UNG freshman sets new rifling record as No. 19

DAHLONEGA, GA
According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG freshman, Ricky Medina, shot an aggregate score of 1170, beating the previous aggregate scoring record by four points as the No. 19 UNG rifle team defeated the University of Alabama Saturday at the COL Raymond C. Hamilton Rifle Range. Clemson also shot in the event, but they do not count in the results, due to the Tigers competing as a club sport.
Medina tied the smallbore scoring record, firing a 584 in the discipline. He was perfect in the prone position, scoring two perfect 100 strings in the process. He coupled that with a 586 in the air rifle discipline to defeat the field by 19 points in the aggregate scoring.
UNG shot a season-high 4617 as a team, finishing just five points off the school record in aggregate, and had the top three shooters with Medina, Tobin Sanctuary and Kimberlee Nettles.
Other highlights from the event were personal records for Veronica Stanley in smallbore (567), Eric Azotea in air rifle (573) and Lucas Gilliland in air rifle (582).

Eduardo Pessoa scored twice and Eren Ozer scored late as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team earned a 4-4 draw with Tampa Thursday night at Clayton State’s Laker Field.
Tampa got things going in the 12th minute with a goal from Till Neumann, but the Nighthawks answered as Adam Farrell put home the first UNG goal of 2018 on a penalty kick in the 37th
minute. Just four minutes later, though, the Spartans regained the lead on a shot from distance to take a 2-1 lead to halftime.
After most of the second half went by scoreless, UNG evened it up with the first Pessoa goal of the night off a Prince Domafriyie pass. Tampa answered with two goals within 60 seconds of one another to take a 4-2 lead.

The Nighthawks didn’t give up, however, as Pessoa scored his second with 12 minutes left off a rebound before Eren Ozer hit a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to tie the game back up. Tampa took 12 shots in the overtime periods but could not find a fifth goal and the game ended in a draw.

Dahlonega City Hall announces special called meeting

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Dahlonega City Council will hold a special called meeting at the Dahlonega City Hall on September 5, at 4:30pm to discuss Ordinance 2019-time, manner, and place, and Ordinance 2019-25.
According to City Hall, Ordinance 2019 is, “An ordinance regulating planned and spontaneous demonstrations on public property.” Ordinance 2019-25 is, “An ordinance to encourage innovative and safe uses of unmanned aircraft while addressing concerns about accountability.”
The public is encouraged to attend.

Local art to be featured at Art in the Park

The Dahlonega Art Alliance is hosting “Art in the Park” on Saturday, August 10, from 1p.m. until 5p.m. at Hancock Park, located behind the Dahlonega square.
Various local artists will have their work on display and available for purchase to the public; there will also be different mediums of art presented, such as live art, Plein air painting, photography, and music.
Local artist, Lily Payne Art, told FYN that she plans on showcasing her newest sunflower prints, “Art in the Park” will be local artists presenting their work to the public for sale. There will be several tents featuring different styles and mediums.”
Payne also explained that the Dahlonega Art Alliance is a “new alliance for local artists. It is to help local artists get more exposure and support each other through meetings and events.”
UNG sophomore named PBC pitcher of the week

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG sophomore, Nick Clarno, was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came after Clarno hit a homerun all three games against Palm Beach Atlantic.
Clarno his .455 against Palm Beach Atlantic over the weekend, driving in six runs as the Nighthawks ran their record to 6-0. Clarno had a 1.364 batting percentage, and he opened with a solo shot in the first game before going for 2-for-4 in the second and third games. He also added a double during the finale, scoring a total of four runs and striking out only once in 11 at-bats.
Clarno leads the PBC in slugging percentage, is tied for second in home runs and is seventh in total bases. This is his first weekly honor of his career.

UNG Athletics releases 2019 track and field schedule

DAHLONEGA, GA
Tom Williams, head coach of the University of North Georgia track and field team, has announced the 2019 Nighthawks schedule of events.
The Fifth Annual Cougar Invitational will kick off the season on February 23 and will be hosted by Columbus State. The Nighthawks will then travel to Berry College for the Victor Icebreaker Duals held on March 2.
UNG will then go to Columbus for the Adonica Ferguson Classic on March 9, before going to Emory the weekend of March 22-23 and also March 29-30. The final regular season meet will be in Jacksonville, Alabama, at the JSU Invitational on April 6.
The Nighthawks will then head down to Daytona Beach for the Peach Belt Conference Championships from April 17-19.
UNG women’s soccer seniors earn all-region honors

According to press release from the University of North Georgia Athletic’s Department, UNG women’s soccer seniors, Renee VanHorn and Asa Thorsen, were announced as the newest members of the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region team. VanHorn earned second team honors, and Thorsen was named to the third team.
VanHorn finished in fourth place at the Peach Belt Conference, with 12 goals for the season. She also added three assists, bringing her collective total to 27 points and six game-winning goals.
Thorsen scored two goals, assisted on three other goals, and was a key player in the midfield for UNG.

UNG will host 32-team high school basketball showcase

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG and Adrian Penland Basketball are coming together to host the North Georgia High School Showcase that will be held on Saturday, December 1 in two facilities across campus.
North Georgia Medical Center’s Orthopedic Services is sponsoring the event, which will feature a face-off between 32 of the state’s highest ranking high school programs in the state. There will be 16 games, of which wight will be held in the new Convocation Center, and the additional eight will be held in UNG’s Memorial Hall.
Tickets are available for $10 for general admission, $5 for ages 6-17, and free to children five and under. One ticket is good for all 16 games, and it also includes admission into both facilities.

UNG women’s soccer team endures loss to No. 3 Columbus State

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the women’s soccer team lost 4-1, to No. 3 Columbus State Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex. The game was broadcast as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase.
Columbus State junior, Riley Clark, netted her first two goals within two minutes of one another starting at the 24th minute, when she took a cross from Kimmy May to put CSU up, 1-0. Clark struck with her second in the 26th minute with a back heel kick after Annie Mayo sent a low cross into the box.
In the 52nd minute, Clark capped off her hat trick with another goal off a May assist. Three minutes later, Columbus State scored their final goal of the contest when Brooke Nail beat her defender one-on-one and pushed the ball to the back of the net to put the Cougars up, 4-0.
North Georgia got on the scoreboard when Bailey Swindell, just seconds after checking into the game for the first time, headed in a corner kick from Rosie Embley.

No. 21 Women’s Basketball Overcomes Slow Start for 70-65 WinOver Lakers

MORROW, Ga. – Trailing by 13 early, the No. 21 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team fought all the way back and hung on late for a 70-65 win over Clayton State Monday night at The Loch. The Nighthawks have won 11 straight games and are two wins away from clinching a spot in the Peach Belt Conference tournament.
The Lakers jumped out to 12-3 lead in the first four minutes and extended that lead to 20-7 before the Nighthawks started chipping away. UNG cut the lead to just one at the half for a 34-33 score after two quarters.
North Georgia took its first lead of the night with 6:06 to play in the third period, 37-36, but the Lakers stretched their lead back out to six through the third. The Nighthawks went on to outscore Clayton State, 25-14, in the final period to claim the road win.
Amber Skidgel came alive in the fourth quarter to lead the Nighthawks in scoring with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including three baskets from distance.
NOTES
– Julie McKie scored 12 points, all of which came from the free throw line. For the Lakers, Abreylin Rackley led the way with 18 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc.
– Only three other times has North Georgia had a winning streak go 11 games or longer since the 2001-02 season, including two 15-game winning streaks.
– UNG went 30-of-36 from the free throw line in the game. The 30 made free throws ties the fifth-most made free throws in a single game in the NCAA era.
NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will finish a three games in five days stretch with a home game against Columbus State on Wednesday. The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and will also serve as Faculty Appreciation Night.
UNG softball opens with 7-1 win over Southern Wesleyan

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, junior, Marley Stowers, hit a grand slam over the left field wall, pushing No.3 UNG softball team to a 7-1 win over Southern Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

Kaylyn Anthony scored the game’s first run on a SWU error in the first inning of the opening game of the Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic. After loading the bases, the Nighthawks got Stowers up to bat and, with a full count, she put the softball well out of the park to push the lead to 5-0.

Anthony struck an RBI single in the fourth inning before Katelyn Perry tacked on another run ins the sixth on an RBI single. The Warriors pushed a run across in the top of the seventh to bring the game to its final score.

Smith named PBC pitcher of the week

University of North Georgia softball player, Kylee Smith, has been named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week. The conference announced their consideration on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith was 2-0 in three NFCA Leadoff Classic appearances, allowing just two hits in 13.2 innings, with a total of 24 strikeouts. She also picked up her first win against No. 19 Lenoir-Rhyne University, going all seven innings with two hits allowed and one walk while striking out 15.
The UNG sophomore pitched five, no-hit innings, landing a 6-3 win over Hillsdale. Overall, Smith struck out six, before pitching 1.2 innings of relief against California University of Pennsylvania, where she struck out three with no hits nor walks allowed. Smith is currently tied for the league lead in wins and is second in strikeouts.

UNG President visits LC Library to discuss her new children’s book

University of North Georgia President, Dr. Bonita Jacobs, visited the Lumpkin County Library for a book reading/signing of her new book, “UNG The Gold I See!” on Thursday. The children’s book is one of five that will be released by Dr. Jacobs and the UNG Press.

Dr. Jacobs told FYN that she was inspired to write the children’s books after she was gifted a copy of Barbara Walsh’s “The Poppy Lady.” “I loved the idea of using a children’s book to tell the history of North Georgia.” She also explains that the “genesis” of the book was to raise money for scholarships, “I’m very passionate about scholarships.” Dr. Jacobs explained, “and all profits from my books go straight to scholarship funds.” Jillian Murphy, Assistant Managing Editor with UNG Press added the book has sold enough copies to fund a few scholarships already.

Dr. Jacobs also expressed gratitude for the book’s illustrator, J’anell Short, who is also Dr. Jacob’s sister, “We were able to save a lot on costs and also have a quick release date, thanks to her willingness to help.” She also added, “I’m very heartened by how well the book has been received.”

UNG will host NCAA Division II Showcase on ESPN3

According to the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, UNG will host the NCAA Division II Showcase in front of a national audience, as both Nighthawks basketball teams receive Columbus State on Wednesday, January 9, in the Peach Belt Conference. The games will broadcast on ESPN3 and are scheduled for 5:30pm and 7:30pm.
As established in the NCAA’s Showcase agreement, UNG will have five different sports broadcasting nationally from their home campus, which makes them the first school in Division II to accomplish this achievement.
The nationally televised doubleheader is part of the reward for winning the NCAA Award of Excellence for the Operation Nighthawks of Honor initiative back in 2017. As part of Wednesday’s doubleheader, the UNG athletic department will hold its annual ceremony at halftime of the women’s game honoring those who were killed during, or associated with, the Korean War. Each of the university’s teams was assigned a UNG graduate or former student that were killed in action while serving the country.
The game will serve as a “blue-out,” with games and contests throughout the night for fans to enjoy. The UNG Dahlonega Student Government Association will give out 1,000 free t-shirts, and there will also be a raffle throughout the night to benefit UNG’s Make-A-Wish initiative.

UNG baseball schedule announced for 2019 season

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, head baseball coach, Tom Cantrell, has announced the 2019 schedule for the UNG baseball program. The 2019 schedule includes 29 home games, which will be held at Bob Stein Stadium.
Two of the eight teams that will be matching up in the 2019 season made it to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Southern Indiana and Columbus State and will go against the Nighthawks during the upcoming season.
UNG will face USI February 15-17, in Dahlonega, before a trip to Columbus May 3-5 to finish the regular season.
UNG’s opener will be against Florida Tech, before opening up at home against Palm Beach Atlantic February 8-10. After the series against Southern Indiana, the Nighthawks will also open in the home Peach Belt battle against Flagler, to end a nine game season.

New children’s book celebrates UNG Dahlonega

The University of North Georgia President, Bonita Jacobs, has written the first of five children’s book that will pay homage to each UNG campus. The book was published by UNG Press, and is titled, “UNG The Gold I See.”
According to a press release from UNG, the children’s book is designed to engage readers, “Of all ages through its multi-generational main characters. Benjamin Brown, daughter Jamie, and grandson Tommy each have a different goal during Visitors Day at the Dahlonega Campus. The grandfather wants to recall the memories of his years in the Corps of Cadets, while Tommy’s mother wants to remember her years in UNG’s nursing program. Tommy wants to find the legendary treasure: the gold hidden somewhere on campus. He has Nigel the Nighthawk, UNG’s mascot, and a treasure map to guide him; his grandfather and mother have their memories.”
“UNG The Gold I See” will be available November 2018, in hardback copies and will be priced at $29.99.
The next book of the series, featuring the Gainesville campus, is scheduled to be released in 2019.
