COLUMBIA, S.C. – The fifth ranked University of North Georgia women’s basketball team survived an upset bid, defeating Benedict Tuesday evening, 69-65.
Columbia, S.C. — The No. 5 ranked University of North Georgia women’s basketball team jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but the Tigers battled back, only allowing the lead to surpass 10 points for a total of 63 seconds early in the second half.
Benedict took their first and only lead of the game on the heels of a 13-1 run near the end of the third quarter, but the Nighthawks answered with a 13-5 run to retake the lead.
The Tigers mounted one last push in the fourth period, cutting the lead to four late, but UNG held on to remain unbeaten.
NOTES
– Julianne Sutton finished a rebound shy of a double-double, tallying 17 points and nine rebounds. Lacie McCoy scored 15 off the bench, while Josie Earnhardt and Caroline Martin contributed 14 and 11, respectively.
– Benedict shot 24 free throws, making 16 of them, while UNG only had 10 opportunities at the stripe, making five.
NEXT UP
North Georgia will return home to host the UNG Nighthawk Classic this weekend. UNG will first take on Delta State in the first game of the classic Friday at 2 p.m.
Second-half outburst lifts UNG women past Emaunel, 74-56

DAHLONEGA – After a slow start saw the No. 6 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team trailing at halftime, the Nighthawks turned it around, outscoring Emmanuel 41-20 in the second half on the way to a 74-56 win Saturday on the final day of the Peach Belt / Conference Carolinas Challenge.
Emmanuel and North Georgia were in a back-and-forth affair in the first half that saw the Lions out in front, 36-33, after a buzzer beating three pointer from Jazmin Allen. In the second half, it was all UNG as the Nighthawks went on a 17-2 run that spanned most of the fourth quarter on the way to the win.
NOTES
– UNG has never lost in the Peach Belt / Conference Carolinas Challenge since its inception at the start of the 2014-15 season, going 14-0 in the event.
– Josie Earnhardt and Julianne Sutton each had a team-high 17 points on the day. Sutton pulled down eight rebounds, while Earnhardt hit five of her 11 three point attempts.
– The Nighthawk bench outscored Emmanuel’s reserves, 30-7.

McIntyre, Champion lead Nighthawks to season-opening win over North Greenville

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Blake McIntyre put up 25 points while Frank Champion notched a double-double as the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team won its season opener with an 87-79 win over North Greenville in the Tri-Conference Challenge Friday at Georgia College.
After jumping out to an 11-8 lead midway through the first half, UNG went on a 10-0 run, capped off by back-to-back threes from McIntyre. The Nighthawks led by as many as 15 in the first half before the Crusaders clawed back to a six point deficit at the half.
North Georgia led the entire second half, but North Greenville was able to cut the lead to two with two minutes to play before UNG went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead back to double figures and secure the win.
NOTES
– McIntyre went 8-for-12 from behind the arc to get 24 of his 25 points.
– Champion’s double-double consisted of 16 points and 13 boards. Zach Brown contributed 15 points while Darnell Snyers added 14 points.
– UNG shot exactly 50 percent from the floor (31-for-62).

UNG women close out season with 2-0 win over Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team used stifling defense and a pair of goals to earn a 2-0 win in the regular season finale Saturday at Georgia Southwestern.
North Georgia got on the board in the 40th minute when Skylar Abbott scored her first goal of her collegiate career. After leading by a goal at the break, UNG doubled its lead as Taylor Malasek found Katey Derkay for the final goal of the match in the 52nd minute.
NOTES
– UNG shut down GSW defensively, giving up just four shots, all of which were taken in the first half.
– With the win, North Georgia moves into a tie for fourth with Clayton State in the league standings. However, since the Lakers beat UNG in the regular season, Clayton State earns the fourth seed and will play host to the Nighthawks in the quarterfinal round.

North Georgia travels to Clayton State in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Tournament Saturday. Game time will be announced early next week.
Nighthawks picked to finish 2nd in PBC; Franklin, Sutton named preseason All Conference

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 6 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team was picked to finish second in the Peach Belt, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon in its preseason preview. In addition, seniors Abbie Franklin and Julianne Sutton were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
A senior guard from Homer, Georgia, Franklin is a two-time PBC All-Conference selection, including a first-team All-Conference honor last season. She averaged 9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season and was ranked second in the PBC in total assists and 16th in steals. Franklin was also ranked fourth in the league in three-pointers made and sixth in three-point field goal percentage. She has scored over 1,000 career points with over 400 career assists and 150 career steals and is currently sixth on the PBC’s all-time list in career made three-pointers with 217.
A senior forward from Flowery Branch, Georgia, Sutton is a three-time PBC All-Conference selection including first-team All-Conference the last two years. The 2019-20 PBC Player of the Year, she led the team and was ranked sixth in the PBC with 16.1 ppg last season and is currently 12th on the PBC’s all-time scoring list with 1,705 career points. Sutton has scored 20 or more points seven times last year with a season-high 30 against Union in the NCAA Tournament, and she ranked sixth in the PBC in rebounding, second in field goal percentage, eighth in free throw percentage and 15th in blocks.
Joining the two Nighthawks on the Preseason All-Conference team was Flagler’s Tori Pearce and Lander’s Zamiya Passmore and Makaila Cange.
North Georgia was picked second in the preseason poll, claiming three first place votes. Lander was the favorite to win after earning seven first place votes and 79 total points. UNG had 75 points, followed by Clayton State (62), Georgia Southwestern (51) and Augusta (50).
UNG will open the 2021-22 season Friday, November 12, at home against Lees-McRae as part of the Peach Belt/Conference Carolinas Challenge. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. –After trailing 3-0 early in the second half, the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team reeled off a trio of goals in 12 minutes, but Flagler would score twice more late to earn a 5-3 win Saturday.
The Saints scored in the 22nd, 27th and 57th minutes to jump out to a 3-0 lead, but they quickly saw the lead vanish as North Georgia stormed back starting with Victor Galterio slotting home a pass from Harrison Wright in the 63rd minute. Just 69 seconds later, Gabriel Campora sent home a rebound to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Nighthawks tied the game in the 75th minute as Payge Sinclair scored a rebound, but Flagler would have the final goals, scoring just 26 seconds after Sinclair and then again three minutes later to get to the final score.
NOTES
– Flagler’s Max Birkelund scored three of the goals against UNG, marking his first career hat trick after just eight matches.
– UNG scored its three goals on four shots on target. The Nighthawks took 11 shots overall.

Third quarter surge lifts UNG past Ga. State

ATLANTA – A 20-7 third quarter was the turning point as the University of North Georgia women’s basketball team defeated Division I Georgia State Monday night, 69-54.
The Nighthawks jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before the Panthers went on a 15-5 run to take a five point lead early in the second quarter. UNG climbed back to a one point deficit by halftime before going on the 20-7 run that elapsed the entire third quarter.
From there, North Georgia extended their lead out to as many as 18 points, not letting GSU get closer than nine at any point in the final period of play.
NOTES
– Jamari McDavid led all scorers with 16 points in her first action as a Nighthawk. Abbie Franklin and Caroline Martin each put up 13 points, while Julianne Sutton scored 12 in 20 minutes of action.
– No Panther had more than eight points as 11 Georgia State players recorded at least a point.
– The Nighthawks shot 7-for-19 from distance, while GSU was just 2-for-19 from behind the arc.

UNG rifle team earns win over Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The No. 18 University of North Georgia rifle team dominated Saturday, defeating a short-handed Wofford team, 4555-3210, Saturday in Southern Conference action.
Kevin Vaughn was the top performer in the meet, finishing with an aggregate score of 1145. Vaughn scored 570 in smallbore before a 575 in air rifle. His prone shooting in the smallbore discipline was scored at 99-99 in the two strings.
Alyssa Kiser finished one point back of Vaughn in the aggregate scoring, finishing as the top air rifle shooter for UNG. Her 586 in the discipline was punctuated by the final string scoring at a perfect 100.e
Dawson Kissik and Jaden-Ann Fraser finished third and fourth, respectively, in the aggregate rankings.
North Georgia will compete next weekend at home against Jacksonville State.
Flagler beats UNG in overtime, 1-0

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia men’s soccer team fell in overtime to a golden goal from Flagler Saturday, 1-0, at the UNG Soccer Complex at Lynn Cottrell Park.
Both teams had opportunities in regulation, but Garrett Liles and Flagler’s goalie, Andrea Lubbia, each made excellent saves that sent the match eventually to overtime. In the final minute of the first overtime period, FC’s Max Lambertz scored off a Joeran Osland corner kick to win the game for the Saints.
NOTES
– North Georgia falls to 0-2-1 in overtime games this season. UNG is 3-5-1 in matches decided by a goal or less, having lost three straight in one goal fashion.
– Liles made nine saves on the day.

Clayton State women defeat UNG soccer

MORROW, Ga. – A late goal in the first half is all Clayton State needed as they held on to defeat the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team, 1-0, Saturday evening.
The Lakers scored in the 40th minute as Marie Devillers found Kamila Mroziewicz for the game’s lone goal. North Georgia had 11 shots in the second half while holding CSU to just two, but couldn’t find the back of the net to equalize.
NOTES
– Peyton Satterfield had three saves in her 2021 debut between the posts.
– Taylor Malasek took five shots on the day, three of which were on target.
– North Georgia now needs a win and a Clayton State loss Saturday at Young Harris to host the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt tournament.

Hurricanes outlast UNG in double overtime thriller

AMERICUS, Ga. – Despite a last second goal from Michael Walsh to force extra time, the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team fell in double overtime to Georgia Southwestern, 3-2, Saturday night.
North Georgia got on the board first in the seventh minute when Donovan Odier scored his ninth goal of the season on a pass from Gabriel Campora to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hurricanes answered in the 35th minute on the first of two Jack Malleret goals. Malleret scored his second just before halftime to give GSW a 2-1 lead into the break.
Neither team could break through as it looked like GSW would hold on for the win in regulation, but Walsh fired a shot toward goal from nearly 50 yards out with five seconds left that found the back of the net as time expired to force the overtime periods. Chris Salamatou scored the golden goal in the 105th minute on a rebound to give the home team the win.
NOTES
– The Nighthawks scored on both of their shots on target. UNG took seven shots in total.
– North Georgia is winless in its last eight matches that have gone to double overtime, going 0-3-5 in that stretch. The last match that UNG won after 100 minutes elapsed was at UNC Pembroke on October 22, 2016.

UNG women’s golf team in third place in opening round at Achasta

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia women’s golf team sits in third place following the opening 36 holes of the 8th Annual LeeAnn Noble Memorial at Achasta Golf Club.
UNG’s Danielle Humphrey led the way on the opening day, shooting a 1-under 143 after rounds of 70 and 73. Ellie Rippee shot the low first round for the Nighthawks, firing a 69, while Maddie Ananthasane was the low Nighthawk in round two with a 70. Humphrey sits in a tie for sixth place individually with Rippee and Kennedy Noe in a tie for 12th.
No. 6 Limestone holds a 12 shot lead over No. 9 Findlay at 13-under par. UNG is four shots back of the Oilers at 3-over, followed by No. 1 Dallas Baptist at 6-over and Lenoir-Rhyne and No. 4 Anderson tied for fifth at 9-over.
Individually, Limestone’s Ebba Hellman holds the lead, shooting 8-under for the tournament. The Saints set a new 18-hole scoring record in the tournament with a 280 in the second round.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Stephen Kinsel tied the single-round scoring record in the opening 18 holes and the University of North Georgia men’s golf team set a new 18-hole scoring record in the second round as the Nighthawks fought to sixth place after 36 holes Monday.
Kinsel’s 6-under 65 was the seventh round of 6-under par in program history and the first to be shot on a par 71 course. Bogey free through the opening 18 holes, Kinsel followed it up with a 1-under 70 to sit in a tie for fourth individually.
The Nighthawks shot 4-over in the opening round before turning in an 8-under 276 in the second round, beating the single round team scoring record by two shots. At 4-under for the tournament, UNG is two back of Newberry for fifth place.
USC Aiken and Lincoln Memorial are tied for the team lead at 20-under with Carson-Newman three shots back. Queens, at 12-under, sits in fourth. Individually, USCA’s Leo Johannson is the leader at 10-under.
The final round tees off today with UNG playing with Newberry, Barton and Belmont Abbey.
Clayton State outlasts UNG, 3-1

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Clayton State jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on to defeat the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team, 3-1, Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex at Lynn Cottrell Park.
The Lakers had Isaac Pimenta and Geo Rios score in the 16th and 23rd minutes, respectively, to take the early 2-0 lead. After halftime, UNG came out with a lot of pressure, resulting in a Gustavo Alencar free kick goal in the 63rd minute.
With UNG pushing numbers forward, Clayton State took advantage with a counter attack that gave Alexis Iturria his fifth goal of the year to bring the match to its 3-1 final.
NOTES
– 36 fouls were called in the match.
– The Lakers put 11 shots in the air, nine of which were on target. Ben Kempffer made six saves on the night.

UNG Cross Country second among non Division 1 teams in Asics Invitational

FAIRBURN, Ga. – The University of North Georgia cross country team finished as the second non-Division I team in the Asics Cross Country Invitational Saturday, coming in at seventh place overall.
Emily McBride was the top Nighthawk in the field, finishing in 32nd place with a 5K time of 19:18.67. Karmen LeRoy finished nine seconds back of McBride in 42nd place with Devin Helms in 48th at 19:32.09. Claire Mills and Audrey Gleason rounded out the scoring five for UNG.
In the team standings, Samford ran away with the win, overtaking Florida State by 48 points. Georgia Tech was third, followed by Flagler, who finished one point behind the Yellow Jackets. Davidson was a distant fifth place.
North Georgia finished with 225 points, besting DI opponents Western Carolina, Mercer and Georgia Southern.
The Nighthawks will be back in action next weekend at the Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville.
Nighthawks defeat Georgia College 1-0 in women’s soccer

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — After nearly 103 minutes, the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team stretched the winning streak to six with a 1-0 win over Georgia College Saturday evening.
North Georgia played most of the first half out of the Bobcat half but had nothing to show for it as all four shots taken by UNG failed to find the back of the net. Both teams had numerous opportunities in the second half but with no score after 90 minutes, the game went to extra time.
The Nighthawks continued to press forward in the final portion of the match as Cat Watry’s cross was blocked. Nikki Gomez took the ball and fired a shot that was saved, but Abbie Crane picked the rebound and put it home through contact to give UNG the win.
NOTES
– This was the 10th time a match between UNG and GC was decided by a single goal. North Georgia is 2-0-3 in games that have advanced into the second overtime period.
– Morgan Ramby finished the night with four saves.
– Prior to the game, Ramby, Jazmin Adlam, Taylor Malasek and Bailey Swindell were honored as part of Senior Day.
