SURPRISE, SURPRISE: Nighthawks Punch Ticket to Arizona

WINGATE, N.C. – For the first time in program history, the No. 27 University of North Georgia women’s tennis team will be headed to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Surprise, Arizona, after upsetting No. 15 Wingate, 5-2, Sunday afternoon.

After dropping the first match of the day in doubles, the Nighthawks took the early 2-1 advantage with wins by Vaishali Jorge and Lexa Loden at No. 2 doubles before a 9-8 tiebreak win for Felicia Baratta and Holly Bennett at the top flight.

From there, the Nighthawks dominated the singles scene. Adrienne Bofinger, fresh off of the match-winning point in the first round, cruised past her opponent, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Bennett captured the fourth point for UNG, winning in straight sets at No. 3, setting the stage for Jorge to win at No. 4 singles to send North Georgia forward in the tournament.

This is the first time a North Georgia tennis team has advanced past the regional round.

From here, the Nighthawks will travel to Surprise, Arizona, for the NCAA Championships. The remaining 16 teams will be put into a new bracket with the top four teams seeded and the remaining 12 put into the bracket via a blind draw.

Johns, Smith Named Finalists For Schutt Sports/NFCA National Player of the Year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of North Georgia softball players Amber Johns and Kylee Smith were named finalists for the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award as announced by the association Mondayafternoon.

Smith, a sophomore from Suwanee, Georgia, was a top 25 member last year on her way to becoming a finalist for the NFCA’s Freshman of the Year. She was named to the Watch List prior to the start of the season and was one of just 10 members of the 50-player watch list to be in the running for the award. Smith is 26-1 with two saves on the year. She leads the nation in strikeouts with 245.

Johns, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Georgia, is making her first appearance on the national list in her career. This season, she is 16-0 with 102 punchouts. Johns has given up just 13 runs across 95.2 innings of work inside the circle.

The Top 10 finalists will be announced on May 15 with the 2018 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year revealed on June 4.

The award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievement among softball student-athletes throughout Division II. UNG’s Courtney Poole was the inaugural winner of the award.

Darrah, Blankinship Post Career High Numbers in 82-54 Win

DAHLONEGA – Behind Mackenzie Darrah’s and Deana Blankinship’s big games, the University of North Georgia women’s basketball team opened Peach Belt Conference play with a resounding 82-54 win over Francis Marion Saturday afternoon in Memorial Hall.

Darrah netted 21 points, matching her career high set against Erskine last season, while Blankinship contributed 19 points, surpassing her career high of 18 points.

UNG never trailed in the contest, hitting the first basket of the game. The game was tied just once at 8-8, but UNG retook the lead moments later, extending it to as many as 32 points late.

NOTES
– The 29-point first quarter was the most points in a single quarter this season, overtaking the three 28-point quarters that UNG has had so far this season.

– The Nighthawks shot over 57 percent from the field. Amber Skidgel and Julianne Sutton both finished in double figures, scoring 13 and 11, respectively.

– North Georgia assisted on 19 of its 32 made field goals.

Alex Grant Named PBC Player of the Week

AUGUSTA, Ga. – For the first time in his collegiate career, University of North Georgia men’s soccer player Alex Grant was named the Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer player of the week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

Grant scored three goals with one assist in two games for the Nighthawks. The junior from Wolverhampton, England, scored a goal and added an assist as UNG downed Clayton State 5-2 on the road, locking up the No. 3 seed in the PBC Tournament in the process. He followed that by scoring both UNG goals in a 3-2 loss to North Greenville in the regular-season finale on Saturday.

The three goals give him nine on the season, ranking him fourth in the league through the regular season. He is also tied for ninth in assists and is fourth in the league with 22 points.

Grant and the Nighthawks will host the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinals at the UNG Soccer Complex tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. as they welcome the No. 6 seed USC Aiken Pacers to Dahlonega.

No. 20 Rifle Falls at No. 17 Morehead State Saturday

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Ricky Medina scored a personal best 588 in air rifle, but the No. 20 University of North Georgia rifle team fell to No. 17 Morehead State in a Saturday dual at MSU’s Button Rifle Range.

Medina was the top UNG shooter in the meet, shooting an aggregate score of 1,149. Tobin Sanctuary and Kimberlee Nettles placed in the top 10 as well with Sanctuary shooting the top score in the dual in smallbore with a 573.

Eric Azotea and Arica Hayes each set personal records in the match as well. Azotea shot a 546 in smallbore, while Hayes fired a 575 in air rifle.

The Nighthawks will jump back into SoCon action next Saturday as they travel to VMI.

Men’s Tennis Shoots Past Emmanuel, 7-2, in Season Opener

DAHLONEGA – After a doubles sweep by the Nighthawks, the University of North Georgia men’s tennis team coasted to a 7-2 win over Emmanuel in the 2017-18 season opener Wednesday at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

All three doubles teams ran past their Lion opponents by scores of 8-3. Mark Laishley earned the first singles point at No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score to put UNG up, 4-0.

After Emmanuel won at No. 3 singles, Tim Kiehl finished his match at No. 2 singles in straight sets to clinch the win. Ryan Gaskin won at No. 1 singles in a three-set come-from-behind match to earn UNG’s sixth point of the day.

The match served as the lone event counting toward the overall record for North Georgia. The Nighthawks will next play on the road at Belmont Abbey on February 3.

Women’s Golf Finishes Alone in Second at LeeAnn Noble Memorial

DAHLONEGA – Megan Sabol finished in a tie for third individually as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team placed second in the Fourth Annual LeeAnn Noble Memorial at Achasta Golf Club. Lee set a new 18- (290) and 36-hole (586) record on the final day to finish as the tournament champion.

“I thought we played quite well,” said head women’s golf coach Leigh Anne Hunter. “I was very happy to get some wins over some regional opponents which are crucial at moving us up in the region rankings as we push toward the postseason.”

The Nighthawks (605) finished one stroke ahead of Young Harris (606) for the tournament runner-up. North Georgia’s two-round score tied the program’s best set earlier this season at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational. Lenoir-Rhyne (617) and Lincoln Memorial (620) rounded out the top-five teams in the tournament.

Sabol shot a three-over-par 147 in the tournament, finishing four strokes back of Lee’s Haverly Harrold for the individual title. Carson Roberts finished in a three-way tie for fifth at 148.

North Georgia will next compete at the Newberry Fall Invitational on October 30-31 in Elgin, S.C. That tournament will serve as the end to the fall season.

Men’s Soccer Shuts Out USC Aiken, 3-0

AIKEN, S.C. – Carl Ludwig Eriksson had a say in all three goals as the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team earned a shutout against USC Aiken in a 3-0 win Saturday evening.

Eriksson had two assists and a goal in the match. His first assist came in the 13th minute when he crossed a ball in to Gabriel Garcia to get an early 1-0 lead.

The junior from Sweden scored his goal in the 24th minute after he took a pass from Matheus Abreu and scored on a wide open net. The Nighthawks final goal came from Michael Akin in the 81st minute.

NOTES
– Eriksson’s four-point performance is a career-high, surpassing his three-point performance from last season’s matchup against Young Harris.

– Junior Matt Sharman had 10 saves in the match. The double-digit save match is the second of the season.

– North Georgia is now 6-6 overall and 3-2 in Peach Belt play.

Malasek Nets Two Goals in Women’s Soccer 5-1 Win Over Lander

DAHLONEGA – Freshman Taylor Malasek had her first career two-goal match as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team defeated Lander, 5-1, Wednesday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks improved to 4-2-0 in Peach Belt Conference play with the win.

“After they scored to go 1-1, we were able to put our foot back on the glass,” said head women’s soccer coach Chris Adams. “I thought we played a fantastic game in the second half.”

Malasek scored the match’s opening goal in the 11th minute off a deflection from Michelle Allen‘s cross into the box that fell right to her feet. Lander’s Sara Flores scored three minutes later to even the match at 1-1.

Both teams traded shots throughout the next 30 minutes until Rosie Embley bent a shot just under the crossbar in the 43rd minute from 25 yards out to put UNG up, 2-1, going to halftime.

After a foul was drawn in the box, Malasek put home a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to extend the Nighthawk lead. The final two goals were scored by Allen in the 78th and Jordyn Missel in the 87th, both being their first goal of the season.

NOTES
– With the win, UNG tied the all-time series with Lander at 7-7. The Nighthawks have now won three in a row against the Bearcats.

– Missel’s goal came just nine seconds after stepping on the field. The goal was also the first of her career.

– North Georgia took five shots in the second half, three of which found the back of the net.

The Nighthawks will host No. 23 Limestone in non-conference play on Saturday, October 7. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Rifle Breaks School Records at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Ruthanne Conner shot a 584 in smallbore, breaking the previous individual smallbore record, as the University of North Georgia rifle team competed against some of the best rifle teams in the country Saturday at The Citadel.

North Georgia broke team records in smallbore with a score of 2291 and aggregate with a score of 4608.

Conner finished in second place overall in smallbore, breaking Matt Settele’s previous record of 581. Dakota Spivey finished in eighth in air rifle with a score of 588.

Eric Azotea finished with personal records in both air rifle and smallbore, while Kimberlee Nettles finished with a personal best in air rifle as well.

The Nighthawks will travel to Ole Miss to take part in the Ole Miss Invitational next Saturday, September 30.

West Chester Holds Off Nighthawks, 9-4, On Opening Day Of NCAA Championship

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The No. 3 University of North Georgia baseball team came up on the short end of a 9-4 decision with No. 21 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the 2017 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship at The Ball Park at Grand Prairie.

WCU (41-11) used four runs in the third and five in the seventh to snap the Nighthawks’ four-game NCAA tournament winning streak.

UNG (46-11) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of a RBI triple by Steven Tomlinson that plated Conner Corbitt who led off the inning with a single. A ground out by Andres Perez two batters later plated Tomlinson to push before Connor Hoover capped the inning with a RBI single of his own.

West Chester’s Jared Melone belted a grand slam in the next at-bat for WCU to give Golden Rams the lead for good. The two-out rally was aided by a UNG throwing error and a hit batter.

The Golden Rams later plated five runs in the seventh to break open the one-run game. West Chester sent all nine batters to the plate in the frame and had a string of four consecutive hits, including three RBI-singles while five straight reached safely.

North Georgia’s final at-bat made things interesting as the Nighthawks loaded the bases with one out after a free pass to Hoover scored Tomlinson to cut the WCU lead to 9-4, but the Golden Rams shut the door with an inning-ending double play.

Daniel McCrary (10-2) was tagged with just his second loss of the season after allowing four runs, all unearned, on five hits while walking two and striking out three.

Offensively, Hoover and Tomlinson combined for five of UNG’s seven hits on the day. Hoover was 3-of-4 with a pair of RBI, while Tomlinson was 2-of-4 with two runs scored.

The Nighthawks will now face the loser of Lindenwood and No. 2 Delta State on Monday, May 29 at 4:00 EST in an elimination game.

Four Nighthawks Named NFCA All-Region

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced the 2017 NFCA Division II All-Region teams with the No. 3 University of North Georgia placing five players on the honor roll which was the most in the Southeast and tied for the fifth-highest total of any team in the nation. Kylee Smith, Sydney Sprague and Stephanie Hartness were all named to the first team while Alishia Frierson was tabbed a second team honoree.

The first team All-Region honor is the second consecutive for Hartness as a Nighthawk. The All-Conference first team selection currently leads UNG in batting at .429 and sits atop the Peach Belt Conference in slugging percentage by more than 40 points.

Smith led the Peach Belt in earned run average, strikeouts, and wins en route to a first team All-Conference selection. The freshman, who went is 27-4, was named the PBC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Sprague was a second team All-Conference selection and currently leads the team in homeruns with 13 to go along with her .371 batting average.

Frierson joined Sprague as a second team All-Conference honoree and is the Nighthawks’ second leading hitter with a .382 average with 16 doubles.

This year’s All-Region squads are comprised of 210 student-athletes from 116 programs.

The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s eight regions with first and second team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2017 NFCA Division II All-American squads.

The 2017 NFCA Division II All-American teams will be announced on Wednesday, May 24 at the NCAA Division II National Championship Banquet in Salem, Va.

Cantrell Named PBC Coach of the Year; Nine Nighthawks Earn All-Conference Honors

FLORENCE, S.C. – The second-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team led the way in the Peach Belt Conference annual awards announced tonight at the PBC Banquet on the eve of the league tournament in Florence. Head coach Tom Cantrell was named Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons while a conference-high nine Nighthawks landed on the All-Conference team.

Georgia College’s Brandon Benson was named the PBC Player of the Year while USC Aiken’s Joseph Benitez was selected as the Pitcher of the Year and Montevallo’s Sebastian Samuels was named the Freshman of the Year. The league’s head coaches selected all awards.

Landing on the first team All-Conference team for UNG was Michael Bell (second base), Michael Gouge (outfield), Steven Bower (pitcher) and Dylan Peppers (pitcher).

Devin Gearhart (third base), Connor Hoover (shortstop), Bill Leroy (designated hitter), Daniel McCrary (pitcher), Josh Bryan (pitcher) represented North Georgia with second team All-Conference honors.

Bell batted .311 with 11 homeruns while fielding a smooth .981 as second base for the Nighthawks.

Gouge was the team’s second leading hitter at .412, which ranks tenth in the conference.

Bower posted a 7-3 record on the hill before a season-ending injury. He also recorded the program’s first-ever no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Montevallo on Mar. 31.

Peppers was 7-2 with a team-best 82 strikeouts (fifth in PBC) that included a program record 17 in a 3-0 shutout at Columbus State on Apr. 16.

Gearhart batted .323 from the leadoff position for the Nighthawks.

Hoover is UNG’s team leader in runs scored (70), triples (5), homeruns (17) and RBI (70).

Leroy is North Georgia top statistical hitter at .452.

McCrary tallied a team-best nine wins, while Bryan sports an impressive 1.57 ERA and 4-0 record in 13 appearances.

The Coach of the Year honor marks the sixth time that the veteran skipper has earned the league’s top coaching honor. His first came in 1998 when he was named GJCAA Coach of the Year after guiding Georgia Perimeter to the JUCO World Series. He also earned the honor in 2001, 2003, 2007 (PBC) and 2015 (PBC).

UNG has been ranked in the Collegiate Baseball’s top 10 every week of the regular season, highlighted by the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking on March 20.

Currently ranked second in the nation, North Georgia is the top seed in the PBC Tournament after a 19-5 conference season and 40-8 overall mark.

The top-seeded Nighthawks will begin play in the double-elimination Peach Belt Tournament tomorrow with a quarterfinal game against eight-seeded Georgia Southwestern tomorrow (May 10) at 5:00 p.m. at FMU’s Cornell Field at Sparrow Stadium.

UNG Graduation Ceremonies Set for Saturday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The University of North Georgia will hold two separate graduation ceremonies in Dahlonega Saturday.

At 1 p.m. in Memorial Hall Gymnasium, Dahlonega- and Cumming-based graduates of the College of Health Sciences & Professions, College of Science and Mathematics and Mike Cottrell College of Business.

Former state assistant Attorney General Greg Blount will be the guest speaker. Blount is a leading environmental attorney for more than 30 years and has been active in the Georgia-Florida-Alabama water wars.
The second ceremony will be held at the same venue at 4 p.m. to honor graduates of the College of Education,

University College, and College of Arts & Letters. Dr. Jeff Bearden will be the commencement speaker. Bearden was appointed by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve on the Governor’s Education Advisory Board. He has been a UNG executive for more than 25 years.
