the nation in strikeouts with 245.

Johns, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Georgia, is making her first appearance on the national list in her career. This season, she is 16-0 with 102 punchouts. Johns has given up just 13 runs across 95.2 innings of work inside the circle.

The Top 10 finalists will be announced on May 15 with the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year revealed on June 4.

The award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievement among softball student-athletes throughout Division II. UNG’s Courtney Poole was the inaugural winner of the award.

Alex Grant Named PBC Player of the Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. – For the first time in his collegiate career, University of North Georgia men’s soccer player Alex Grant was named the Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer player of the week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Grant scored three goals with one assist in two games for the Nighthawks. The junior from Wolverhampton, England, scored a goal and added an assist as UNG downed Clayton State 5-2 on the road, locking up the No. 3 seed in the PBC Tournament in the process. He followed that by scoring both UNG goals in a 3-2 loss to North Greenville in the regular-season finale on Saturday.

The three goals give him nine on the season, ranking him fourth in the league through the regular season. He is also tied for ninth in assists and is fourth in the league with 22 points.

Grant and the Nighthawks will host the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinals at the UNG Soccer Complex tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. as they welcome the No. 6 seed USC Aiken Pacers to Dahlonega.

Men’s Tennis Shoots Past Emmanuel, 7-2, in Season Opener

DAHLONEGA – After a doubles sweep by the Nighthawks, the University of North Georgia men’s tennis team coasted to a 7-2 win over Emmanuel in the 2017-18 season opener Wednesday at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

All three doubles teams ran past their Lion opponents by scores of 8-3. Mark Laishley earned the first singles point at No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score to put UNG up, 4-0.

After Emmanuel won at No. 3 singles, Tim Kiehl finished his match at No. 2 singles in straight sets to clinch the win. Ryan Gaskin won at No. 1 singles in a three-set come-from-behind match to earn UNG’s sixth point of the day.

The match served as the lone event counting toward the overall record for North Georgia. The Nighthawks will next play on the road at Belmont Abbey on February 3.

Women’s Golf Finishes Alone in Second at LeeAnn Noble Memorial

DAHLONEGA – Megan Sabol finished in a tie for third individually as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team placed second in the Fourth Annual LeeAnn Noble Memorial at Achasta Golf Club. Lee set a new 18- (290) and 36-hole (586) record on the final day to finish as the tournament champion.

“I thought we played quite well,” said head women’s golf coach Leigh Anne Hunter. “I was very happy to get some wins over some regional opponents which are crucial at moving us up in the region rankings as we push toward the postseason.”

The Nighthawks (605) finished one stroke ahead of Young Harris (606) for the tournament runner-up. North Georgia’s two-round score tied the program’s best set earlier this season at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational. Lenoir-Rhyne (617) and Lincoln Memorial (620) rounded out the top-five teams in the tournament.

Sabol shot a three-over-par 147 in the tournament, finishing four strokes back of Lee’s Haverly Harrold for the individual title. Carson Roberts finished in a three-way tie for fifth at 148.

North Georgia will next compete at the Newberry Fall Invitational on October 30-31 in Elgin, S.C. That tournament will serve as the end to the fall season.

Men’s Soccer Shuts Out USC Aiken, 3-0

AIKEN, S.C. – Carl Ludwig Eriksson had a say in all three goals as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team earned a shutout against USC Aiken in a 3-0 win Saturday evening.

Eriksson had two assists and a goal in the match. His first assist came in the 13th minute when he crossed a ball in to Gabriel Garcia to get an early 1-0 lead.

The junior from Sweden scored his goal in the 24th minute after he took a pass from Matheus Abreu and scored on a wide open net. The Nighthawks final goal came from Michael Akin in the 81st minute.

NOTES
– Eriksson’s four-point performance is a career-high, surpassing his three-point performance from last season’s matchup against Young Harris.

– Junior Matt Sharman had 10 saves in the match. The double-digit save match is the second of the season.

– North Georgia is now 6-6 overall and 3-2 in Peach Belt play.

The Nighthawks will return to Dahlonega to host Georgia Southwestern on Operation Nighthawks of Honor and Spirit Night. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Malasek Nets Two Goals in Women’s Soccer 5-1 Win Over Lander

DAHLONEGA – Freshman Taylor Malasek had her first career two-goal match as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team defeated Lander, 5-1, Wednesday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks improved to 4-2-0 in Peach Belt Conference play with the win.

“After they scored to go 1-1, we were able to put our foot back on the glass,” said head women’s soccer coach Chris Adams. “I thought we played a fantastic game in the second half.”

Malasek scored the match’s opening goal in the 11th minute off a deflection from Michelle Allen‘s cross into the box that fell right to her feet. Lander’s Sara Flores scored three minutes later to even the match at 1-1.

Both teams traded shots throughout the next 30 minutes until Rosie Embley bent a shot just under the crossbar in the 43rd minute from 25 yards out to put UNG up, 2-1, going to halftime.

After a foul was drawn in the box, Malasek put home a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to extend the Nighthawk lead. The final two goals were scored by Allen in the 78th and Jordyn Missel in the 87th, both being their first goal of the season.

NOTES
– With the win, UNG tied the all-time series with Lander at 7-7. The Nighthawks have now won three in a row against the Bearcats.

– Missel’s goal came just nine seconds after stepping on the field. The goal was also the first of her career.

– North Georgia took five shots in the second half, three of which found the back of the net.

The Nighthawks will host No. 23 Limestone in non-conference play on Saturday, October 7. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Nighthawks staff assistant coach

DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia head softball coach Mike Davenport has announced that Sage Woodham has joined the Nighthawk staff as an assistant coach following a one-year stint as the pitching coach at Georgia Tech.

Prior to 2017, Woodham spent seasons at Southern Arkansas, where she coached two All-Great American Conference pitchers, one all-region pitcher, and the GAC Newcomer of the Year and Hero Sports Division II Newcomer of the Year in LHP Kimmy Beasley. In 2016, SAU was named the NFCA’s Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

In 2016, the Lady Muleriders reached their first ever national ranking and reached the NCAA Division II World Series semi-finals, finishing No. 4 in the country.

Prior to joining the Lady Muleriders, Woodham spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the North Alabama. In her time at UNA, Woodham coached three All-Gulf South Conference pitchers including the 2014 GSC Pitcher of the Year and Daktronics All-Region second-teamer, Hillary Carpenter. She helped the Lions’ pitching staff post team ERAs of 2.49 in 2014 (1st in GSC) and 3.06 in 2013 (4th in GSC).

Before joining the staff at North Alabama, Woodham served as graduate assistant coach for two seasons at Augusta State. While at ASU, Woodham worked with the pitchers and helped the team notch a 2.44 earned run average during the 2012 season. In 2012, Woodham received a master’s degree in Kinesiology from ASU.

Woodham was a standout pitcher for the University of Alabama-Huntsville softball team from 2006-09. While playing at UAH, Woodham was a two-time All-American, and during her career, she won 91 games and posted a 1.22 ERA with 607 strikeouts. Woodham also helped lead the Chargers to a national runner-up finish in the 2009 NCAA Division II World Series.

She was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Decade in the 2000’s.
