DAHLONEGA – Matt Sharman made six saves in regulation, but No. 19 Lander found the match’s lone goal in the second minute of overtime to beat the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team, 1-0, Wednesday night. The Nighthawks drop back to .500 overall and in Peach Belt action with the loss.
Both teams traded blows in the first 90 minutes of play as the goalkeepers were tested throughout regulation. North Georgia threw five shots on goal, while the Bearcats put six on frame. Robbie Young put home the game-winning shot in the 92nd minute of play off a pass from Oliver Brock to earn the golden goal victory. UNG Student Arrested for Filing False Claim of Rape at Reservoir

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office deputies today charged University of North Georgia student Rebekah Lim with filing a false police report, claiming she had been raped on a hiking trail near the Dahonega reservoir.
On May 24th, Lim called Lumpkin County 911 and claimed she had been raped. After meeting with Lim several officers, a K9 unit, and an investigator responded to the Reservoir Trail, searching for evidence and suspects. The following day, they searched the trail again but no evidence was discovered.
Investigators continued to work on the case over the next several days and could not locate any evidence suspects or witnesses to indicate the crime had taken place.
On the contrary, evidence showed that the crime could not possibly have taken place as Lim alleged. Out of an abundance of caution and public safety, Investigators continued working on the case for the following week, approaching the case from all possible angles. During the investigation, video surveillance cameras on the square of the City of Dahlonega and UNG campus were viewed, as well as Lim’s cell phone logs.
All evidence gained during the investigation showed that Ms. Lim had falsely reported that she had been raped on the Reservoir Trails and further indicated she was never at or on the trail during the time she alleged the crime had occurred.
Investigators presented the evidence before the Magistrate Court Judge and a warrant for Lim’s arrest was signed. Subsequently, Lim was arrested at her apartment and charged with False Statements (Felony). She is currently at Lumpkin County Detention Center and a bond has not been set at this time.

Tusculum outlasts Nighthawks in overtime, 60-57

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Trailing by nine with just over six minutes to play, the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team fought back to force overtime, but the Nighthawks could not finish the comeback as they fell to Tusculum, 60-57, in overtime Saturday night in the UNG Convocation Center.
The Nighthawks finished the second half on a 13-4 to force overtime where UNG took the early lead on a Bailey Minor lay-in with four minutes to play in the extra period. The Pioneers took the lead shortly after, but Carrod Watson got a basket to tie the game at 55 before Tusculum hit a three pointer that gave them the lead for good.
NOTES
– North Georgia led early in the first half by as many as six before TU went on a run to take the lead. The Pioneers led for the majority of the contest, tallying over 24 minutes with the lead.
– Minor led UNG in the scoring column, tallying 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. Watson also finished with double figures, scoring 10 points.
– UNG held the Pioneers to the second-lowest offensive rebound total of their season with 19. Tusculum is the No. 2 offensive rebounding team in the nation, averaging 22 offensive boards a contest.
NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will host Lee on Wednesday, December 4 with a noon tip. The game will serve as 5th Graders Day Out.
Merck finishes 4th, named to All-Tournament team

MEMPHIS, Tn. – Tanner Merck finished with an even-par 72 in the final round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Preview to claim All-Tournament honors Tuesday with a fourth place finish as the University of North Georgia men’s golf team finished sixth in the field.
Merck finished with three birdies on the day, shooting under par on the fifth, eighth and 11th holes on his way to a 54-hole total of 1-under 215. The senior has earned All-Tournament honors in back-to-back tournaments.
The Nighthawks finished eight shots out of the top five while No. 2 West Florida defeated No. 16 Lincoln Memorial in a playoff to win the tournament. Carson-Newman finished in third place, followed by No. 20 Columbus State and Young Harris.
Grant Crowell also finished inside the top 20, coming in at a tie for 17th place with a 5-over 221 after a final-round 72.
The Nighthawks have wrapped up the fall slate of events and will now prepare to take to the course again in the spring.

American Patriot Rally is mainly peaceful

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The American Patriot rally in Dahlonega ended without violence or property damage today although one person was arrested hours before the rally started and two were arrested during the rally.
University of North Georgia police arrested Joshua Parker for possession of a knife on campus at approximately 10:30 a.m. Counter demonstrators Rachel Scott and Ronald Watson were arrested for inciting a riot after they snuck into the staging area reserved for the event organizers.

Aside from that, the event was uneventful. Rally organizers sang the Star Spangled Banner, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, paid tribute to President Donald Trump then departed.
There was one staging area for the organizers, another for counter protesters and another for the media. Each was cordoned off by steel barriers backed by a row of police officers in full riot gear.
The staging area for the organizers was in front of the Welcome Center. On the other side of the Dahlonega Gold Museum members of Antifa and the Socialist Coalition of North Georgia (SSCNC) carried signs and sang Viet Nam-era protest songs.

An overwhelming show of force by law enforcement officers made it crystal clear there would be no violence on this day. Antifa and SCNG were outnumbered 3 to 1.
Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said nearly 600 police officers from 36 local, state and federal agencies kept the event peaceful.
After the event, Jarrard expressed his gratitude to officers who came from as far away as Savannah.
“It just goes to show you how law enforcement officers respond when they are needed in another area. All I did was send out a simple email and I immediately got a reply that they were on the way.”
Mayor Sam Norton also expressed his appreciation.“I am humbled by this outpouring of support from our local, state, and federal partners during these events,” he said. “I would also like to thank all the residents and local business owners who sent messages of support to our officers. That is a true reflection of the people who live in our small town.”
There were three distinct winners at the rally today – the First Amendment to U.S. Constitution, the outstanding law enforcement officers and the City of Dahlonega.
The organizers were allowed to exercise their right under the First Amendment. Antifa and the Socialist Coalition of North Georgia did the same. The City of Dahlonega remained unscathed.

Many downtown businesses will close on 9.14 due to rally

The list of local businesses on the historic Dahlonega square that will be closed on September 14 has steadily increased as the impending rally approaches.
Some of the first businesses to announce closing on the 14th are, Spirits Tavern, Gustavo’s, and Knuckles Sandwich Shop. Spirits posted on their reason for closing on their Facebook page, which was later shared by Knuckles “Spirits Tavern will be closed on this day (Saturday, September 14). The safety of our employees and guests are our highest priority. The revenue lost is not worth acknowledging hate of any kind.”
Since then, several other businesses have taken to social media to announce their closing on 9.14, including Mayor Sam Norton’s business, the Picnic Cafe and Dessertery. According to Picnic Cafe’s Facebook page, “It’s not always about the dollar. Family values and a sense of community are what most businesses on the Square are about here in Dahlonega. We will close Saturday, September 14th and encourage others to be home with their family. We will reopen the day after these disruptive protests and counter-protests. We look forward to seeing you on Make-Up Monday (9/16/19).”
Crimson Moon told FYN that they will be closed during the day and open only to host the concert scheduled for Saturday night. Capers on the Square, Brad Walker Pottery, Paul Thomas Chocolates, The Dahlonega General Store, Jolie Day Spa, Walking Ghost Tours, and Studio Jewelers are amongst the businesses that will also be closed. The Dahlonega Farmer’s Market is also canceled for 9.14.
While many downtown businesses will be closed, there are some who will remain open, or open later Saturday evening. This includes The Fudge Factory and Outlaw Jerky will open at 4 p.m. on Saturday, 19 Degrees North, Pueblos, Grapevines, Johnny B’s, Naturally Georgia, Giggle Monkey Toys, Shenanigan’s Irish Pub, and Bourbon Street Grille, (downstairs dining only) will all remain open.
Deb Rowe, owner of Shenanigan’s and Bourbon Street Grille, explained that they will remain open, but the upstairs dining area and balcony area of Bourbon Street will be closed. Patrons will still have the option to dine downstairs at Bourbon Street. Both businesses expressed support and appreciation not for the rally, but for the many law enforcement officers and emergency personnel who will be diligently working to keep everyone safe during the rally,
“Shenanigans and Bourbon Street will be open on Saturday 9/14, offering our employee discount of 30% to all emergency personnel. We are aware that many businesses are taking a different approach, and that’s just as understandable. We will stand in the confidence of our law enforcement to monitor and protect, as well as being steadfast with safety and security ourselves. In addition to our local emergency personnel, there are several hundreds of additional officers coming to serve our community and it is our hope that after a contained and uneventful demonstration, we will be able to serve them in appreciation of their service to us all.”

Chestatee Artists Group announces new Folk School

The Dahlonega Chestatee Artists Group has opened registration for their upcoming Folk School from now until September 27, 2019. The first classes of the Folk School will be held the weekend of October 11 through October 13, beginning Friday evening at 7p.m. until 9p.m. and ending Sunday around 11:30a.m.

There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, September 12 for those interested in learning more about the mission of Chestatee Artists, the Folk School, and to meet the instructors. The meeting will be at 6p.m., in the United Community Bank Community Room.
According to their website, a variety of categories will be offered to the public, “Our Folk School classes will be held in our beautiful city of Dahlonega twice a year with some of the finest instructors in many exciting categories. Leatherwork, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, wire wrapping, jewelry making, weaving and more.”

UNG set to open new Blue Ridge campus fall of 2020

The University of North Georgia is a year away from opening their newest campus, located in the Fannin County mountains in Blue Ridge, GA, according to the UNG Press.
The campus stands alone from the current Blue Ridge campus and is located off GA 515. According to UNG’s website, the funding the for the new campus comes from the state’s 2019 fiscal year budget, “Georgia Speaker of the House of Representatives David Ralston helped secure $5.5 million in state funds for the new Blue Ridge Campus in the 2019 fiscal year budget. Ralston, a UNG alumnus, represents Georgia District 7, including Fannin County, in the General Assembly.”
Once complete, the facility will be equipped with “science lab space, a computer lab, and spaces for students to gather and study outside of classrooms.” So far, the main roads have been paved, and utilities have been installed and will be tied into city mains. Site grading has begun, and construction on the building itself should begin in August. The campus is scheduled to be completed in time for classes beginning fall semester 2020.

UNG baseball players named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG baseball players, Chase Sudduth and Parker Morrison, were each selected for the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Second Team.

Sudduth, a senior from Powder Springs, GA, his .379 on the year, with 17 doubles, two triples and eight homers with 40 RBI. He was also named to the All-Peach Belt Conference First Team and D2CCA All-Region Second Team earlier this month. Sudduth, at one point this season, had a 15 game hitting streak and ended the season on a 43 game reached base streak, both longest on the UNG team. He also had 23 multi-hit games, including the only five-hit game on the team this season.
Morrison, a redshirt sophomore from Cumming, GA, went 5-4 with nine saves in 2019, fanning 81 opposing batters while walking just 22. His ERA was a 3.52, third best on the team. He was also selected for Second Team All-Conference earlier this month.
